Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle means that science is, even in principle, unable to predict with certainty behaviour at a quantum level. Heisenberg concluded: "the atoms or elementary particles themselves are not real; they form a world of potentialities or possibilities rather than one of things". Should we accept that the quantum mechanics has made the universe unknowable? And if so, how should we proceed if the way the world is depends on our observations? He is a very creative visual multimedia artist and super talented musician. Mr. Melody finds him bringing both his vibrant worlds together. The fantastic cover art that adorns the front and back is done by Andrew himself and instantly upon first listen I was struck by his musical growth. I’ve seen mister Pitrone live a few times over the years and he used to have a slightly more folky and whimsical approach. However now the opening cut “Like Lovers” recalls a bluesy and rockin’ ride that wouldn’t sound that far out of place on a Stones record from the early 70’s. It’s got a really nice swagger and other spots in the record find him walking on similar waters. “Take Me With You” has a nice glammy atmosphere that recalls Bowie and Mott The Hoople. Like Lou Reed in London recording Transformer, Andrew is riding the slightly harder edges of glammy sounds circa 1972. This is the standout track and something I would have pushed as a lead single to send to radio deejays with its ELO boogie bridge, it really has it all. “Two Swans” reminds me of something from Headwig & The Angry Itch. I mean that as a complete compliment as a younger person getting into glam, Bolan, The Sweet, Slade, Mott, it was that movie along with Billy Elliott which helped cement that these sounds were extremely special to me and many other people the world over. It sounds like it could easily fit on the soundtrack. “Strawberry Moon” switches things up slightly with a country folk center, this reminds me of if Gram Parsons hung out with Tiny Tim and they wrote Donovan a song together. It’s next cut “America” is definitely more folky and back to that somewhat whimsical frolicking vibe Andrew excels in. The lead electric guitar playing on this track really sparkles. It’s also got a very dusty delta blues slide looming about its good time, upbeat vibe. It’s another highlight kicking things off on the beeside of the album. The Leslie guitar lead recalls George Harrison to my ear and I’m a sucker for that sound on the ol’ get fiddle. “Magnesium” is full on hoe down. Declaration of smoking Indian tobaccy made me chuckle. I’ve been known to partake myself and right now a little puff just made Andrew’s voice sound that much more 3D. The production is strong and those LA LA LAND backup musicians make this album hop n scotch like tiptoeing through them tulips. Tiny keeps coming to mind on this other side as it rocks and rolls it’s way up to Bakersfield and then straight back over to London in the next bar. Musical bar folks, but these country rock sounds would light up any dive bar now, then or when! Sneaky Pete from The Flying Burrito Brothers would be proud of the steel guitar throughout. If you need to investigate the lyrics, Andrew wrote them out and included them in his finely drawn insert. Horns adorn the track “Masterson” and it has a very poppy soulful sound. It’s a refreshing change of pace from the rural tractor ride we just took from the first few beeside ditties. I’d vote this for the second single I’d personally send to radio deejays had this baby come out back in the early 70’s. It’s fun and addicting. You’ll love it 😍 “Cactus Land Cold” is a spidery psych folk joint that smokes lightly and leaves you feeling dreamy and hazy eyed. The female backing vocals sound lovely hanging out with mister Pitrone’s sweet voice. “Mr. Crow” has a good timey sheen and Andrew sings “Bye Bye” as we fade out on a very strong outing from this gypsy gentleman who takes all his cool life experience and spins it into a remarkable tapestry of sounds. Last summer, when The New York Times Book Review released its list of the 100 Best Books of the 21st Century, one of the authors with multiple titles on that list was Hilary Mantel, who died in 2022. Those novels were “Wolf Hall” and “Bring Up the Bodies,” the first two in a trilogy of novels about Thomas Cromwell, the all-purpose fixer and adviser to King Henry VIII. Those books were also adapted into a 2015 television series starring Mark Rylance as Cromwell and Damien Lewis as King Henry. It’s now a decade later and the third book in Mantel’s series, “The Mirror and the Light,” has also been adapted for the small screen. Its finale airs on Sunday, April 27. Shengjian Bao Serves: 4 Prep time: 30 mins + proofing Cook time: 8 mins Ingredients 1 tsp dried yeast 1 tsp caster sugar 150ml warm water 1⅔ cup (250g) plain flour ⅓ cup (50g) cornflour ½ tsp fine sea salt 3 tsp vegetable oil 250g pork mince 4cm piece fresh ginger, finely grated 3 spring onions, finely sliced 2 garlic cloves, finely minced 1 tsp dark soy sauce 2 tsp light soy sauce 1 tsp Shaoxing wine 1 tsp sesame oil ¼ tsp ground sichuan pepper ¼ tsp each sea salt and white pepper ⅓ cup (80ml) chicken stock ¼ cup (60ml) neutral oil ½ cup (125ml) hot water chopped green onions, toasted sesame seeds, for garnish soy sauce, black vinegar and chilli crisp dipping sauce, to serve Method For the dough, in a large bowl, mix warm water, yeast and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes, until frothy. Mix in flours, salt and oil and stir with a pair of chopsticks, then knead by hand until a smooth, elastic dough forms. Place in an oiled bowl and cover with a damp tea towel. Leave to rise in a warm place for 1 hour, until doubled in size. Meanwhile, for the filling, combine the mince, ginger, onions, garlic, soy sauces, wine, sesame oil, peppers and salt in a large bowl. Stir constantly, while gradually adding stock 1 tbsp at a time into the mixture. Set aside. Punch the dough down and knead on a floured work surface until it goes back to its original size. Divide it into 20 equal portions and roll each piece into a round wrapper. Cover dough pieces to prevent drying out while filling* Hold the wrapper in the palm of one hand. Place some filling in the middle. Fold the edges in a circular pattern by pinching with thumb and index finger until the bun is completely sealed. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium high heat. Place in the buns (28cm pan for all 20 buns or cook in 2 batches for a smaller pan). ** Cook for 2-3 mins, until the bases are golden, pour in the water then cover with a lid. Uncover once the water evaporates completely, and cook for a further 30 seconds. Serve sprinkled with sesame seeds and spring onion. *It may be easier to work in 2 batches, leaving the remaining dough in the fridge, covered, so it doesn’t over-proof. **You can cook the buns seam side down or facing up, but if you face them down make sure they are well sealed to keep the liquid inside buns during cooking.
