Tussen de planten en winkelwagentjes luisteren muziekliefhebbers naar een concert georganiseerd door het Grachtenfestival. "Je zag de prijskaartjes dansen op de muziek." Op een zonnige dag staan twee mannen buiten bij een tuincentrum. Eén van hen houdt een winkelwagentje vast en beiden staan met hun rug naar de camera. Ze worden omringd door weelderige groene planten en potbomen. Beiden dragen een korte broek en een zonne Eigenlijk zou het concert binnen in de kas plaatsvinden, maar vanwege de hoge temperaturen werd dat last minute naar buiten verplaatst. "En hier is gelukkig aan schaduw geen gebrek", lacht directeur van het Grachtenfestival Tonko Grever. "Er staan hier genoeg parasols en planten, dus die hebben we gewoon even verplaatst naar buiten." Het Grachtenfestival is het grootste klassiekemuziekfestival van Nederland. Van 7 t/m 16 augustus zijn er meer dan honderdvijftig optredens verdeeld over de hele stad. Van de ambtswoning tot de Sloterplas en van winkelcentrum Boven 't Y tot de Zuidas. De keuze voor Tuincentrum Osdorp is volgens Grever dan ook logisch. "Het thema van het Grachtenfestival dit jaar is groen. Ikzelf - en bijna heel Amsterdam - versiert zijn hele balkon met groen van een tuincentrum. Dus als ik aan groen denk, denk ik aan het tuincentrum." Het publiek is gecharmeerd van de muziek en de locatie. "Ik kom hier al veertig jaar, dus om dit een keer mee te maken is heel aangenaam", vertelt een bezoeker. Een ander: "Over een paar jaar vertrekt het tuincentrum. Dus dit maken we toch mooi nog maar mee. Ik zou het best legendarisch willen noemen." Muzikanten Isaac Lottman en Lisa Jacobs spelen - misschien niet heel opvallend - voor het eerst in een tuincentrum. "Het smaakt wel naar meer. Het was grappig genoeg meer sfeer dan ik had verwacht. Gebru is the founder and executive director of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, a group of academics, activists and engineers who produce research rooted in the belief that technology should benefit everyone. She also co-founded Black in AI, a nonprofit that works to increase the inclusion and visibility of Black people in the field of AI. Gebru previously served as co-lead of the ethical AI research team at Google but was fired in 2020 for writing a paper that warned about the financial and environmental costs of large language models, as well as their propensity to promote racism. The internet, which is what AI uses to train itself, "represents hegemonic views," says Gebru. "We even know articles like Wikipedia are heavily biased. It's overwhelmingly Western and male." "What it is is a series of different types of AI algorithms that are chained together, each with their own pitfalls, each with their own flaws," she says. "And these systems build off of each other and feed into one another to, unfortunately, end up resulting in civilian casualties." This can lead to faulty targeting because "humans are prone to just accepting recommendations of AI algorithms without corroborating that evidence," adds Khlaaf. Op de brug vanaf de Nieuwe Spiegelstraat naar de Spiegelgracht loopt nog een voetpad, maar even verderop verandert de situatie en moeten voetgangers oversteken. Dat zorgt regelmatig voor verwarring. Ook Amsterdammers die we spreken, begrijpen waarom toeristen hier de fout in gaan: ''Het is heel onduidelijk door die borden. Toeristen denken door het wandelende mannetje dat je hier mag lopen.'' Een andere voorbijganger zegt: ''Ik, als Amsterdammer, begrijp de verkeerssituatie al niet, laat staan als toerist.'' De gemeente heeft de afgelopen jaren juist extra markeringen en borden geplaatst om voetgangers van het fietspad te weren. Tegelijkertijd erkent de gemeente dat de situatie verwarrend kan zijn. Een volledige herinrichting zit er voorlopig niet in vanwege de hoge kosten. Het rijden op het kruispunt brengt grote risico's met zich mee, vertelt een winkeleigenaar: ''Ik zie dagelijks scheldpartijen. Ik heb meegemaakt dat mensen hun spullen in het water zijn gevallen. Het is echt schandalig hoe sommige Amsterdammers zich gedragen.'' Een andere jongen zegt tegen AT5 dat hij dit gewend is vanaf kinds af aan. Kan Donald Trump in 2028 opnieuw president worden? Donald Trump blijft hinten op nóg een termijn als president van de Verenigde Staten. Met uitspraken over 2028 en zelfs een Trump 2028-pet houdt hij de discussie zelf nadrukkelijk in leven. Maar kan dat volgens de Amerikaanse grondwet überhaupt? Amerikakenner Raymond Mens legt uit waarom het 22e amendement een grote juridische blokkade vormt voor een nieuwe termijn van Trump. Tegelijkertijd wordt er in de kring rond Trump wel degelijk gesproken over 2028. Voormalig Witte Huis-strateeg Steve Bannon zegt zelfs dat Trump opnieuw president zal worden en dat daarvoor een plan bestaat. Wie die beperking wil veranderen, staat voor een buitengewoon zware politieke opgave. Daarvoor is tweederde steun nodig in zowel het Huis van Afgevaardigden als de Senaat. Vervolgens moet ook driekwart van de Amerikaanse staten akkoord gaan. Toch verdwijnt Trump 2028 niet uit het politieke gesprek. Mensen rond Trump blijven de mogelijkheid noemen, en Trump zelf lijkt er zichtbaar plezier in te hebben om de suggestie telkens opnieuw op te werpen. Volgens Raymond Mens hoeft dat bovendien niet alleen om een nieuwe presidentscampagne te draaien. Ook wanneer Trump na zijn termijn het Witte Huis verlaat, kan hij een grote politieke machtsfactor blijven. De Republikeinse Partij is sterk met Trump verweven, waardoor hij vanuit Mar-a-Lago invloed zou kunnen blijven uitoefenen op de koers van de partij. Een formele nieuwe termijn en politieke macht zijn daarmee twee verschillende vragen. Juridisch ligt de weg naar een nieuw presidentschap vrijwel dicht. It is one of the largest construction projects on Earth—built to house computing equipment that may become outdated in roughly the time it takes to finish the campus. That raises a strange architectural question: why are we constructing permanent buildings around such temporary machines? Factories, warehouses, cold-storage buildings, and even old post offices were once among the most technologically advanced structures of their era. Many have since become apartments, offices, galleries, stores, and entire urban neighborhoods. Meta’s own New York offices occupy part of the former James A. Farley Post Office, a building constructed more than a century ago for sorting mail. Modern AI data centers appear to share many of the qualities that made those industrial buildings adaptable: repetitive structural bays, tall ceilings, heavy floor capacity, durable envelopes, and large open interiors. Yet today’s hyperscale data centers are usually treated less like lasting infrastructure and more like disposable appliances—single-purpose campuses built around one generation of computing equipment. In this video, we look inside the architecture of an AI data center, from GPU racks and liquid cooling systems to substations, generators, switchyards, and enormous single-story shells.
