Let’s observe a traditional piston and cylinder. The displacement of this simple anatomy is defined by the bore and the stroke. Your bore is the diameter of the piston and your height is the stroke, the distance between piston top dead center and bottom dead center. Let’s say that our bore is 50mm and our stroke is 50mm. In that case the displacement of our imaginary single-cylinder engine is defined by this formula and results in 98.17 cubic centimeters Now let’s observe an engine with an Oval piston. Obviously we no longer have a simple cylinder defined by the diameter of the piston because the piston no longer has a diameter. Now Ferrari’s oval piston patent is definitely not the first attempt at oval pistons. Back in the late 70s Honda made Grand prix racing bikes with Oval piston engines in an attempt to compete against two stroke engines, which were not given an unfair displacement disadvantage back then. Honda’s oval piston love affair culminated in the NR aka NR750 production bike in 1992. Ok, if we go to the wikipedia page of the NR750 and go to bore and stroke we will learn that there are three numbers. Two for bore and one for stroke. This is because an oval piston has a major axis and a minor axis, effectively it has two diameters. Now let’s assume that we have a pill-shaped piston and cylinder with a 30mm minor axis and a 70mm major axis and a stroke of 50mm. If we solve the displacement of the cuboid in the middle and the half-cylinders we will get a total displacement of 95.34cc, so almost the same displacement and thus the same potential performance as our round cylinder, but at only 60% of the total length. If we stack up our cylinders into a multi cylinder configuration we can see that the oval pistons result in a dramatically shorter engine. But Ferrari didn’t stop here, they took this a step further by also creating a novel connecting rod arrangement. Now a traditional V8 or V12 engine is going to have a shared crankpin arrangement so two conrod big ends on a single crankpin which means that we have one connecting rod in front of the other. Because each connecting rod corresponds to a cylinder center the result is that one cylinder bank will be slightly offset from the other which results in an overall slightly longer engine and also a slight imbalance the forces from the cylinders are slightly offset one from the other they create a little rocking couple on the engine. Ferrari got rid of this fusing both connecting rods into one assembly. One rod is as usual while the other rod is an attachment with it’s own point of rotation. They look kinda like conjoined twins. The benefit is that both rods now share a single big end and bearing which results in a shorter and stronger crankshaft and overall shorter engine with no rocking couple. So once we add the siamese rods to the pill-shaped pistons we get a v12 or v8 that is noticeably shorter than a traditional inline six or inline four, which is quite an achievement. This engine anatomy would definitely be a major advantage for front-engined ferrari models where a shorter engine leads to noticeably better weight distribution and handling of the vehicle. The added bonus is that creates extre space for potential hybrid components. Another benefit of an oval piston, which is something Honda made great use of, is the possibility to put a greater number of valves above it leading to potentially better breathing and better performance. Murtabak Buldak Omelette: Serves: 1 Prep time: 5 mins Cook time: 10 mins Ingredients 120g packet of instant ramen noodles with seasonings 1 tbsp olive oil 1 hot dog/frankfurt 2 eggs, beaten 1 spring onion, sliced (whites and greens separated) ⅓ cup (40g) grated cheese crispy chilli oil Method Score the hot dog/frankfurt on an angle across top and base, then cut a deep slit down the centre, without cutting completely through. Heat half the oil in a medium frying pan on medium heat. Cook the sausage, cut side down with protein press on top, for 2-3 minutes until browned. Set the hot dog aside. Cook the noodles in a small saucepan of boiling water with included seasonings. Heat remaining oil in the same frying pan on medium. Drain noodles straight into the pan and spread out to cover the base. Pour over the egg and shake the pan so it doesn’t stick. Sprinkle over the white of the onion, then cheese. Top with sausage down the centre. Fold half the noodles over to enclose, then transfer to a serving plate. En als het niet binnen hun eigen levensspanne is, dan toch zeker in de jaren erna. Menig miljonair heeft daarom zijn persoonlijke vrieskist al klaar staan om na de dood weer tot leven te worden gewekt. Of het nu in stoffelijke vorm is of in de vorm van een softwareprogramma valt nog te bezien. Sommigen kunnen niet zo lang wachten en gebruiken zichzelf als proefkonijn. Allen hopen zo aan hun lot als sterveling te ontkomen. De wetenschap op het gebied van levensverlenging is booming business. A few weeks ago, I asked you for your mum's recipes. I got loads of submissions and here are three dishes that stood out to me, so let’s try them and see how they taste. RECIPES Gumbo from @feywanderer Ingredients - 100g lard - ½ cup (75g) plain flour - 2 yellow capsicum (bell peppers) diced - 3 sticks celery, diced - 1 white onion, diced - 6 cloves garlic, minced - 1 bunch of thyme - 300g Andouille sausage, sliced - 6 chicken thighs, sliced - 1 tbsp garlic powder - 1 tbsp smoked paprika - 1½ tsp cayenne pepper - 1 tbsp dried oregano - 1 tbsp onion powder - 2 bay leaves - 1½ tsp ground white pepper - 6 cups (1.5L) beef or chicken stock - sea salt, to taste - hot sauce, to taste - 2 spring onions, thinly sliced - steamed rice to serve Method 1. Melt lard in a large saucepan over medium high heat. Add the flour and whisk until it turns a dark brown colour, about 15-20 minutes. 2. Add the capsicum, celery and onion and season with salt and pepper. 3. Sauté, mixing through the roux for 4-5 minutes, then add the garlic and cook for a further 2 minutes. 4. Add the chicken, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne, oregano, onion powder, bay leaves, thyme and white pepper. 5. Mix well, then add the stock, stirring until there are no lumps. 6. Add the sausage, bring to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes. 7. Season to taste with salt and hot sauce, then serve in bowls topped with rice and spring onions. Chicken in a Clay Pot from @Roxiewinn Ingredients - 1.6kg free range chicken - 1 white onion, cut into wedges - ½ cup (125ml) white wine - ½ cup (125ml) water - 2 sprigs rosemary - 1 bunch baby carrots, trimmed and scrubbed - 8 red potatoes, quartered - 1 clove garlic, peeled - 115g butter, softened - garlic salt and pepper for seasoning - French bread stick to serve Method 1. Soak a 2.5-3L clay pot in lukewarm water for 20 minutes, then drain and dry. 2. Preheat oven 170°C (190°C conventional). 3. Rub the chicken with the butter all over and under the skin. 4. Place chicken into the clay pot. 5. Add the sprigs of rosemary on the sides of the chicken. 6. Add the onions, carrots, potatoes and garlic to the pot placed around the chicken. 7. Add the wine and water. 8. Season with garlic salt and pepper. 9. Place the lid on and cook in the oven for 1- 1½ hours, until golden brown and juices run clear. 10. Serve chicken carved with vegetables, cooking juices and French bread for dipping. Aloo Paratha from @Anuradha.clarke Ingredients Filling - 2 large potatoes, boiled and mashed - ½ red onion, finely diced - ½ small green chilli, finely diced - ¼ cup chopped coriander (cilantro) - ½ tsp sea salt - ½ tsp chilli powder - ½ tsp dry mango powder (Amchur) - ½ tsp ground cumin Dough - 2½ cups atta flour (wholewheat flour) - ½ tsp fine salt - ¼ tsp ajwain seeds - 2 tbsp vegetable oil - 180 - 200ml water - ghee for frying Method 1. Combine all ingredients for filling in a large bowl and mix well. 2. For the dough, mix the flour, salt and seeds in a large bowl. Make a well in the centre and mix in the vegetable oil and enough of the water to make into a soft dough. 3. Knead gently, then set aside, covered with a tea towel, for 15 minutes. 4. Divide the dough in 4 equal portions. 5. Roll each portion out on a lightly oiled work bench to approx a 25cm round. 6. Place a quarter of the filling in the centre and spread out gently, leaving a 5cm border. 7. Fold over the edges into the centre to enclose and gently seal. 8. Press out gently to flatten. 9. Repeat with remaining dough and filling. 10. Heat some ghee in a grill pan or large frying pan on medium. 11. Cook each paratha for 1-2 minutes, then spread with some more ghee before flipping. 12. Cook for a further 2 minutes until browned and crisp. 13. Serve paratha cut into wedges with some plain yoghurt.
