Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt Drop Site News released a major investigation this week into the U.S. bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh children’s school in the Iranian city of Minab on February 28, the first day of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. Drop Site spoke to survivors, first responders, parents and witnesses in one of the most in-depth reports on the massacre to date. The bombing killed at least 156 people — 120 of the victims were children, 26 were teachers, and the rest were parents. A United Nations fact-finding mission recently concluded that the U.S. strike was a war crime, but the Trump administration has not yet even acknowledged U.S. responsibility. “This was not a single bombing or collateral damage,” says Drop Site News’s Jeremy Scahill, lead author of the investigation. “There were at least two direct hits on a school packed with children … and a couple of hours after those initial hits, as first responders came, as parents came, the U.S. launches more strikes.” Scahill points out that until 2013, the area where the school is was a facility operated by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. But in satellite photos from just weeks before the strike, “You could see the murals on the wall. You could see the soccer field. Some of the satellite photos show shadows of tiny people playing outside.” Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on over 1,500 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday.
Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt Tennessee’s Governor Bill Lee has halted executions for the remainder of the year after a death row prisoner survived two lethal injections on Wednesday. According to her lawyers, Christa Pike was still breathing after she was strapped to a gurney and injected with two syringes of pentobarbital in a botched execution that spanned more than two hours. Prior to the scheduled execution, Pike and her lawyers argued a single-dose lethal injection could be tantamount to torture due to Pike’s small veins. Pike was sentenced to death for a 1995 murder she committed when she was 18. Now in the hospital in critical condition, she is the first person to ever survive lethal injection in the United States. “I have seen five executions in Tennessee,” says Steven Hale, a criminal justice reporter for the Nashville Banner, who witnessed Christa Pike’s botched execution. “And I’ve never seen anything like what we saw Wednesday night.” Christa Pike “has just experienced the most agonizing attempt at lethal injection in the country’s history,” says Sandra Babcock, director of the Cornell Center on the Death Penalty Worldwide. Babcock says Pike should have never been sentenced to death, because she was an “immature 18-year-old” with a history of severe childhood and sexual trauma who “was not receiving medication for post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar disorder at the time of [the murder], which she committed with her abusive boyfriend at the time.” Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on over 1,500 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. Oerlemans werkte voornamelijk in conflictgebieden. The planned package also includes measures such as extending fixed-term rental contracts that expire before December 31, 2028, by two years, as well as tighter regulation of short-term and room rentals. How does this affect the young people? Young people in Spain are particularly affected by this, because moving out becomes extremely difficult. Right now, 87% of 16–29-year-olds remain financially dependent on their parents or can’t afford to move out at all. One recent report found that a young salaried worker would need to spend 92.3% of their income on rent to live alone. And buying isn’t much easier: the average home costs the equivalent of 14 years of a young person’s salary, while the down payment alone would take around four years of income. #ENTR_og #politics #ENTR_explainer Sources: EFE - Diez de las principales medidas de los decretos ley de vivienda que ha aprobado el Gobierno (2026), CJE - La emancipación juvenil cae a mínimos históricos en un segundo semestre: solo el 15,2% de la juventud española vive fuera del hogar familiar (2025), EFE - La acampada de Sol cumple su cuarta noche decidida a continuar presionando (2026), DW - Spain agrees on measures to fix housing crisis, ban eviction (2026), Reuters - Vulnerable woman evicted and left to sleep in a car shows depth of Spain's housing crisis (2026), Banco de España – Annual Report 2025, El País - Se construyen más casas, pero se terminan menos: ¿cómo se puede acabar con la crisis de vivienda? There are few living writers as closely associated with a genre as Stephen King is with horror. Over a career spanning more than 50 years (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/05/books/review/podcast-stephen-king-50-years.html) , 70 novels and hundreds of short stories, King has terrified generations of readers with books like “Carrie,” “The Shining” and “It” while also writing across multiple genres like fantasy, science fiction and crime — producing books that resist easy categorization. One of those is “The Talisman,” the 1984 fantasy novel King co-wrote with the author Peter Straub (“Ghost Story”). It follows a 12-year-old named Jack Sawyer who discovers that he can move between our world and a parallel one called the Territories. Seventeen years later, King and Straub returned to Jack in the sequel “Black House.” They always intended to write one more book together. Straub died in 2022 (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/06/books/peter-straub-dead.html) , before they could. But King is now publishing that third novel in the series, “Other Worlds Than These,” with Straub still credited as his co-author. The book comes out Oct. 6. To write it King has returned not only to the world they created together but also to Straub’s writing itself, rereading his old friend’s work and trying to channel his voice on the page. In it, Jack Sawyer is much older. And the new book, like “Black House” before it, incorporates King’s epic, sprawling Dark Tower series. Part of the story is also inspired by the crimes of the 1950s mass murderer, Charles Starkweather. This week, King joins the “Book Review” podcast to talk about finishing the series without Straub, their decades-long friendship and collaboration, his resistance to being defined solely as a horror writer and why, after more than half a century of published books, he still feels compelled to chase the next story. Books Mentioned on This Episode: • “The Talisman,” by Stephen King and Peter Straub • “Black House,” by Stephen King and Peter Straub • “Other Worlds Than These,” by Stephen King and Peter Straub • “Ghost Story,” by Peter Straub • “The Hero’s Journey,” by Joseph Campbell • “Redheaded Peckerwood,” by Christian Patterson • “The Gunslinger,” by Stephen King • “The Eyes of the Dragon,” by Stephen King • “The Stand,” by Stephen King • “The Dead Zone,” by Stephen King • “Firestarter,” by Stephen King • “Mr. Mercedes,” by Stephen King • “Survivor Type,” from “Skeleton Crew,” by Stephen King • “Deliverance,” by James Dickey • “To the White Sea,” by James Dickey • “Robinson Crusoe,” by Daniel Defoe • “Dune,” by Frank Herbert • “Floating Dragon,” by Peter Straub Listen to and Follow ‘The Book Review’ Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-book-review/id120315179?mt=2) | Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/1q3tsOS9XhqgSslnyZyKV6) | Amazon Music (https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/d9314635-147c-409a-ae6a-fdf8358caee5/the-book-review) | YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdMrbgYfVl-vT4J7V1XT3MD5GCSebQJay) | iHeartRadio (https://www.iheart.com/podcast/326-the-book-review-28076603/) Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture. You don’t need to settle for sad sandwiches and wilted salads for lunch. This episode, Wirecutter kitchen editor Gabriella Gershenson explains how the right lunch box can help you pack a midday meal that you or your kids will actually be happy to tuck into. We discuss how to choose between bentos, insulated totes, salad containers, and thermoses for both kids and adults. Some boxes are better for upcycling leftover odds and ends, while others do a better job keeping your food at a safe temperature throughout the day. Plus, Gabriella shares her favorite ideas and resources for adding more joy to the lunch box—from DIY tinned fish hand rolls to sweet hand-written notes. This episode covers: • Why the vessel dictates the lunch: Compartmentalized bento boxes can help you turn bits of leftovers into an appealing meal, salad bowls will keep the greens crisp, while insulated thermoses open up a world of hot lunches–no microwave needed! • Keeping foods at safe temps: If you don’t have access to a refrigerator during the day, you may want to get an insulated tote and use freezer packs. • Fun packing ideas: Inspiration from Molly Yeh (https://mynameisyeh.com/) 's bento hacks (https://www.instagram.com/p/C6ZYOq4P1uO/) (like date "snickers" with nut butter and sprinkles) and Ali Slagle's DIY tinned fish hand rolls (https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1026700-tinned-fish-hand-rolls?eafs_enabled=false) .
