Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe. The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. The release of the JFK assassination files is now tantalizingly close, and every little bit of new information is being immediately inhaled by historians and conspiracy theorists alike. In the last couple of days, Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, who was appointed by President Trump to manage the release, has stated that “the initial hearing… was actually faulty” and “I believe that there were two shooters”. This information alone is a bombshell, but coming from a US government official makes it all the more juicy. So what else about the official government account of the assassination could be false? And could this sordid event finally be shown to be a genuine, honest to goodness conspiracy? To answer these questions, Piers Morgan speaks to ex-mobster Louis Ferrante, ex-CIA agent Andrew Bustamante and YouTuber and filmmaker Johnny Harris. After that, Piers turns to Judyth Vary Baker, a woman who claims she was Lee Harvey Oswald’s ex lover and claims he told her he was "set up". Daniel Markovits explains how the myth of meritocracy has caused unrest and turmoil in our politics, economics, and society at large. Does 'meritocracy' only create problems in contemporary Western society? With a free trial, you can explore more talks on the problems at the heart of our economic systems at https://iai.tv/video/neoliberalism-a-soviet-nightmare?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description The modern world is based on meritocracy - the idea that the harder you work, the more you refine your talents, and the force of your will should determine your place in life. But what if meritocracy, far from being just to both individuals and wider society, corrupts us and undermines the very culture it seeks to serve? Daniel Markovits shows how meritocracy has been undermined from within, not by corrupt people but by a system that is blind to the reasons for success and the power of inheritance of all kinds. If we are to find a better path, we must abandon the myth of meritocracy and understand what in life is truly valuable. #economics #politics #inequality Daniel Markovits is an American legal scholar, best known for his work on law and behavioural economics, contract law, distributive justice, and market regulation. His best-selling book, "The Meritocracy Trap: How America's Foundational Myth Feeds Inequality, Dismantles the Middle Class, and Devours the Elite", has sparked a significant discussion about the problems inherent in meritocratic societies. The Institute of Art and Ideas features videos and articles from cutting edge thinkers discussing the ideas that are shaping the world, from metaphysics to string theory, technology to democracy, aesthetics to genetics. Why are leaves green and not black? If they absorb light for energy, wouldn’t all the light be better? Scientists have thought that was weird for a while, so these researchers built a model to try to answer it. They knew pigments in leaves absorb light and convert it into electrons that other parts of the plant can use to make food. But it isn’t as simple as, more wavelengths of light, more food… What they found is a surprising result that helps give you a better glimpse into what might be going on all around you… For more optimistic science and tech stories, subscribe for more of our show Huge If True! #nature #science #tech #stem #animation

Watch movements are what underpin every watch you wear, but people often misunderstand the industry behind them. Broadly speaking most watch movements are off the shelf movements from a few companies that are then modified by the company to their specs. Some companies make their own movements, but it's a massive undertaking for the company and it's not 100% clear it's better for the consumer in the end. #watches #watchmaking #watchmakingtools #watchrepair

Okonomiyaki (Japanese Savoury Pancake) Ingredients 125g (4.4oz) plain flour ½ tbsp baking powder ½ tbsp baking soda 40g (1.4oz) cornflour (cornstarch) 175ml (¾ cup) dashi stock 1 egg 100g (3.5oz) pork belly, skin removed and sliced thinly ⅛ green cabbage, finely shredded 2 tbsp pickled ginger, diced 100ml (⅓ cup) okonomiyaki sauce 100ml (⅓ cup) Japanese mayonnaise (Kewpie) handful of bonito flakes 2 spring onions, finely sliced ground nori (seaweed flakes) salt, to taste oil, for frying Method In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and cornflour. Make a well in the centre and add the egg and dashi stock. Whisk until you have a smooth batter. In a separate bowl, season the shredded cabbage with a pinch of salt and set aside for a few minutes to draw out excess moisture. Add the white parts of the sliced spring onions to the batter, setting the green tops aside for garnish. Squeeze out any excess moisture from the cabbage, then stir it into the batter along with the pickled ginger. Heat a cast-iron or non-stick pan over medium-high heat and add a couple of tablespoons of oil. Add the sliced pork belly and fry for 2–3 minutes on each side until golden. Pour the batter over the pork belly, spreading it evenly across the pan. Cook for 4–5 minutes until bubbles appear on the surface. Carefully flip the pancake and cook for another 4–5 minutes until fully cooked through and golden brown. Transfer to a plate and drizzle with okonomiyaki sauce and Japanese mayo. Garnish with bonito flakes, nori flakes, spring onion greens, and extra pickled ginger. #cooking #shorts #recipe

Germany votes for a new government on the 23rd of February. Currently, the Christian Democratic Union and its Bavarian “sister party” are ahead in the polls with 32%, followed by the far-right Alternative for Germany with 21%. The Greens and the Social Democrats both score 14% currently. The politicians in the video are the chancellor candidates of the four parties with the highest shares in polls: Friedrich Merz as the chancellor candidate of the Christian Democratic Union, Robert Habeck from the Greens, Alice Weidel from the Alternative for Germany party and Olaf Scholz, current chancellor and chancellor candidate of the Social Democratic Party. In this fiery and uncompromising speech, Yanis Varoufakis calls out Europe’s leaders for their complicity in endless war, economic injustice, and the betrayal of the dream of a peaceful and just Europe. Speaking at Anti-Siko's rally in Munich, Varoufakis denounces the militarisation of Europe, the genocide in Palestine, and the exploitation of Ukraine for profit by the Western military-industrial complex. Varoufakis reminds us that the dream of Europe as a peace and justice project has been replaced by austerity, deindustrialisation, and fascism’s resurgence. But there is hope – if we stand together and say: NEVER AGAIN, ANYWHERE. This is our call to action. This is our moment to seize the day and dream of a new Europe. Introduced in 1937, the Purma Special was one of the first affordable, plastic-bodied point-and-shoot cameras manufactured and sold in the UK.
