Dat heeft minister Heinen van Financiën gezegd op de tweede dag van de Algemene Financiële Beschouwingen. Hij waarschuwde wel dat het "enorm ingewikkeld" is om een alternatief te vinden dat net zo veel oplevert. Om geld vrij te spelen, stelde het kabinet voor om kleine beleggers en spaarders vanaf 2028 eerder en meer belasting te laten betalen.  Dat plan viel zeer slecht bij zowel de linkse als de rechtse oppositie. In Germany, the crackdown on pro-Palestine speech is shaped by the German policy of "Staatsräson," or “reason of state," a concept referring to Germany's political commitment to the existence of the Israeli state. Since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in 2023, Staatsräson has manifested itself as German military aid to Israel and heavy policing of Palestine activism inside Germany. “Germany’s guilt regarding the Holocaust” has been “abused to justify the support of the genocidal war of Israel against the population in Gaza,” says Berlin-based lawyer Alexander Gorski, who recently represented the “Berlin Four,” three European Union citizens and one United States citizen whom Germany attempted to deport for participating in pro-Palestine campus protest.

At the time his official designation was the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. It's not exactly clear what year these images were captured, but we believe it is almost certainly 1963 as he is known to have visited Cambodia and North Vietnam in January of that year. Apparently in North Vietnam he met with Hồ Chí Minh. (Note: we do not know who shot the film, but whoever they were was probably in the entourage of the President, and might have been a Western journalist as the film originated from an American collection.) The film starts with events prior to the China visit, when Novotny visited Cambodia, where he apparently met with then Prince Norodom Sihanouk. The film starts with images shot in a car; at :22 a sign is visible welcoming Novotny, and a parade of Czech flags are visible beside the road. At :43 an open convertible car is shown with two military officers escorting Novotny's wife, and also a woman who might be Norodom Monineath aka "Queen Monique" of Cambodia. At 1:09, long ceremonial boats are seen on what might be the Mekong River. At 1:20, young female soldiers hold Czech flags and pose for the camera. At 1:43, a large group moves down to greet the assembled boats. At 1:57, President Novotny strides past the camera. At 2:01, the Royal Palace of Phnom Penh is shown, followed by images shot at the airport from inside a passenger aircraft. A large ceremonial tent is seen in the background. President Novotny and his party on a state visit to North Vietnam. At 2:24, Fouga CM.170 Magister jet trainers, developed by the French, escort the plane on its way to North Vietnam. At 2:40, reception in North Vietnam by a large crowd holding photos of Novotny, who grins at the camera at 2:56. At 3:09, members of the press escort a North Vietnamese delegation; it's not clear who these dignitaries are. In de VS mislukte gisteravond de executie van Christa Pike, die 30 jaar geleden werd veroordeeld voor de moord op haar liefdesrivale Colleen Slemmer. An immigration judge in Wisconsin has ruled that the president of the state's largest mosque can be deported. Salah Sarsour was arrested by immigration agents in March and held for more than 80 days in an Indiana jail. Sarsour came to the United States in 1993 and has been a legal resident of Milwaukee for over 32 years. He grew up in the occupied West Bank and was detained by ICE agents in March. The Department of Homeland Security claims Sarsour was arrested for lying on his green card application about a conviction in Israeli military courts when he was a teenager, but Sarsour’s lawyers say he is being targeted by the federal government over his advocacy for Palestinian rights.

Op 50-jarige leeftijd overleed schrijver en cabaretier Pauline Cornelisse gisteren aan de gevolgen van kanker. En daarmee verliest de stad een echte Amsterdammer. Cornelisse werd geboren aan de Herengracht en woonde inmiddels al jaren in de Watergraafsmeer. Op de plekken in de buurt waar ze vaak kwam, wordt Cornelisse vooral herinnerd als een warm, origineel en menselijk mens.  Bij de koffiezaak aan de Middenweg waar Cornelisse meerdere keren in de week heenging, zijn ze geschrokken van haar overlijden. "Je weet natuurlijk dat ze ziek is, maar het komt alsnog als een klap en het voelt zo plotseling als iemand er dan echt niet meer is. Dus we zijn er met z'n allen echt van geschrokken", vertelt filiaalmanager Lisa ten Raa. "Het huiselijke wat wij hier graag willen uitstralen, nam zij vaak mee de winkel in, ze kwam hier altijd met haar man, ze dronken allebei hetzelfde en ze hebben hier ontelbare kruiswoordpuzzels gemaakt", vertelt Ten Raa verder. "Ik vond haar vooral gewoon een heel liefdevol en warm persoon. Dat is iets wat je wel of niet hebt. En zij droeg dat van zichzelf van nature heel erg over." Frank Heyn, oud-eigenaar van een zalmzaak aan de Wittenburgergracht, maakte Cornelisse jarenlang mee als trouwe klant. "Ik denk dat ze een echt menselijk mens was. It dissects specific needs of war’s orphans and how these organizations worked to meet them. Initially the UNRRA was providing vital relief to the area. Following their disbandment; UNICEF was established in 1949 by the UN General Assembly. The film highlights a sense of cooperation among various nations in order to provide relief following a major global conflict. It shows complex process required to deliver aide, highlights the conventions which led to the disbandment of the UNRRA and subsequent establishment of UNICEF in 1946. It opens with the title screen (:08); produced under the supervision of the Department of the United Nations. The opening section relays a desire for peace and unity; servicemen lift 58 nations flags (:33). It begins to address challenges posed to the UN General Assembly in order to provide relief to affected areas (1:05). The UN Secretary General; Trygve Lie appears in 1947 (1:10). Close shots show a letter (1:14) addressing UNRRA’s closure. The orphans are introduced (1:26) climbing stones for a delivery of aide from UNRRA (1:35). Skinny suffers from a health condition (2:00). De trouwe AT5-kijker weet inmiddels wel dat door werkzaamheden grote delen van de Linnaeusstraat zeer moeilijk te bereiken zijn. En nu daar ook rioleringswerkzaamheden even om de hoek op de Tugelaweg bij zijn komen, worden er bij café Ruk en Pluk een stuk minder borreltjes ingeschonken. Toch houdt kroegbaas Jaap de moed erin: "Kom naar Ruk en Plukkie. Desnoods met een parachute." Het is even omlopen, maar als we rond vijf uur het café op de hoek van de Tugelaweg en de Linnaeusstraat binnenwandelen, hoeven we niet te zoeken naar een plekje. De zaak is nagenoeg leeg. Er zit een vaste klant aan de bar, verder er niemand. Kroegbaas Jaap van der Heijden legt uit dat het niet altijd 'rock-'n-roll' is op de woensdagmiddag, maar dat sinds de werkzaamheden de aanloop in zijn café wel heel drastisch is afgenomen "En ik snap het wel, al die hekken zijn geen gezellig gezicht. Mensen wandelen niet spontaan even binnen. Ook kan je er niet met de tram of auto komen." En het eind is nog niet in zicht, de werkzaamheden op de Linnaeusstraat duren nog tot eind volgend jaar. Het werk aan de riolering zou over vier weken af moeten zijn. Jeffrey Hofman van de scooterwinkel naast Ruk en Pluk kijkt daar nu al naar uit. "Mensen kunnen niet zomaar even langskomen voor een lekke band. Ook heb ik constant ruzietjes voor mijn deur, omdat het hier gewoon te smal is voor zoveel mensen", vertelt hij.  Jeffrey heeft wat scooters op de plek gezet op het terras van Ruk en Pluk, want die is nu even dicht. "Dat gaat ook niet. Ik word voor mijn sodemieter gefietst. Mensen op het terras met een borreltje op botsen tegen fietsers of scooters die om de hoek komen. Dat werd gewoon te gevaarlijk", vertelt Jaap.  Ondernemers die door werkzaamheden inkomen verliezen, kunnen via de zogenaamde nadeelcompensatie een deel van de gemiste inkomsten terugkrijgen van de gemeente. Daar zijn beide ondernemers mee bezig, maar die is lang niet genoeg is om alle schade te dekken. Fadia fled Afghanistan at 16, survived a dangerous journey through Iran and Turkey, and spent a year at the Ritsona refugee camp in Greece before eventually reaching Germany. Around five years later, she returns — only to find the gates still closed to her. Today, Fadia volunteers with ROSA, a charity that creates safe spaces for women in refugee camps around Athens. Her return to Ritsona is both personal and political: access to the camp is tightly controlled, and journalists are routinely denied entry. When our team applied for permission to film inside, our request was denied. What we found outside the gates — and what Fadia carries with her — tells its own story. After the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021, millions fled the country fearing persecution, violence, and severe restrictions on women's rights. Greece remains one of the EU's main entry points for asylum seekers, recording over 55,000 applications in 2025 — the highest number per capita in the European Union. Many people spend months or years in reception centres like Ritsona, waiting for their cases to be decided. Greece's Migration Minister has publicly stated the ministry is "not a hotel" for migrants, reflecting a broader shift toward restrictive asylum policies across Europe. Fadia's story is one of displacement, trauma, and the slow work of rebuilding. It is also a window into a system that remains largely hidden from public view.
