Some have proposed that instead of material, the ultimate foundation is to be found in consciousness, information, or even mathematics. But such proposals are no closer to identifying ultimate elements than particle physicists. Should we give up the attempt to uncover an ultimate foundation to the universe? Is our inability to find an ultimate foundation a limitation of language, or of our capacity to make sense of the world, or is it to do with the nature of reality itself? Daube de Boeuf Serves: 8 Prep time: 1 hour Cook time: 4 hours Ingredients ½ bunch thyme 2 bay leaves peel of 1 orange 3 carrots 6 garlic cloves, crushed 1 onion, peeled and diced 4 cloves 1.5kg (3¼ lbs) beef chuck, brisket, beef cheeks, or short ribs diced into 3cm (1¼-inch) chunks (I used rump, but it lacks connective tissue for the best texture) 1 bottle full-bodied red wine 2 tbsp beef tallow salt to taste 1 tbsp tomato purée 500ml (2 cups) beef stock 6 sprigs fresh oregano 200g (7 oz) diced bacon 8 shallots, peeled 24 Niçoise or Kalamata olives fresh parsley, to garnish fresh baguette, to serve Method In a large container, combine three-quarters of the thyme, orange peel, one sliced carrot, crushed garlic, and half of the onion (cut into quarters) Push the cloves into the remaining half of the onion and add it to the container Add the diced beef Pour over the red wine, cover, and refrigerate for 24 hours Preheat the oven to 160°C (320°F) Remove the beef from the fridge and drain off the wine, reserving it for later Remove all the aromatics except for the studded onion. Pat the beef dry with a paper towel Heat a large, heavy-based pan over high heat. Add the beef tallow and sear the beef in batches until browned on all sides Transfer the beef to an oven-safe pot along with the studded onion In the same pan, add the tomato purée and cook for a minute. Pour in the beef stock, stir well, and bring to a simmer Pour the reserved red wine over the beef in the pot, then add the remaining thyme and fresh oregano Add the hot beef stock and tomato purée mixture to the pot and bring to a light simmer In a separate pan, cook the diced bacon until golden, then add it to the beef pot Cover the pot and place it in the preheated oven for 2½ to 3 hours, checking after 1½ hours After about 2 hours, remove the pot from the oven and discard the studded onion and herbs Add the peeled shallots and the remaining two carrots (peeled and barrel-cut) Return to the oven and cook for another 30 minutes Garnish with olives, fresh parsley, and serve with a fresh baguette. This can help you avoid the excess frustration and dismay that comes with shoddy practice and prolonged confusion. But playing the notes is not enough. Like an actor bring words to life, we breathe life into our pieces. And we can do this in an organized way, day in and day out, reliably. Great musicians can play wonderfully in any mood. They do not rely on emotions. Instead, they create music that affects our emotions. This is a trained skill, not an inborn talent. Playing classical guitar is a long-term study. It's something we do in our homes as part of our days. We play for ourselves, for the quality it adds to life. We may enjoy playing guitar for others, but most of the time we are alone with our work. There are methods and formulas for great practice. We can use our time well so that see more progress. We can fix the problems and erase the mistakes. And we can enjoy conquering the plentiful challenges that classical guitar music offers. If you plan to play classical guitar for any length of time, it is worth it to get help. In deze nieuwe serie, de Plek en het Verhaal, gaat FanClub Centrum met Amsterdammers naar plekken die voor hen belangrijk zijn. Plekken waar jij misschien al tig keer bent langsgefietst zonder het ooit opgemerkt te hebben of de geschiedenis ervan te weten, maar waar voor een aantal Amsterdammers een bijzondere herinnering aan kleeft, of omdat ze vinden dat meer Amsterdammers het verhaal achter die plek moeten weten. In deze eerste video horen we het verhaal van Salo Muller, oud-fysiotherapeut van Ajax, auteur en holocaustoverlevende, en we gaan terug naar de plek waar hij zijn ouders voor het laatst zag: De Hollandsche Schouwburg aan de Plantage Middenlaan. Op deze plek, waarvan enkel nog de gevel is zoals het ooit was, gingen begin 19e en begin 20e eeuw duizenden Amsterdammers naar het theater. Maar vanaf juli 1942 veranderde deze plek van vermaak in een plek van onheil, toen de nazi's het als verzamelplaats voor de deportatie van Joden gingen gebruiken. Tienduizenden mensen werden hier uren, dagen of weken opgesloten en vervolgens gedeporteerd naar concentratie- en vernietigingskampen, waaronder ook Salo’s ouders, die hij hier voor het laatst zag. Salo werd toen naar de crèche tegenover de Schouwburg gebracht, waaruit regelmatig kinderen werden ‘gesmokkeld’ door het verzet. Zo ook Salo, die hierna tot aan het einde van de oorlog op 9 adressen zat ondergedoken. Matcha Cheesecake in a Rice Cooker Ingredients - 250g (9 oz) cream cheese - 100g (½ cup) caster sugar - juice of ½ large lemon - 3 eggs (whites separated) - 1 tbsp matcha powder - 50g (⅓ cup) cake flour - 250ml (1 cup) milk - icing sugar for dusting Method 1. Allow the cream cheese to come to room temperature for about an hour for easier mixing. 2. In a bowl, whisk the cream cheese, lemon juice, and caster sugar until smooth and creamy. 3. Add the egg yolks (reserving the whites for later) and whisk until fully incorporated. 4. Sift in the matcha powder and whisk until evenly combined. 5. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until they quadruple in size and form soft peaks. 6. Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the matcha mixture, retaining as much air as possible. 7. Sift in the cake flour in 2–3 batches, folding gently after each addition. 8. Pour in the milk and fold through carefully until smooth. 9. Lightly spray the rice cooker pot with cooking oil to prevent sticking. 10. Pour the cheesecake mixture into the rice cooker pot. 11. Cook using two full rice cooker cycles or until the cheesecake is set. *(Cooking time may vary depending on your rice cooker model.)* 12. Let the cheesecake cool slightly before carefully turning it out onto a plate. 13. Dust with icing sugar before serving. Enjoy! #shorts
