*Dit is een onderzoek uit 2017. We brengen dit onderzoek opnieuw onder de aandacht. In de jaren tachtig werden duizenden kinderen vanuit Sri Lanka geadopteerd door Nederlandse gezinnen. In dit Zembla-onderzoek uit 2017 staat de vraag centraal hoe er bij deze interlandelijke adopties sprake kon zijn van grootschalige fraude, waarbij onder meer zogenoemde babyfarms en acting mothers een rol zouden hebben gespeeld. Op babyfarms zouden volgens verklaringen vrouwen bewust zwanger zijn gemaakt om vervolgens baby’s af te staan voor adoptie aan het buitenland. Daarnaast blijkt uit het onderzoek dat zogenoemde acting mothers tegen betaling werden ingezet om zich voor te doen als biologische moeder van een kind dat eigenlijk niet van hen was, zodat adoptiedossiers konden worden opgesteld of aangepast. Voor de geadopteerde kinderen roept dit vragen op over hun afkomst en de omstandigheden waaronder zij destijds zijn afgestaan voor adoptie. In dit onderzoek reizen geadopteerden naar Sri Lanka op zoek naar hun biologische familie en werkelijke wortels. Ook Zembla onderzoekt ter plaatse de adoptiepraktijken uit de jaren tachtig en de personen die daarbij betrokken waren. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat het bestaan van deze praktijken deel uitmaakte van een breder systeem van misstanden rond interlandelijke adoptie. Volgens verklaringen uit die periode was het bestaan van babyfarms in 1987 voor de Sri Lankaanse overheid een belangrijke reden om tijdelijk te stoppen met interlandelijke adoptie. De Sri Lankaanse minister van Volksgezondheid erkent in het onderzoek het bestaan van babyfarms en kondigt een onderzoek aan naar mogelijke fraude rond de adopties van duizenden kinderen die vanuit Sri Lanka naar Nederland kwamen. Zembla spreekt daarnaast met voormalige medewerkers van een ziekenhuis in Matugama, waar volgens verklaringen kinderen werden verkocht voor adoptie. Ook komt het fenomeen van zogenoemde acting mothers verder aan bod: vrouwen die tegen betaling optraden als moeder van een kind dat ter adoptie werd aangeboden. Een van hen vertelt hoe zij een kind dat niet van haar was heeft afgestaan voor adoptie. Verder onderzoekt Zembla de rol van advocaten, medisch personeel en medewerkers van de Sri Lankaanse kinderbescherming bij de adopties. Volgens het onderzoek waren sommige van deze betrokkenen tegelijkertijd actief als tussenpersoon voor westerse adoptiebureaus. Ook komt een brief uit 2001 van adoptiebureau Stichting Flash aan bod. In deze brief wordt beschreven hoe na het overlijden van een baby de papieren van het overleden kind zouden zijn gebruikt om een ander kind naar Nederland te laten adopteren. Voormalige betrokkenen van Stichting Flash zeggen zich de brief niet te kunnen herinneren. In deze video wordt ook ingegaan op de reactie van de Sri Lankaanse overheid en de Nederlandse staatssecretaris op de bevindingen. Daarnaast wordt gesproken over plannen voor een DNA-bank waarmee geadopteerden en biologische familieleden mogelijk met elkaar in contact kunnen worden gebracht. Jenny Singer thought she had a lung fungus. That would explain the shortness of breath that she was experiencing. The doctor’s other explanation was anxiety, which seemed completely out of the question to her. But as time went on, Jenny found herself increasingly focused on her “breathing problem,” as she called it, in a way that made it nearly impossible to connect with anyone. Eventually, Singer realized she didn’t have a lung fungus. She admitted to herself that she felt anxious and concluded that she wasn’t cut out for the kind of romantic connection she desired. Then, she met someone she absolutely did not want a romantic connection with, and hanging out with him felt great. Suddenly, she no longer felt anxious. It was exactly what she needed.
