Ze zijn boos dat hun teksten zonder toestemming worden gebruikt om AI-taalmodellen te trainen: "Het is ordinaire broodroof." 'Ik wil mijn woorden terug, ik wil mijn woorden terug!', scanderen zo'n honderdvijftig actievoerders vanmorgen bij het Pakhuis, waar het kantoor van Meta huist. 'Zonder ons werk geen AI', valt op een van de protestborden te lezen. De boodschap is duidelijk: blijf van onze auteursrechtelijke teksten af. De protestactie is een initiatief van de Auteursbond, Stichting Lira en de NVJ. Zij eisen transparantie van bigtechbedrijven over hoe zij hun modellen trainen. In het geval van Meta gaat het om de Llama-taalmodellen. Volgens de organisatie maakt Meta voor die training gebruik van illegale databronnen, zogenaamde schaduwbibliotheken. "We hebben geen idee wat er verder met onze teksten gebeurt, we krijgen er geen vergoeding voor, en het wordt tijd dat Meta daar verantwoording over aflegt", zegt auteur en vertaler Maria Postema. "Wij zijn echte mensen, we hebben echte dingen gemaakt", aldus schrijver Gustaaf Peek. "En die echte dingen die zijn gejat door een heel groot, machtig, bijna monopolistisch bedrijf." Rechtszaak Eerder riepen de organisatoren Meta al op te stoppen met het onrechtmatige gebruik van hun teksten, maar dat leidde niet tot een oplossing. De actie van vandaag dient als aftrap van een collectieve procedure die Lira, de Auteursbond en de NVJ aanspannen tegen Meta. "Kijk, jij zet ook de deur van je huis niet open en zegt: kom maar binnen, haal alles weg, dus dat zeggen wij ook niet", licht Liesbet van Zoonen van de Auteursbond toe. "Het moet gewoon stoppen en je kunt dit niet over je heen laten gaan." Met de aanstaande rechtszaak vragen de partijen de rechter om vast te stellen dat het trainen van AI-taalmodellen op basis van werken uit schaduwbibliotheken niet mag en te verbieden dat Meta AI-taalmodellen aanbiedt die mede op die manier zijn getraind. Zwarte lijst Auteurs zijn niet alleen boos over het ongeautoriseerde gebruik van hun werk, maar vrezen ook voor hun inkomsten.
