Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe. The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: https://oxford-union.org/supportus

Cherry, Balsamic and Cinnamon Glazed Ham Ingredients - 500g (1 lb 2 oz) fresh cherries (fresh or frozen) - 110g (½ cup) brown sugar - 50ml (3 tbsp + 1 tsp) balsamic vinegar - thumb-sized piece of ginger, peeled and sliced - 2 tbsp Dijon mustard - 2 cinnamon sticks - 50ml (3 tbsp + 1 tsp) water - 50g (3½ tbsp) butter - ½ tsp salt - 1 whole bone-in ham - fresh cherries, to garnish Method 1. Preheat your oven to 165°C (325°F). 2. Add the pitted cherries, brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, ginger, Dijon mustard, cinnamon sticks, water, and salt to a saucepan. 3. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 12–15 minutes, or until the cherries are soft and broken down. 4. Remove the cinnamon sticks, then blend the mixture with a stick blender or regular blender until smooth. 5. While blending, add the butter and continue blending until fully emulsified. Adjust seasoning with an extra pinch of salt if needed, and set the glaze aside. 6. Prepare the ham by removing the skin. Score a line through the skin, then use your fingers to gently peel it away from the fat layer, removing it in one piece. 7. Score the fat layer with a sharp knife in a diamond pattern or lines roughly 2cm (¾ inch) apart. 8. Place the ham on a lined baking tray. Generously pour one-third to half of the glaze over the ham, ensuring it is fully coated. 9. Roast the ham in the oven for 20–25 minutes. Begin basting every 5–10 minutes, continuing to roast for a total of 1½ hours. 10. Once glazed and caramelised, remove the ham from the oven and allow it to rest for 10 minutes. 11. Garnish with fresh cherries and, optionally, sprigs of rosemary or bay leaves. 12. Serve warm or cold. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4–5 days.

What is the crisis in South Korea? What is the Korean perspective on the crisis and how does it differ from international reactions? What are its causes - in Korean history, society, and its international relations, especially with its close ally the USA? When South Korea declared martial law on 3 December many people in Korea were dismayed and many outside observers around the world were surprised. But KJ Noh predicted that martial law was coming - 12 hours before the declaration. KJ Noh joined me for an insightful discussion of the Korea crisis, its causes, the history of Korea since 1945, and how the crisis might unfold as the USA’s grip on world leadership weakens. ** Links ** KJ Noh appears on the China Report at https://www.youtube.com/@BreakThroughNews https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwZtBKjGSMzWROz7Dbxc-vZDgVfEhENmN KJ Noh “South Korea's Martial Law fiasco: Continuing Legitimation Crisis in the Imperial Vassal State” Korea Policy Institute/ Counterpunch https://www.kpolicy.org/post/south-korea-s-martial-law-fiasco-continuing-legitimation-crisis-in-the-imperial-vassal-state KJ Noh, “The Semiotics of Face slashing” Counterpunch - a quick run down on Korean history and culture in three acts https://www.counterpunch.org/2015/03/11/the-semiotics-of-face-slashing-in-south-korea/ KJ Noh’s prediction of coming martial law declaration appeared in this video (approx 1:20:00) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9omz8nMAraQ KJ Noh, US-backed Yoon Pledges to eliminate anti-state elements/Koreans rise up in resistance. Pearls & Irritations https://johnmenadue.com/martial-law-us-backed-yoon-pledges-to-eliminate-anti-state-elements-koreans-rise-up-in-resistance/ In the interview KJ mentioned a young bar girl who addressed the crowd at an impeachment rally in Busan, and said "I marshalled all the courage I have to speak before you....I want to state that once we get past this crisis, we can't stop" the video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ACIbucjmiM KJ also discussed the lyrics the SNSD/Girls Generation song "Into the new world". The lyrics in Korean and English are below. SNSD (Girl's Generation): "Into the New World" 특별한 기적을 기다리지마 Don't wait for any special miracle A rough road ahead us waits Only an unknown future and obstacles But we can't give up or exchange. Just keep your unwavering love Even though your broken heart hurts In our gaze, no words are necessary In this moment of stopped time. Holding onto this feeling of loving you 그려왔던 헤매임의 끝 Is the end of our yearned-for wanderings: 이 세상 속에서 반복되는 슬픔 이젠 안녕 Farewell to the repetition of sorrows in this world. The song's relevance to the martial law declaration is discussed by Chung Chung Rae, DPK National Assembly member in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vvgp8eKWLEk Many thanks to KJ Noh for sharing his insights with me at the Burning Archive. Scallops with Curry Leaf Butter and Finger Lime Ingredients - 200g (7 oz) unsalted butter, at room temperature (or use salted butter, but omit additional salt) - 24 fresh curry leaves - 1/2 tsp salt - 12 scallops, in half shells - 5 finger limes Method 1. Remove the curry leaves from their stems and place them in a small food processor. If you don’t have a food processor, finely chop the leaves by hand. 2. Add the salt to the food processor and pulse until the curry leaves are finely shredded. Skip the salt if using salted butter. 3. Add the room-temperature butter to the processor and mix until the curry leaves are evenly distributed. 4. Ensure the scallops are detached from their shells but still placed in the half-shells for grilling. 5. Add 1 to 1.5 teaspoons of the curry leaf butter to the top of each scallop. 6. Cut the finger limes in half and gently squeeze out the citrus pearls. Set aside for garnish. 7. Heat a grill until very hot. Place the scallops in their shells on the grill. Cook for 3-4 minutes, until the butter has melted, starts to brown, and the scallops are just cooked through. 8. Remove the scallops from the grill and immediately top each one with fresh finger lime pearls.
