Briscoe was a member of the Fianna Fáil political party and was the first Jewish person to hold the position of Lord Mayor. 1:49 Film 1084: John Foster Dulles speaks about Communism in 1957. This was Dulles first major foreign policy speech of the second Eisenhower administration to the associated press annual luncheon at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. In his half hour speech, Dulles argued that the USA is the only free world country able to pay the cost of deterring the Soviet Union. 3:33 Film 1085 Johnny Dio testifies in front of Congress about James Hoffa. De oorzaak van de brand in de Vondelkerk begin dit jaar is nog altijd niet bekend. Dat concludeert de politie na uitgebreid onderzoek. "Technische sporen ontbreken in de zaak, aanvullende tactische sporen blijken er naar lang onderzoek ook niet te zijn", schrijft de politie. De verwoestende brand in de Vondelkerk brak op Nieuwjaarsnacht uit. In de maanden daarna deed de recherche onderzoek naar de oorzaak van de brand. De politie onderzocht hoe het vuur kon ontstaan en of er mogelijk strafbare feiten gepleegd waren. Na intensief onderzoek concludeert de politie nu dat dit niet achterhaald kan worden. "Verschillende onderzoeksrichtingen werden uitgelopen, maar uiteindelijk moest de conclusie worden getrokken dan de oorzaak van de brand niet bewezen kan worden", schrijft de politie in een persbericht. Gebrek aan bewijs De recherche sprak voor het onderzoek meerdere buurtbewoners en hoorde getuigen. Meerdere getuigen lieten kort na de brand namelijk weten dat het vuur zou zijn aangestoken. Onderzoek wees uit dat hier geen sprak van was. Ook onderzocht de politie het scenario dat de brand zou zijn ontstaan door vuurwerk. Omdat forensische sporen hiervan ontbreken, aangezien die door het vuur ook zijn verdwenen, kan hier geen uitsluitsel over worden gegeven. "Zelfs de metalen wijzers van de klok waren gesmolten", schrijft de politie. Shots begin with straw hatted Chicagoans watching the water show at the eternally attractive Clarence F. Buckingham Memorial Fountain in Grant Park. It sweeps the skyline capturing Chicago’s Art Deco design emphasizing vertical lines, terracotta and abstract geometric ornamentation. Footage tours Museum Campus and Soldier Field in downtown Chicago. The stadium is home to the Chicago Bears, though footage captured here is the 1936 Chicago Police Benevolent Association Fundraiser. The event's opening ceremony features a parade of 1,200 police officers through the stadium, accompanied by fireworks and music from police bands. About 45,000 spectators attended the opening ceremony. Elephants and masquerade clowns also wobble the greenway. Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey circus acts perform. Een lange stoet mensen liep vandaag door de straten van Amsterdam. Volgens de organisatie waren er meer dan 40.000 mensen op de been tijdens de landelijke klimaatmars. De protestactie had vandaag als thema: 'Minder fossiele brandstoffen'. "De urgentie is misschien wel groter dan ooit, nadat we uit een zomer vol klimaatrampen komen". Merel Fiets is met haar 21 jaar al een gevestigde voorvechter voor klimaatproblematiek. Op haar 14e liep ze al mee bij klimaatprotesten in Den Haag en vandaag is woordvoerder namens de grootste klimaatorganisatie van Nederland. Het gaat haar dan ook aan het hart dat zoveel mogelijk mensen vandaag meelopen en hun stem laten horen. Ze vertelt dat ze nog te weinig actie ziet vanuit het kabinet, zoals aanvullende klimaatmaatregelen en dat precies daarom het zo belangrijk is om er wel met z'n allen te staan vandaag. Eisenpakket In de ochtend is er door de milieudefensie al een eisenpakket aangeboden aan de kamer en het kabinet, onder andere minister van klimaat en groene groei was hierbij aanwezig. In dat eisenpakket wordt gesproken over het volledig afstand doen van fossiele brandstof en om te werken aan die schone, duurzame en betaalbare toekomst. Het beëindigen van fossiele subsidies, isoleren van woningen en het nationaal transitiefonds zijn hierin onder meer belangrijke onderwerpen. "Als ik hier om mij heen kijk zie ik echt jong en oud en allemaal diverse groepen mensen door elkaar lopen, dus dat het breed gedragen is en dat iedereen een leefbare toekomst wil daar kun je toch niet omheen." Daarvoor hebben ze volgens hen steun nodig vanuit de regering hier in `Nederland. Prinsjesdag Deze zesde editie van de klimaatmars valt niet toevallig vlak voor Prinsjesdag. Als het aan milieudefensie ligt, wordt het overgedragen eisenpakket meegenomen in de behandeling van de begroting. Het gaat er nu om wat er wordt gedaan met alle vooropgestelde plannen. In het kader van de week van de rechtsstaat laten zij ons vandaag zien wat het betekent om bode te zijn. Joanie Zeën en Pieter Peters zijn twee van de tweeëndertig bodes die in de Amsterdamse rechtbank werken. Elke dag werken er zo'n twintig bodes. "Ik ben een mensenmens en als je een mensenmens bent, ben je hier op de goede plek, want je komt met iedereen in contact", zegt Pieter. Zo ontvangen de bodes alle aanwezigen en regelen ze alle praktische zaken rondom en tijdens de zittingen. Geen waterkan voor verdachten "Eigenlijk alles wat er moet gebeuren in de zaal", vertelt Joanie. "Zoals een kopietje of een glaasje water of een tissue. Als iemand bijvoorbeeld heel emotioneel wordt, dan is dat voor mij een teken om op te staan en iets te doen." Joanie vertelt het terwijl ze kannen water staat in te schenken, maar die zijn niet voor de verdachten in de zitting die op het punt van beginnen staat. "Zij krijgen geen kan, omdat ze die naar de rechter zouden kunnen gooien." Pieter: "De bodes zijn de olie in de machine van de rechtspraak, zeg ik altijd. Die hebben de regie in de zittingszaal en ontvangen iedereen. Je faciliteert het allemaal en dat is mooi. Je kan iets voor de mensen betekenen." De week van de rechtsstaat duurt nog tot en met dinsdag. Grilled sirloin steak and beef fillet steak tartare 🥩 Ingredients - 1 large T-bone steak - sea salt - 1 shallot - 1 tbsp small capers - 3 cornichons - 2 sprigs parsley, picked - 1 egg yolk - 1 tbsp olive oil - 1 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce - 1/2 tsp Tabasco sauce Method 1. Light a charcoal barbecue. 2. Use a sharp knife to remove the fillet (the side without the fat cap) off the bone. Keep the sirloin attached to the bone. Set the fillet aside and liberally season the sirloin with salt on all sides. 3. Push the coals to one side of the barbecue. Place the sirloin cap side down over the hot coals to render the fat. Once the cap starts to flare up, flip it on its side. Place a protein press on top and continue searing and turning every minute until the internal temperature of the meat reaches 46ºC for medium-rare, when probed close to the bone. Remove the steak from the grill and rest in a warm area. While the sirloin rests, prep the tartare. 4. Finely dice the shallot and cornichons. Finely chiffonade the parsley leaves, then roughly chop the capers by running your knife through them a few times. Keep everything separate and set aside. 5. Finely dice the beef fillet. 6. To a bowl add the shallot, cornichons, parsley, capers and beef. Mix together with the olive oil, 1/2 tsp salt, Worcestershire and Tabasco sauce. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. 7. Slice the sirloin off the bone and carve the steak on an angle. 8. Plate the sliced beef on one side of the T-bone, with the tartare on the other. Place the egg yolk on top of the tartare, season both sides with a final pinch of salt and serve.

Het zijn maar twee voorbeelden van de gevallen die het team van het meldpunt Zorg- en Woonoverlast dagelijks tegenkomt. AT5 gaat op pad met sociaal-psychiatrisch verpleegkundige Jeffrey Schurink van de GGD, die de overlastveroorzakers bezoekt en de klachten probeert op te lossen. "Zomaar iemand uit huis plaatsen kunnen we niet, maar de overlast moet ook opgelost." Per jaar komen er bij het meldpunt Zorg- en Woonoverlast bijna 10.000 meldingen binnen. Dat kan gaan over drugs- of geluidsoverlast, meldingen van bewoners met verward gedrag, maar ook komen hier meldingen binnen van Amsterdammers die zich zorgen maken over hun dementerende buurvrouw. Vandaag gaat Jeffrey langs bij de 84-jarige Trudy, die al ruim een jaar te midden van tientallen ratten en haar katten woont. Haar huis is ernstig vervuild, bijna de hele vloer en het meubilair zit onder de rattenpoep en de stank is niet te harden. Het is een schrijnende situatie. Niet alleen voor Trudy, maar ook voor de omwonenden die hier ernstige overlast van ondervinden. "Ik geef de ratten maar te eten, anders gaat alles kapot" Trudy - cliënt GGD Buren hebben meerdere malen melding gedaan, maar Trudy wil niet dat de ratten worden gedood. "Ratten zijn intelligente beesten", zegt Trudy. "Ik wil ook liever een schoon huis maar het lukt me niet meer en er zitten gaten in de muren waardoor ze blijven komen. Dus geef ik ze maar te eten, anders eten ze mijn hele huis op." Duivels dilemma "Het is heel lastig", zegt Jeffrey Schurnk (32). Na dit bezoek staat Jeffrey Schurink weer voor een andere lastige kwestie. Samen met Corinne Kouwenberg, wijkagent in de Nieuwmarktbuurt, gaat hij op bezoek bij Bob, die in een sociale huurwoning op de bovenste etage van woonzorgcentrum De Flesseman op de Nieuwmarkt woont. Hij kampt met een traumatisch verleden in Kroatië en is verslaafd aan alcohol. Alcohol en geluidsoverlast "Bob bemoeit zich met alles in de buurt waar hij zich zorgen over maakt", vertelt Schurink. Maar daar schiet Bob in door en dat levert de nodige geluidsoverlast op. "Hij komt nogal eens in conflict met buurtbewoners. Er zijn meldingen geweest van overlast bij de woningcorporatie en die is er klaar mee. Om te voorkomen dat hij zijn huis wordt uitgezet, probeer ik te bemiddelen en hem naar hulp te leiden." Maar dat is nog niet zo makkelijk. Volgens Bob zijn de klachten leugens en probeert hij zijn alcoholgebruik zelf te disciplineren, zoals hij het zegt. Ook komt hij niet opdagen bij de psychiatrische hulpverlening. Twee keer zoveel meldingen Het afgelopen jaar verdubbelde het aantal meldingen dat binnenkwam bij het Meldpunt Zorg- en Woonoverlast. Het aantal loopt nu tegen de 10.000 klachten per jaar. De meldingen variëren van geluids- en stankoverlast tot zeer ernstige bedreigingen met in sommige gevallen de dood tot gevolg. Zo overleed in 2023 een 25-jarige man die door een verwarde buurman werd neergestoken en liep zijn 29-jarige huisgenoot ernstig letsel op.
