"Ik sta bij het stoplicht en ik was weg. Totaal weg. Ik kon niks meer zien."  Het is een klein wonder dat de 65-jarige kermisbaas Frans Stuy vandaag uit de auto stapt op het Leidseplein. Toen hij 14 maart tijdens een autorit getroffen werd door een hersenbloeding pakten de donkere wolken zich samen boven Stuy. Vijf weken lang lag hij in een ziekenhuisbed en was hij allesbehalve zeker dat hij nu, 5 maanden later, weer op de weg terug zou zijn. "Ik dacht dat ik nooit meer terug zou komen", blikt hij terug. "Ik kon alleen maar zien en niks horen. Ik wist niet wie ik was." Zijn fysiek is op de weg terug, maar praten is nog een uitdaging en kost hem energie. De moed erin houden lukt hem goed, maar af en toe worstelt hij wel eens met zijn gedachtes.  "Soms zit ik wel eens en dan denk ik godverdomme zeg. Van binnen kan ik alles, maar van buiten nog niet. En dan denk ik hoe kan dat nou? Dat ik zo zielig ben. Toch zijn er mensen die zeggen Frans, je hebt veel geluk gehad." Revalideren Gelukkig rijdt zijn vrouw hem overal naar toe, want inmiddels bemoeit hij zich voorzichtig weer met de zaken. Tegelijkertijd zit hij nog in een revalidatieproces bij het BovenIJ-ziekenhuis. "Geweldig lieve mensen daar", zegt hij. De conclusie na de maanden worstelen met zijn gezondheid: hij wil er meer zijn voor zijn kinderen. "Elke dag werken is niet de oplossing." Dat hij altijd maar aan het werk was, in combinatie met zijn levensstijl, heeft ervoor gezorgd dat hij nu in deze situatie zit. "Natuurlijk, die sigaren, elke dag een doos en een biertje. Dat zijn dingen die heel dom zijn." Met beide is hij nu gestopt. "Ja, voor altijd. Ik wil nog 15 jaar door met mijn kinderen." Verjaardag In juli gaf hij een groot feest voor zijn 65e verjaardag. Het emotioneert hem hoeveel mensen er tijdens zijn ziekenhuisperiode aan zijn bed hebben gestaan, maar dat er 250 mensen op zijn verjaardagsfeest stonden, doet hem volschieten. "Ik had nooit verwacht dat ik zoveel vrienden had." Het werken start hij weer op, maar hij heeft zich voorgenomen niet meer zoveel tijd erin te stoppen als voorheen. En over drie jaar gaat hij met pensioen, denkt hij. "Kleine Frans wordt grote Frans", doelend op zijn zoon. "Ik geef het stokje door." Ondertussen richt hij zijn blik alweer op de winter, want naast kermisbaas is Stuy ook de ijsbaankoning van de stad. Na ruim dertig jaar is de finish in zicht voor Bleekemolens Race Planet in Westpoort. De locatie, waar je ook onder meer kunt lasergamen en bowlen, is in de toekomst niet meer rendabel. Dat komt door sterk gestegen kosten en beperkte mogelijkheden om verder te verduurzamen. Op 1 november sluiten de deuren definitief. Familiebedrijf Race Planet opende halverwege de jaren 90 als locatie voor indoor karting, en breidde de activiteiten in de loop van de jaren uit met onder meer bowling, lasergame, karaoke en ander entertainment. "We zijn een begrip geworden in Nederland", zegt mede-eigenaar Sebastiaan Bleekemolen tegen AT5. Toen bleek dat de locatie in de toekomst waarschijnlijk niet rendabel te houden is, zijn nog verschillende mogelijkheden onderzocht, maar is uiteindelijk toch besloten over te gaan tot verkoop. De vestiging maakt plaats voor de bouw van nieuwe kantoorunits.  "We rijden nu nog met LPG-karts", legt Bleekemolen uit. "Verduurzamen naar elektrisch lukt niet, want daarvoor is geen stroom beschikbaar. We zijn er al vanaf 2018 mee bezig." "Traantje gelaten" Daarnaast heeft het pand flink wat onderhoud nodig, aldus Bleekemolen. "Dan maken we de optelsom: krijgen we het dan nog wel rendabel de komende jaren?" Hij benadrukt dat het bedrijf op dit moment 'absoluut geen geldproblemen' heeft. "Maar je moet je wel wapenen voor de toekomst en dan is dit de uitkomst." De ongeveer 55 personeelsleden zijn een week geleden ingelicht over de aanstaande sluiting. "Voor ons is dat wel een van de moeilijkste dingen geweest. Dan wordt ook wel een traantje gelaten", aldus de mede-eigenaar. Het bedrijf gaat de komende periode met hen om de tafel om de mogelijkheden te bespreken. 'Waar passend en beschikbaar' kunnen ze mogelijk blijven werken binnen andere onderdelen van de organisatie. Liefhebbers kunnen na 1 november nog terecht bij de vestiging in Delft, die open blijft voor indoor karting en ander entertainment. Op de Schepenlaan in Noord heeft een brand gewoed in een woning. Het betreft een woning op de tweede etage van een galerijflat. Bij de brand is flink wat rook vrijgekomen. Omliggende woningen werden enige tijd ontruimd. De brandweer kreeg rond 8.30 uur vanochtend een melding van de brand. Ongeveer een half uur later was de brand geblust. Alle woningen in de flat werden vanochtend door de brandweer ontruimd. Inmiddels mogen alle bewoners weer terug naar huis. Alleen de woning waar de brand woedde, is nog niet bewoonbaar. Eén persoon is nagekeken door ambulancepersoneel. Verder raakte niemand gewond. Op beelden is te zien dat de vlammen uit de woning sloegen. De papieren van duizenden baby's die in de jaren 80 vanuit Sri Lanka in Nederland zijn geadopteerd blijken op grote schaal te zijn vervalst. Dat onthulde Zembla in 2017. Over de adopties is gelogen. De moeders die vermeld staan in de papieren zijn niet de échte, biologische moeders. Ook broers en zussen van adoptiekinderen zijn verzwegen. Voor de destijds geadopteerde kinderen, nu allemaal volwassenen, heeft dit enorme consequenties. Zo rijst de vraag of de echte moeders wel vrijwillig afstand van hun kind hebben gedaan. Na bijna drie jaar heft het Internationaal Olympisch Comité de schorsing van het Russische Olympische comité voorlopig op. In Moskou geldt dat als een diplomatieke overwinning. Maar aan het besluit hangt een politiek gevoelige voorwaarde. Het Russische Olympische comité erkent geen sportorganisaties meer uit Donetsk, Loehansk, Zaporizja en Cherson en belooft daar geen activiteiten meer uit te voeren. Olympisch en administratief worden deze vier door Rusland geannexeerde Oekraïense regio’s daarmee behandeld als onderdeel van Oekraïne. Juist de opname van regionale sportorganisaties uit bezet Oekraïne in de Russische olympische structuur leidde tot de schorsing door het IOC. Volgens het Internationaal Olympisch Comité schond Rusland daarmee de territoriale integriteit van het Oekraïense Olympische comité. Door de banden met de sportorganisaties uit de vier regio’s nu formeel te verbreken, neemt Moskou de directe aanleiding voor die schorsing weg. Voorstanders presenteren dat als pragmatische diplomatie. Critici in Rusland zien het als een vernederende erkenning dat de geannexeerde gebieden binnen de internationale sportwereld nog altijd als Oekraïens worden beschouwd. Een volledige Russische terugkeer naar de Olympische Spelen is bovendien nog niet gegarandeerd. Het IOC moet nog bepalen of Russische sporters mogen uitkomen onder de nationale vlag, met het Russische volkslied en in de nationale kleuren. Ook juridisch is de kwestie niet afgerond. Oekraïne vecht het besluit aan bij het internationale sporttribunaal en vindt dat Rusland uitgesloten moet blijven. Rusland is daarmee een stap dichter bij deelname aan de Olympische Spelen. LaMar, who has spent three decades in solitary confinement, was sentenced to death for the murder of five fellow prisoners during a 1993 prison uprising. He has always maintained his innocence. His trial was held in a remote Ohio community before an all-white jury. LaMar is one of three men on death row for whom Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued reprieves, pushing back their execution dates to 2030. "The reprieve, while good in a legal sense in giving us more time, it also increases the pressure, the harassment that I'm undergoing," says Keith LaMar. "I've been undergoing consistent torture since the last reprieve," explains LaMar, who received a previous reprieve three years ago. LaMar's lawyer Keegan Stephan says there is "incredible new evidence" of his client's innocence, and Amy Gordiejew, campaign manager of Justice for Keith LaMar, says he "was framed." Er staat dan een pontwachter naast om het gewenste vierogenprincipe vast te houden. Vanuit de organisatie klinkt stevige kritiek. De ondernemingsraad vindt het plan onverantwoord en de schippers maken zich zorgen.  Volgens directeur Operaties van het vervoersbedrijf, Ramon Rippens is het huidige tekort "rond de tien schippers." Dat betekent volgens hem ook dat het uitdagend is om alle vaarten te kunnen uitvoeren. Tijdens het Pride-weekend vorige week lukte het ternauwernood om de dienstregeling rond te kijken. Volgens Rippens wordt er alles aan gedaan om het schipperstekort op te lossen. "We hebben er een enorm belang bij om meerdere collega's binnen te gaan halen." Het GVB spreekt met Rijkswaterstaat en de overheid om te kijken naar het verkorten van het opleidingstraject voor schippers. Dat duurt nu vier jaar, maar om het tekort op te lossen denkt het vervoersbedrijf dat het verkorten van de opleiding kan helpen. Tegelijkertijd wordt er nu gekeken naar een kortetermijnoplossing.  Van twee naar één Daarom wordt er gekeken naar een proef waarbij het aantal schippers per pont op enkele trajecten wordt teruggebracht van twee, naar één. Naast de schipper komt dan een pontwachter te staan. "Het moet veilig zijn", stelt Rippens. "Anders wil het er niet eens over hebben. Dus we gaan geen concessies doen aan veiligheid, dat maakt dat het onderwerp van gesprek is. We doen het, mits het veilig is." Maar juist op het gebied van veiligheid zijn de schippers binnen de organisatie bezorgd. De proef wordt volgens bronnen binnen het bedrijf kritisch bekeken. Er zijn zorgen en onvrede. Schippers onderling praten zelfs over stakingen, wanneer de proef erdoor komt. Een werknemer, die anoniem zijn verhaal doet: "Mijn grootste zorg is veiligheid, het is heel onverantwoord. Wij zitten in een whatsappgroep met 80 mensen, en er is niemand die zegt 'ik ben voor'." Een andere schipper die anoniem zijn onvrede uit, vertelt: "Rationeel gezien: er moet iets gebeuren, alleen het is de manier waarop. Iedereen geeft een negatief advies en toch is het nu positief geworden." Prachtig beroep Gerrit Wijker vaart nu twee jaar op de pont en vindt het een prachtig beroep. "Welkom op het mooiste terras van de stad", lacht hij. Op de proef reageert hij genuanceerd. "Zorgen? Ja, ik heb het hier naar mijn zin zoals het nu gaat. Dat kan ook op een andere manier als dat goed gaat en je goede mensen hebt. Maar dat is afwachten." Het streven is wel dat het blijft bij een proef, want het GVB ziet ook dat de ideale situatie is zoals die nu is: een pont wordt bezet door twee schippers. En of de proef er daadwerkelijk komt, is nu dus de vraag. De gesprekken lopen nog en directeur Operaties Ramon Rippens zegt op de hoogte zijn van de zorgen die leven onder zijn werknemers. Hij zit om tafel met de ondernemingsraad, die strikte voorwaarden stellen aan de proef. "De zorgen worden duidelijk op tafel gelegd en daar hebben we het met elkaar over", legt hij uit.
