But the clinching evidence was the discovery in the 1960s of a faint background level of radiation wherever we looked in the universe. Cosmologists argued this background radiation was the residual radiation from the Big Bang. But now the story is looking less straightforward and more unknown. Firstly, we found the universe is not just moving but accelerating away from us undermining the redshift as proof of the Big Bang. Meanwhile, the cosmic background radiation, or CMB, requires many ad hoc additions to account for its distribution. Moreover, recent findings from the James Webb telescope have found discrepancies with Big Bang predictions for the universe. Might Cosmic Background Radiation turn out not to be a relic of the Big Bang at all? In combination with the puzzle of the accelerating universe is it possible that the whole current cosmological model and the Big Bang theory itself might be at risk? Poutine Ingredients - 6 large russet potatoes - 1 tbsp vinegar - 50g (3½ tbsp) unsalted butter - 50g (¼ cup) flour - 300ml (1¼ cups) beef stock - 200g (7 oz) cheese curds - salt - oil for frying Method 1. Scrub the potatoes thoroughly, then slice them into 1cm (½-inch) thick sticks. Place the cut potatoes in a pot of cold water with a generous pinch of salt and 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are just tender but still hold their shape. 2. Drain the potatoes in a colander, then spread them out on a wire rack with a tray underneath to catch any excess water. Allow them to air dry for at least 30 minutes – the drier, the better for frying. 3. Heat your oil to 160°C (320°F). Fry the potatoes in batches until they’re a pale golden colour and the outsides are set. This fry is just to cook them lightly. Remove from the oil, place them back on the wire rack or tray, and let them cool for 35-40 minutes. 4. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour and whisk until the flour is fully absorbed. Gradually add the beef stock, about ¼ cup at a time, whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook until it thickens to your desired consistency. Season with salt to taste. 5. Heat the oil to 180°C (350°F). Fry the chips again for 7-10 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oil, drain briefly, and season with salt. 6. Pile the hot fries onto a serving plate, top with cheese curds, and pour the warm gravy over everything. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Andrew Johnson, the Radicals, and the Second American Revolution. In this DeVane Lecture Series course, Professor David Blight examines the impact of slavery and racism on American institutions, past, present, and future.  This course works from an assumption that racial slavery was a central theme of the history of the Americas, and its many endings and legacies live with us still.  The course will pose the question “can it happen here?”  In the 1930s, the “it” was fascism.  The “it” in this case is intended to mean not only slavery and its myriad forms of enduring inequalities, but also the very existence of a pluralistic, democratic, multi-ethnic government and society rooted in the rule of law and living under a common constitution.  There have been many pivot or hinge points in American history when the nature and existence of the American experiment, as well as human freedom and rights were on the line. The course will specifically examine slavery and Yale, the Civil War, and the many legacies of that period – political, constitutional, racial, economic, and commemorative – as they have shaped American life and polity ever since.   To view all the classes as they are posted, please visit this playlist: Can It Happen Here Again? Wereldwijd verloren meer dan 180.000 beleggers bijna 650 miljoen euro door een investering in medicinale cannabis, die vanuit het in Amsterdam gevestigde bedrijf JuicyFields werd aangeboden. Vanaf het voorjaar van 2020 verleidde JuicyFields mensen wereldwijd met torenhoge rendementen uit medicinale cannabis, maar in de zomer van 2022 bleek de website van JuicyFields plotseling onbereikbaar en kon niemand meer bij zijn geld. Zembla deed het afgelopen jaar samen met de Deense omroep DR, de Zweedse krant Svenska Dagbladet en de Duitse media Der Spiegel, Paper Trail Media en Correctiv onderzoek naar deze megafraude en sprak met tientallen Nederlandse gedupeerden. Zij verloren duizenden euro’s tot zelfs tonnen. Een groot aantal van hen deed aangifte bij de politie. Eén gedupeerde meldde zich namens een groep van 124 slachtoffers die samen voor bijna 2,3 miljoen euro het schip in gingen. Maar dat leidde niet tot een strafrechtelijk onderzoek. Gedupeerden kregen al een paar weken na hun aangifte te horen dat er geen aanwijzingen waren voor verder onderzoek of dat de zaak te complex was. Het Openbaar Ministerie laat tegenover Zembla weten dat er geen strafrechtelijk onderzoek is geopend, omdat er “onvoldoende maatschappelijk nationaal belang” was om zo’n onderzoek te rechtvaardigen. Het OM wijst daarbij op de eigen verantwoordelijkheid van investeerders. Fraude expert Rolf van Wegberg, verbonden aan de TU Delft, is daar verbaasd over. Hij noemt de benadering ‘eenzijdig’. “Je hebt een eigen verantwoordelijkheid als het gaat om investeren in bepaalde beleggingsproducten, dat is juist. Maar hier was het doel vanaf het allereerste begin mensen oplichten. Dat is gewoon strafbaar.” Uit onderzoek van Zembla blijkt dat JuicyFields plantages in Zuid-Amerika vroeg om camera’s te installeren en JuicyFields-spandoeken op te hangen. Op die manier moesten beleggers die thuis achter hun computer zaten het idee worden gegeven dat ze zaten te kijken naar de planten waarin ze zelf hadden geïnvesteerd. Wartime Reconstruction and the Ends of War. In this DeVane Lecture Series course, Professor David Blight examines the impact of slavery and racism on American institutions, past, present, and future.  This course works from an assumption that racial slavery was a central theme of the history of the Americas, and its many endings and legacies live with us still.  The course will pose the question “can it happen here?”  In the 1930s, the “it” was fascism.  The “it” in this case is intended to mean not only slavery and its myriad forms of enduring inequalities, but also the very existence of a pluralistic, democratic, multi-ethnic government and society rooted in the rule of law and living under a common constitution.  There have been many pivot or hinge points in American history when the nature and existence of the American experiment, as well as human freedom and rights were on the line. The course will specifically examine slavery and Yale, the Civil War, and the many legacies of that period – political, constitutional, racial, economic, and commemorative – as they have shaped American life and polity ever since.   To view all the classes as they are posted, please visit this playlist: Can It Happen Here Again? Sfincione (Sicilian Pizza) Ingredients - 500g (4 cups) bread flour - 500g (4 cups) durum wheat semolina - 14g (1 tbsp) dry instant yeast - 100ml (7 tbsp) extra-virgin olive oil - 12g (2 tsp) salt - 2 yellow onions, thinly sliced - 10 anchovies - 2 cans (400g each) peeled tomatoes - 200g (7 oz) provolone cheese, diced - 40g (1/3 cup) breadcrumbs - 1 tsp dried oregano - 40g (1/3 cup) finely grated pecorino cheese Method 1. In a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment, combine the bread flour, durum wheat semolina, yeast, and salt. Set to medium-low speed. Once mixed, gradually add 700ml (3 cups) of warm water, mixing for 2-3 minutes until fully absorbed. Add the olive oil and continue mixing for another 3-4 minutes until the dough is smooth. Note that this will be a high-hydration dough, so it will be quite sticky. 2. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes until a smooth, tight ball forms. Transfer it to a clean, oiled bowl, cover with a tea towel, and let it prove for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size. 3. Once the dough has risen, generously brush a full-size sheet pan with olive oil. Place the dough in the pan and gently stretch it to fill the entire surface. Cover again with a tea towel and let it prove for another hour or until doubled in size. 4. While the dough is proving, preheat the oven to 240°C/475°F (fan-forced). 5. In a pan over medium heat, warm 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Add the sliced onions, 4 anchovies, and a pinch of salt. Sauté for 6-7 minutes, stirring often, until the onions are softened and lightly golden. 6. Add the peeled tomatoes to the pan, then add one-third of a tin of water to each empty can, swish, and pour into the pan. Break up the tomatoes and cook over medium-low heat for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally. 7. In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, dried oregano, and grated pecorino cheese. Set aside. 8. Once the dough has risen a second time, remove the tea towel. Drizzle a bit of olive oil over the surface, then evenly press diced pieces of provolone cheese into the dough. Place one-third of an anchovy near each cheese piece, pressing them into the dough. 9. Place the dough in the preheated oven and bake for 12 minutes, until the base is nearly cooked through. 10. Remove the pizza from the oven and spread the prepared sauce evenly over the top. Sprinkle with the breadcrumb, oregano, and pecorino mixture. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 6-7 minutes, until the sauce bubbles and the top is golden. 11. Remove from the oven and let the sfincione rest for 5 minutes before carefully removing it from the pan. Let it cool slightly, then cut and serve warm.
