Who Freed the Slaves: Lincoln, Leadership and Emancipation Policy. In this DeVane Lecture Series course, Professor David Blight examines the impact of slavery and racism on American institutions, past, present, and future.  This course works from an assumption that racial slavery was a central theme of the history of the Americas, and its many endings and legacies live with us still.  The course will pose the question “can it happen here?”  In the 1930s, the “it” was fascism.  The “it” in this case is intended to mean not only slavery and its myriad forms of enduring inequalities, but also the very existence of a pluralistic, democratic, multi-ethnic government and society rooted in the rule of law and living under a common constitution.  There have been many pivot or hinge points in American history when the nature and existence of the American experiment, as well as human freedom and rights were on the line. The course will specifically examine slavery and Yale, the Civil War, and the many legacies of that period – political, constitutional, racial, economic, and commemorative – as they have shaped American life and polity ever since. John Vervaeke, Frank Furedi, and Isabel Millar discuss whether self-reflection is essential to finding meaning in one's life. Can we find our purpose by looking outward, rather than inward? And the contemporary focus on self-help makes clear that attempts to 'know thyself' are very much the fashion. Yet critics argue self-reflection carries with it serious risks. A 2018 Harvard study concluded that there is no link between introspection and insight, in some cases the opposite is true. While the biggest worldwide survey into stress identified that self-reflection was one of the greatest factors leading to anxiety, depression, and in some cases suicide. Should we see self-knowledge as an aim not only misguided, but actively dangerous? Is self-knowledge in fact impossible for as Nietzsche argued we have to use the self to uncover the self? Or is self-reflection a vital and rewarding activity that uncovers meaning and improves our ability to act well in the world? #philosophy #psychology #meaning This debate explores how our contemporary culture is influenced, shaped and potentially misinformed by our most recent self-help culture. Reactions around the world have come in on Trump’s victory. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has already congratulated him and ensured that Germany and the US will keep working together. Other leaders such as Hungary’s Viktor Orbán shared their enthusiasm over Trump’s comeback. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasised the EU’s continued cooperation with the US and the ‘strong transatlantic agenda’ that united ‘800 million citizens’. Before the election, many decision makers in the EU had hoped that Harris would succeed as the 47th president. Dosa with Aloo Masala and Tomato Chutney Ingredients Dosa - 240g (1¼ cups) basmati rice - 125g (¾ cup) urad dal (split black gram) - 80g (½ cup) chana dal (split chickpeas) - 20g (4 tsp) fenugreek seeds - 1 tsp salt Tomato Chutney - 3 tbsp oil - 1 tsp black mustard seeds - 1 tbsp urad dal - 1 tsp cumin seeds - 1 small red onion, diced - 6 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed - 1 thumb-sized piece ginger, peeled and sliced - 2 small green chillies - 12 curry leaves - 4 tomatoes, diced - 1½ tbsp tamarind paste - salt, to taste Aloo Masala (Potato Filling) - 2 tbsp oil - 1 small red onion, diced - 1 tsp cumin seeds - 3 cloves garlic, finely grated - 8 curry leaves, sliced - 2 small green chillies, sliced - 14 cooked baby potatoes, lightly mashed - ½ tsp ground turmeric - salt, to taste Method Make the Dosa Batter: 1. In a large bowl, combine the rice, urad dal, chana dal, and fenugreek seeds. Rinse under cold water twice, then cover with water and let soak at room temperature for 4 hours. 2. Drain and place the soaked rice and lentils into a blender, adding half of the soaking water. Blend until mostly smooth, aiming for a slightly gritty, fine texture. Transfer to a bowl, mix gently with your hand, then cover with a lid and a tea towel. Leave in a warm spot to ferment for 10 hours. Prep the Tomato Chutney: 1. Heat the oil in a pot over medium-high heat. Add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and urad dal, toasting for 1–2 minutes until aromatic. Add the diced onion, ginger, garlic, green chillies, curry leaves, and a pinch of salt. Stir well and cook until the onions soften slightly. 2. Stir in the tomatoes, tamarind paste, and about 200ml (¾ cup) of water. Cover and cook for 35–40 minutes, until the tomatoes, onions, and garlic break down fully. Allow to cool slightly, then blend until smooth. Adjust seasoning if needed, and keep at room temperature until serving. Make the Aloo Masala (Potato Filling): 1. In a pan over medium-high heat, heat the oil and add the diced onion, cumin seeds, and garlic. Sauté for 2 minutes until fragrant, then add the curry leaves and sliced green chillies. 2. Add the lightly mashed baby potatoes, turmeric, and salt. Mix well and set aside to cool to room temperature. Prep and Cook the Dosa: 1. Once the dosa batter has fermented, stir in the salt and mix again by hand. If the batter feels too thick, add a little water until it reaches the consistency of pouring cream. 2. Preheat a large cast-iron pan over high heat for 5–6 minutes. Splash a little water on the pan; it should sizzle immediately. Pour a ladleful of batter onto the pan and spread it in a circular motion to create a thin, even layer. 3. After 1–2 minutes, when the dosa begins to brown on the bottom, drizzle a small amount of oil around the edges. Place a portion of the aloo masala in the centre, then fold three edges over to form a triangle. 4. Transfer to a plate and serve hot with the tomato chutney. #shortsvideo #cooking #recipe #india

Hét exportproduct waarmee Poetin de oorlog met Oekraïne financiert en dat tot op de dag van vandaag onbelemmerd doorgang vindt door Hollandse wateren. Het valt vrijwel niet te achterhalen van wie deze risicovolle, roestige schepen zijn. Maar ze hebben een onduidelijke verzekering en zijn beladen met vele miljoenen tonnen gesanctioneerde handelswaar. Uit maandenlang dataonderzoek van Zembla is gebleken dat in de eerste helft van dit jaar 437 keer een tanker met Russische olie de Nederlandse Noordzeekust gepasseerd. Dat zijn twee tot drie schepen per dag, waarmee Vladimir Poetin de door het Westen opgelegde oorlogssancties omzeilt. Zembla bracht de omvang van deze zogenaamde schaduwvloot in kaart. Het gaat om veelal oude en slecht onderhouden schepen met schimmige eigendomsconstructies waarvan onduidelijk is of ze verzekerd zijn. “Het is een ramp in wording. Het is niet de vraag of er iets misgaat, maar wanneer”, aldus de Rus Vladimir Milov, dissident en in 2002 een half jaar lang viceminister van Energie onder Poetin. Het ministerie van Klimaat en Groene Groei noemt de situatie ‘onwenselijk’ maar stelt op open zee niet te kunnen ingrijpen. Uit het dataonderzoek van Zembla blijkt verder dat de Russische tankers uiteindelijk vaak doorvaren naar raffinaderijen in Turkije, India en China. In deze landen, die niet meedoen aan de sancties, wordt de Russische olie verwerkt tot producten als diesel, benzine en vliegtuigbrandstof. Die producten worden daarna legaal in Nederland geïmporteerd. Zembla werkte tijdens het onderzoek samen met het Center for Research and Energy on Clean Air (CREA). Een NGO, die de Europese Unie adviseert op het gebied van sanctieontduiking. Vaibhav Raghunandan van CREA: “Nederland is binnen de EU de op een na grootste importeur van producten van deze raffinaderijen en specifiek van raffinaderijen in Turkije.” CREA berekende onder meer dat een Turkse raffinaderij het afgelopen half jaar allerlei producten naar Nederland geëxporteerd heeft die voor maar liefst 98 procent zijn gemaakt van Russische olie. De NGO becijferde verder dat de Nederlandse import vanuit Turkije, China en India in de eerste helft van dit jaar de Russische staatskas indirect 650 miljoen euro opleverde. Milov geeft aan dat deze inkomsten van groot belang zijn voor het Kremlin: “Je kunt wel stellen dat elk vat olie dat gekocht, verwerkt en verhandeld wordt als geraffineerd product bijdraagt aan de financiering van de oorlog.
