Homefronts and Battlefronts: The Social Impact of Total War. In this DeVane Lecture Series course, Professor David Blight examines the impact of slavery and racism on American institutions, past, present, and future.  This course works from an assumption that racial slavery was a central theme of the history of the Americas, and its many endings and legacies live with us still.  The course will pose the question “can it happen here?”  In the 1930s, the “it” was fascism.  The “it” in this case is intended to mean not only slavery and its myriad forms of enduring inequalities, but also the very existence of a pluralistic, democratic, multi-ethnic government and society rooted in the rule of law and living under a common constitution.  There have been many pivot or hinge points in American history when the nature and existence of the American experiment, as well as human freedom and rights were on the line. The course will specifically examine slavery and Yale, the Civil War, and the many legacies of that period – political, constitutional, racial, economic, and commemorative – as they have shaped American life and polity ever since. Daarom vieren we komend jaar de mensen die onze stad nóg mooier maken. ❤️ We hebben Amsterdammers gevraagd of er stadgenoten zijn die zij graag eens ‘in ‘t sonnetje’ willen zetten. 🌻 We trappen af met Alexander (27) die zijn trouwe fietsenmaker Maria (67) van Fietsenmakerij het Singel graag wil bedanken voor alles wat ze voor hem en de buurt heeft betekent. Al zo’n 30 jaar runt zij met veel plezier en liefde haar zaak op het Singel, waar Alexander al jaren komt. Voor hem (en veel andere buurtbewoners) is Maria een baken in de buurt. Na 40 jaar in het vak gezeten te hebben, is het tijd voor Maria om wat rustiger aan te doen en van haar pensioen te gaan genieten. Ze heeft twee jonge enthousiaste fietsenmakers gevonden die haar zaak gaan overnemen en vanaf 5 januari voort zullen zetten: Jan Kwiatkowski en Mels van Hooff. Vanaf maandag 18 november neemt Maria de tijd om afscheid te nemen van haar klanten. Jan en Mels zullen dan afwisselend in de winkel aanwezig zijn, zodat zij kennis kunnen maken met de dagelijkse gang van zaken en (een aantal van) de klanten. 29 november zal Maria’s laatste werkdag zijn. Remember when the ozone layer had a huge hole in it? Now it’s shrinking! Here’s what happened... The ozone layer is high in the atmosphere and shields us from radiation. But in the early 80’s scientists noticed the ozone above the south pole was depleting…. fast. Scientists suspected that chemicals in everyday products were rising into the atmosphere and destroying ozone molecules. So scientist Susan Solomon led an expedition to the south pole and proved that the chemicals, called chlorofluorocarbons, were to blame. Her work became the basis for the UN Montreal Protocol, which banned chlorofluorocarbons in 1987. Since then, emissions have dropped dramatically and the latest data from NASA satellites shows that the ozone layer is recovering! Chicken Korma Serves: 4 Prep time: 40 minutes Cook time: 45 minutes Ingredients - 3 red onions, thinly sliced - 200ml (7 fl oz) neutral-flavoured oil (e.g., vegetable or sunflower oil) - ½ cinnamon stick - 1 blade of mace - ¼ nutmeg, grated - 1 black cardamom pod - 5 green cardamom pods - 2 cloves - 2 tsp chilli powder - 2 tbsp coriander seeds - 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger, finely grated - 5 garlic cloves, finely grated - 8 chicken drumsticks - 300 g / 10½ oz yoghurt - salt, to taste - rice, to serve Method 1. Heat the oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the sliced red onions and fry until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel. Set aside for later. 2. In a separate cold, dry pan over medium heat, add the cinnamon stick, mace, nutmeg, black cardamom pod, green cardamom pods, and cloves. Toast for 3-4 minutes, stirring often, until fragrant. Remove from the pan, then add the coriander seeds and toast for an additional 1-2 minutes. 3. Transfer all toasted spices to a spice grinder (or use a mortar and pestle) along with the chilli powder. Grind to a reasonably smooth powder. 4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the chicken drumsticks, yoghurt, ground spices, ginger, garlic, 2-3 tablespoons of the oil used for frying the onions, and a generous pinch of salt. Mix well, ensuring the chicken is evenly coated. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 2-24 hours. 5. Place a large pot over medium heat and, while still cold, add the marinated chicken along with all of the marinade. Slowly bring to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally, and cook until the chicken is fully cooked through, approximately 35-40 minutes. 6. Remove the chicken from the sauce. Bring the sauce to a light simmer, then crush the fried onions lightly in your hands as you add them to the pan. Stir well, then add 250ml (9 fl oz) water. Continue to simmer until the sauce is smooth and reaches a velvety consistency. 7. Serve the chicken over steamed white rice, generously topped with sauce. Garnish with fresh coriander, if desired. For a complete meal, consider serving with a side of aloo gobi.

Een maatschappij die deze nieuwe generaties nodig heeft om te blijven bestaan. Maar moeders dragen in onze samenleving een onrechtvaardig groot deel van de financiële, emotionele en praktische kosten van het grootbrengen van de volgende generatie. Ondertussen kijkt de samenleving voortdurend met een opgeheven vingertje mee of die moeders het wel goed doen. Hoe is dat zo gekomen, en is dat eigenlijk wel waar moeders, kinderen en maatschappij uiteindelijk gelukkig van worden? De mythe van het moederschap komt voort uit ons geloof in tradities en biologie. Schrijfster Aminatta Forna stelt dat we iets al snel een traditie noemen, zelfs als het pas drie generaties teruggaat, zoals het idee van het kerngezin. En wat vertelt de biologie ons eigenlijk? Antropoloog en primatoloog Sarah Blaffer Hrdy wijst erop dat onze hechtingstheorie gebaseerd is op onderzoek naar een beperkt aantal apensoorten, zoals chimpansees. Zorgmodellen van andere primaten en de historische praktijken bij mensen, waar kinderen juist met hulp van meerdere ‘allo-ouders’ (niet-biologische verzorgers) werden grootgebracht worden daarmee genegeerd. Wetenschapsjournalist Lucy Jones beschreef in haar boek Moederteit de intense fysieke en mentale transformatie die vrouwen ondergaan wanneer ze moeder worden, vergelijkbaar met de hersenveranderingen in de puberteit. Voordat ze zelf moeder werd, leefde ze zonder veel nadenken naar de ‘mythe van het individualisme’: de logica van een maatschappij die draait om autonomie, zelfontplooiing en keuzevrijheid. Dan moet je er ook zelf voor zorgen.” Maar we praten zelden over onze collectieve kinderwens. Of je nu wel of geen kinderen wilt, we rekenen als samenleving op de volgende generatie om onze wegen aan te leggen, voor ons te zorgen en ons pensioen veilig te stellen.
