We mochten weer mee op pad met wijkagenten Hans en Jeroen. In al hun jaren bij de Amsterdamse politie hebben ze heel wat meegemaakt. Veel leuke dingen, maar ook moeilijke dingen, zoals de moord op Peter R. de Vries, of waarover Hans in deze aflevering over vertelt: de gijzeling in de Apple Store. En alhoewel Hans die dag niet op het bureau aan het werk was, heeft hij als wijkagent toch een hoop kunnen beteken, door een spil in het netwerk van de Leidsebuurt te zijn. This effort is an experiment to explore the idea of what the voice means, and find new dimensions in understanding the role of the voice while reinventing its interaction with the sounds of the instruments. The voice, while being versatile and dynamic, usually plays the lead role in a traditional ensemble. But if we explore the myriad roles that the voice can play and offer new perspectives, does that change the experience altogether? In this production, apart from playing the lead, the voice is used as a layer on which creation happens, as a complement to the instruments, as a modulation between textures, as just another element in a larger canvas of musical conversation, as a bridge between aesthetics, and as a catalyst of ideas. Exploring this complex and nuanced vision of the voice is the core idea behind this innovative concert. Here we are presenting the first song 01 Colossus Starting with short explorations of melodic contours, the voices come together to celebrate the infinite beauty of this magnum opus composition that sings the praise of Kamakshi of Kanchi. Burnt Cheesecake with Butterscotch Apples - inspired by an amazing meal i had at Brat in London earlier this year. Serves: 6 Prep time: 40 minutes Cook time: 40–60 minutes Ingredients - 500g (18 oz) cream cheese, at room temperature - 150g (¾ cup) caster sugar - 2 vanilla pods - 3 whole extra-large eggs - 1 extra-large egg yolk - 220ml (1 cup minus 1 tbsp) double cream, divided - 20g (2 tbsp) cornflour (cornstarch) - 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and cut into eighths - 60g (4 tbsp) unsalted butter - 35g (3 tbsp) brown sugar - 2g (½ tsp) salt - juice of ½ a lemon Method 1. Preheat the oven to 220°C (fan) / 240°C (conventional). If using a pizza oven, preheat to 300°C and be prepared to cover the door partially and allow the temperature to drop as it cooks. 2. In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine the cream cheese, sugar, and seeds from one vanilla pod. Beat on medium speed for 4–5 minutes until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is smooth. 3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition to fully incorporate before adding the next. 4. Scrape down the bowl to ensure there are no cream cheese lumps. Add 200ml (a little less than 1 cup) of the double cream, and mix for an additional 1–2 minutes. 5. Add the cornflour and mix for 35–40 seconds, just until incorporated. 6. Grease and line a 20cm (8-inch) cake tin. Pour the batter into the tin and place it in the oven. Start checking the cheesecake after 25 minutes; it should take 40–60 minutes depending on your oven. Look for a dark, caramelised top with a slightly jiggly centre. 7. When satisfied with the bake, remove the cheesecake from the oven and allow it to cool completely before serving. 8. For the butterscotch apples, melt the butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the apple slices and brown sugar, stirring gently until the apples soften and caramelise. Season with a pinch of salt and add the seeds from the second vanilla pod. 9. Cook the apples for another 3–4 minutes, then add the lemon juice and the remaining 20ml (about 1 tbsp) of double cream. Stir until the sauce is smooth and the apples are coated. 10. Once the cheesecake has cooled completely, remove it from the tin. Slice and serve with 2–3 apple pieces per slice, drizzling the butterscotch sauce over the top.

Uit onderzoek van Zembla blijkt dat de pesticide-industrie grote invloed uitoefent op de toelating van glyfosaat, een omstreden onkruidverdelger die in verband wordt gebracht met kanker. Ondanks deze zorgen is glyfosaat in 2023 opnieuw voor 10 jaar goedgekeurd in de EU. Hoe kan dit? Zembla legt bloot hoe chemiereus Bayer, bekend van Roundup, via manipulatieve strategieën en omstreden experts, zoals de Amerikaanse statisticus Kenny Crump, de gevaren van glyfosaat probeert te bagatelliseren. Ook in Nederland heeft deze invloed zijn sporen nagelaten, blijkt uit het rapport van het Ctgb. In deze onthullende aflevering onderzoekt Zembla hoe Bayer zich verweert tegen duizenden rechtszaken van kankerpatiënten die claimen ziek te zijn geworden door Roundup, het bekendste glyfosaatproduct. At long last, I cover the most well-known radiation detector of all: the iconic Geiger Counter. Though originally conceived in 1908 by German physicist Hans Geiger as part of experiments that led to the discovery of the atomic nucleus, the detector was not perfected until 1928.
