Physicists Priya Natarajan, Chris Lintott and Claudia de Rham discuss the current state of dark energy and where theoretical and observational physics will go next. Is dark energy as currently described an actual phenomenon or simply a placeholder? Watch the full debate at https://iai.tv/video/dark-energy-and-the-universe?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description&utm_campaign=dark-energy-and-the-universe-2 It was a profound shift to our understanding of the cosmos when 25 years ago astronomers identified that the universe is not only expanding but accelerating away from us. A new force was needed to account for this and dark energy was the solution. But critics claim there is a risk that dark energy is nothing more than an empty hypothesis, since two decades on we still have no explanation for it and no independent confirmation of its existence. Yet it supposedly makes up 68% of the universe. Do we need to get rid of dark energy in favour of an alternative, such as changing Einstein's theory of relativity, or modifying gravity? Is the standard cosmological model of the Big Bang and cosmic inflation itself at stake and might the universe be very different than we currently suppose? Or is the dark energy hypothesis the best hope we have for making sense of the deep mysteries of cosmology? #darkenergy #physics #theoreticalphysics Claudia de Rham is a theoretical physicist working at the interface of gravity, cosmology, and particle physics. She is well known for her ground-breaking research into the theory of massive gravity. Priya Natarajan is a Professor of Astrophysics at Yale University and has been named as one of Time Magazine's top 100 most influential people in 2024 for her groundbreaking work in the field. Chris Lintott is Professor of Astrophysics in the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford. He is also the Gresham Professor of Astronomy at Gresham College, and has worked as a presenter on several popular science projects including with the BBC. Hosted by Jonjoe McFadden. The Institute of Art and Ideas features videos and articles from cutting edge thinkers discussing the ideas that are shaping the world, from metaphysics to string theory, technology to democracy, aesthetics to genetics. ClassicalGuitarShed.com can help you on the journey. If you want to rise to new levels in your playing, it just takes time and strategic work. To play classical guitar well, you need to know: * how to hold and touch the guitar - form and positioning * how to move your fingers and hands - efficient, clean, and fluid * how to learn pieces - reading music, understanding what you see, ingraining, polishing * how to craft the music so it is beautiful - swells and fades, rhythm, touch * how to practice so all these skills improve over time and don't go away At the root of beautiful playing is a solid technique (aka “the way your hands move”). You may have beautiful music in your head, but if your hands can't play it, it won't come out of the guitar. But bad technique puts a limit on your playing. Speed, tone quality, and control can suffer. Good technique gets stronger and more instinctive with every practice. It forms the bedrock foundation for your music. And you may want to understand music so you learn it more easily and it makes more sense. This can help you avoid the excess frustration and dismay that comes with shoddy practice and prolonged confusion. But playing the notes is not enough. Like an actor bring words to life, we breathe life into our pieces. And we can do this in an organized way, day in and day out, reliably. Great musicians can play wonderfully in any mood. They do not rely on emotions. Instead, they create music that affects our emotions. This is a trained skill, not an inborn talent. Playing classical guitar is a long-term study. It's something we do in our homes as part of our days. We play for ourselves, for the quality it adds to life. We may enjoy playing guitar for others, but most of the time we are alone with our work. There are methods and formulas for great practice. We can use our time well so that see more progress. We can fix the problems and erase the mistakes. And we can enjoy conquering the plentiful challenges that classical guitar music offers. If you plan to play classical guitar for any length of time, it is worth it to get help. It's not something we can do on our own, like folk music. I have a structured and organized course to help you play classical guitar. If you like, you can learn more here: https://classicalguitarshed.com/membership/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=What_to_Practice_Next_How_to_Polish_Your_Classical_Guitar_Pieces_Better_than_Before&utm_content=cJEjttXlCRQ If you would like to hear me (Allen Mathews) playing, visit my other youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/allenmathews/

Beijing Beef 🥩 Serves: 4 Prep time: 30 min Cook time: 20 min Ingredients: - 800g (1¾ lb) beef strips (beef fillet or any tender beef strips will work) - 2 tbsp Shaoxing cooking wine - 2 tbsp soy sauce - 1 red capsicum, diced - 1 brown onion, diced - 3 cloves garlic, finely diced - 3 tbsp oyster sauce - 2 tbsp black vinegar - 3 tbsp tomato sauce (ketchup) - 3 tsp sambal (chilli paste) - 200g (7 oz) cornflour (cornstarch) - 400ml (14 fl oz) beef tallow or neutral-flavoured oil - rice, to serve Method: 1. To marinate the beef, in a bowl mix the beef strips with the Shaoxing cooking wine and soy sauce. Stir well and set aside to marinate for 30 minutes to 1 hour. 2. In a small bowl, mix together the oyster sauce, black vinegar, tomato sauce, and sambal. Set aside. 3. Prep your ingredients - ensure all the vegetables are chopped and ready to go, and that the sauce is prepared. Cook your rice and keep it warm, as this dish comes together quickly once you start cooking. 4. Heat the oil in a wok to 180°C (350°F). Dust the marinated beef strips in cornflour, shaking off any excess. Fry the beef in batches for a few minutes until crispy. Remove the beef from the oil and set it aside. Drain 99% of the oil from the wok (you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge for future use). 5. Return the wok to high heat and add the diced onion and capsicum. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until they just start to soften. Add the diced garlic and toss everything well. 6. Add the crispy beef back into the wok, followed by the prepared sauce. Stir-fry everything over high heat for 2-3 minutes, ensuring the beef is well coated. 7. Serve the beef hot with steamed rice and wok-fried greens. Enjoy!

Imagine waking up to a world without birdsong, where silence replaces nature's orchestra. Europe's fields and pastures were once a paradise for birds. Lapwings and larks provided the soundtrack for the farmers at work. But in Europe, the number of farmland birds has dropped by 17% since 1990. In this documentary, the filmmaker Heiko De Groot shows why birds are disappearing and what consequences this could have for us humans. Last but not least, even our food security could depend on them. https://youtu.be/dwdIG1HlcJQ -- Welcome to the official Get.factual youtube channel! 🌍 We are a documentary streaming channel covering history, science, technology, and nature. Mark Galeotti discusses the power structures of modern Russia and who might emerge as the successor to Vladimir Putin. When Putin's reign comes to an end, who will become the new president of Russia? An oligarch, or someone else? To learn more about Vladimir Putin and the hierarchy of modern Russia, you can watch Bill Browder's interview on the topic at https://iai.tv/video/bill-browder-on-surviving-putin?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description Since rising to power, Vladimir Putin has kept a strong hold over the oligarchs of Russia. With these oligarchs being some of his closest allies, it has long been assumed that one of them will take control of Russia once Putin leaves office. But, in this interview, historian and author Mark Galeotti argues that the successor could come from a different class - the minigarchs. #Putin #russia #russiaukrainewar Mark Galeotti is a British historian, lecturer, and writer on transnational crime and Russian security affairs. Beginning with the 1973 series "An American Family," it examines how the physical environment—from ordinary homes to specially constructed sets—plays a crucial role in shaping narratives and emotional dynamics. The discussion includes shows like "Big Brother," where the house's layout creates psychological stress through constant surveillance and manipulated living conditions, and "Love is Blind," where isolation pods and communal spaces are engineered to foster intense emotional connections and conflicts. The analysis extends to "The Circle," highlighting how technology and minimalist apartment designs contribute to social isolation and digital manipulation. By comparing these different settings, the video sheds light on the psychological impact of spatial design in reality television. It underscores how architecture can control information flow, create power imbalances, and affect participants' emotional states, ultimately influencing the dynamics of the shows and offering insights into human behavior within constructed environments. __Membership__ Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYAm24PkejQR2xMgJgn7xwg/join __About the Channel__ Architecture with Stewart is a YouTube journey exploring architecture’s deep and enduring stories in all their bewildering glory. TWO: It's the ultimate anthem of pride. My hometown is queer as folk, as we say in the north of England, and so it's always been very accepting in that sense. I believe that the more you accept others, the more accepting you make your world, and the more you'll be accepted yourself. Filmed by Eliot of Room 79 productions in my home studio. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe. The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Inspired by my mate Ben Shewry's new book, uses for obsession. Lasagne Topper Ingredients: - 1 stick of celery, finely diced - 1 large brown onion, finely diced - 1 carrot, peeled and grated - 5 garlic cloves, peeled and finely diced - 4 tbsp olive oil - 500g (1 lb 2 oz) beef mince (80/20) - 500g (1 lb 2 oz) pork mince - 400ml (14 fl oz) red wine - 2 tins of peeled tomatoes (about 800g/28 oz) - 50g (1¾ oz) butter - 100g (3½ oz) flour - 650ml (23 fl oz) milk - ¼ tsp ground fresh nutmeg - 300g (10½ oz) mozzarella, grated - 100g (3½ oz) Parmesan, grated - 10 sheets of fresh pasta - 200g (7 oz) panko breadcrumbs - 4 eggs - oil for frying Method: 1. To make the Bolognese sauce, place a large pot over high heat and add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Once the oil is hot, add the pork and beef mince with a pinch of salt. Break up the meat to avoid lumps. Cook the mince until it’s well browned and broken up. 2. Add the onion, garlic, celery, and carrot. Mix well and cook for 3-4 minutes. Pour in the red wine and cook until it reduces by half. 3. Add the tinned tomatoes. Fill each tin halfway with water and pour it into the pot to use up every bit of tomato. Break up the tomatoes with a wooden spoon, add a pinch of salt, and cook on low heat for 3 hours, stirring every 20-30 minutes. 4. To make the béchamel sauce, melt 50g (1¾ oz) of butter in a small saucepan, then add 50g (1¾ oz) of flour. Whisk continuously and cook for 2-3 minutes to cook out the flour. Slowly pour in the cold milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Cook the sauce for 8-10 minutes on medium-low heat, stirring often. Season with salt and add the grated nutmeg. 5. Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan) / 350°F. To assemble the lasagne, line a roughly 40 x 20cm (16 x 8 inch) oven tray with greaseproof paper and brush with olive oil. Add a layer of béchamel to the bottom, followed by a layer of lasagne sheets, covering the whole tray. Add ⅓ of the bolognese sauce, ⅓ of the grated mozzarella, and drizzle with more béchamel. Repeat this layering twice more, ending with a final layer of lasagne sheets topped with just béchamel, mozzarella, and grated parmesan. 6. Bake the lasagne in the oven for 1 hour until the top is golden and crispy. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool to room temperature. Place something heavy on top and refrigerate overnight to let it set completely. 7. The next day, cut the lasagne into 12 even pieces. To crumb each piece, dust it with flour, dip it in an egg wash, then coat with breadcrumbs. Repeat the egg wash and breadcrumbs for a double crumb, which helps the lasagne hold together when frying. 8. Preheat oil to 170°C (340°F) and fry each lasagne topper until golden brown on all sides and heated through the centre. Serve and enjoy!
