Danish and British troops had been deployed to Musa Qala in 2006 to defend their allies, the local police, against Taliban insurgents. While this figure represents the official death toll as confirmed by local authorities, the true number could be much higher when missing people and indirect deaths are taken into account, such as from disease, exposure, denial of medical treatment and the destruction of civic infrastructure. And since the so-called ceasefire brokered by Trump last October, nearly 1,400 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks. "The [ceasefire] plan ended up just buying more time for the genocide," says Muhammad Shehada, a writer and analyst from Gaza speaking to Democracy Now! in Copenhagen. "Instead of suspending attacks on Gaza, Israel has been bombing Gaza every day." "The idea of the plan was to divide the reconstruction, rehabilitation, Israeli withdrawal, decommissioning of Hamas and Palestinian statehood into three phases," says Shehada. "So far, only one item of the 20 items on the Trump plan has been fulfilled, and that is the release of every single Israeli hostage in Gaza." Op de Noordermarkt is deze week de laatste week van de 86-jarige Tineke Tonkes. Tonkes is sinds begin jaren 80 actief als verkoper van fournituren en is daarmee een bekend gezicht op de oudste markt van de stad. Aan pensioen moest ze nooit denken, ze vond het werk veel te leuk om te doen, maar nu op haar 86e gaat het echt niet meer. De geboren Groningse neemt daar deze week afscheid van klanten en collega’s van haar vaste plek. "Hen zal ik het meeste gaan missen.” Tonkes, woonachtig in de Watergraafsmeer, begon met de verkoop van fournituren in winkels in diezelfde wijk, toen ze net in de stad woonde. Deze winkels moesten echter tot drie keer toe sluiten vanwege de bouw van woningen. Ze besloot haar werk vervolgens op de Noordermarkt te verkopen en wist daar decennialang te blijven. ’Ik heb op de Dappermarkt en Albert Cuypmarkt gestaan, maar ik vind de Noordermarkt de allerleukste markt van de stad. Door de jaren heen heb ik veel verschillende klanten gehad, en vooral nu zie ik ook steeds meer jongeren komen. Dat vind ik erg leuk." Tonkes’ fournituren bestaan vooral uit biaisband, lint, knopen, maar ook poëzieplaatjes. Die knopen kunnen ook als versiering dienen. ‘’Het werk van Tineke is klassiek. Zo’n winkel of kraam met zulke bijzondere knoopjes vind je nergens meer en dat maakt het zo speciaal.’’ "Ik ga bijna huilen, ik vind het verschrikkelijk en we gaan haar erg missen. Ze staat er altijd in goed en slecht weer. Under the 1951 Defense of Greenland Treaty, the United States already has wide latitude to station forces and build military bases in Greenland. The U.S. currently has one active military base and around 160 troops on the ground. Under the new agreement, signed shortly after President Trump's speech to the United Nations General Assembly last week, the U.S. can build two new bases. The deal keeps Greenland as part of Denmark and would still apply if Greenland chooses independence. "In many ways, the deal is good, because the right for self-determination is approved," says Julie Rademacher, chair of Uagut, the national organization for Greenlanders in Denmark. At the same time, "after threats [for] one-and-a-half years to annex Greenland, we don't have the same faith or the same trust in Americans and the U.S. president." The right  pillow can make the difference between waking up refreshed and waking up with a sore neck. But given you usually can’t try before you buy, it can be surprisingly difficult to figure out which pillow will actually work for you. Wirecutter sleep writer Shaena Montanari explains how to choose a pillow based on your sleep position, what makes a pillow supportive, and how to tell when yours has reached the end of its life. She also breaks down the major pillow materials,  what to look for before you buy, and why it’s probably time to wash your current pillows. This episode covers: • Your sleep position should guide your pillow choice. Side-, back-, and stomach-sleepers need different amounts of height and support, so start by figuring out how you actually sleep before shopping. • The goal is spinal alignment. The right pillow should keep your head and neck aligned with the rest of your body while you sleep. • A pillow that’s too soft may not stay supportive. Pillows compress over the course of the night, and many people end up needing more firmness or height than they initially expect. • Pillows don’t last forever. Synthetic fills such as memory foam and down alternative generally start breaking down after a few years, while materials like down and latex can last longer with proper care. Grilled Pork Scotch Steak with Glazed Pepper and Polenta Ingredients 4 pork scotch steaks, 2-3cm thick (275g each) 1 yellow capsicum 2 red bullhorn peppers 1 green bullhorn pepper 1 red onion 6 cloves garlic 80ml (4 tbsp) olive oil 45ml (3 tbsp) balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp brown sugar 1L (4 cups) chicken stock 160g (1 cup) polenta 200g (1 cup) unsalted butter ½ bunch (5g) sage 1 bunch (40g picked) basil Sea salt, to taste Method Step 1: Prep Preheat a charcoal or gas BBQ. Deseed and thinly slice the capsicum and peppers. Peel and finely slice the onion and garlic. Step 2: Glazed peppers Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a medium pot over medium-high heat. Sweat the onion for 2 mins. Add the capsicum and peppers and sweat 8 mins. Add the garlic, balsamic and sugar. Reduce to low and cook 10-15 mins, until the moisture has gone and the peppers are jammy. Cover and set aside. Step 3: Polenta Bring the stock to a simmer in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the polenta gradually, stirring. Cook 3-4 mins, reduce to low, cover loosely and stir every 5-10 mins. Cook 40-45 mins in total, until soft. Cover and set aside. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Once it foams and smells nutty, or reaches 180°C (356°F), turn off the heat. Add the sage. Pour ¾ of the butter into the polenta and stir until emulsified. Reserve the rest. Cover. Step 4: Pork Coat the pork in 2 tbsp olive oil and season both sides with salt. On charcoal, wait for smouldering embers. On gas, let the grill come to temperature. Grill the pork for 8 mins, flip, then 2 mins more, or until it reaches 58°C in the centre. Rest on a wire rack for 5-6 mins (to come up to 63°C). Taste the peppers and polenta and adjust the seasoning, reheating if needed. Fold the basil through the peppers. Slice the pork on a 45° angle. Serve over the polenta with the peppers and reserved brown butter.
