For the last two years Guyanese-British artist Hew Locke has been working with over twenty specialist curators, behind the scenes of the British Museum for the exhibition 'Hew Locke: what have we here?'. Elke Amsterdammer kent dit gebouw tegenover Centraal Station met de blauwe letters op de gevel wel, maar zeker niet elke Amsterdammer weet wat hier achter de muren gebeurt. Dat vroegen wij ons ook af, dus spraken we met Romkje Fountain van de stichting ‘Jeugd met een Opdracht’, de Nederlandse tak van ‘Youth with a Mission’, een internationale christelijke jongerenorganisatie. Deze organisatie traint jonge mensen voor zendings- en hulpverleningswerk. Je kunt hier ook cursussen krijgen, vergaderingen houden, dispuutsavonden organiseren en daarnaast wonen er mensen die voor de organisatie werken in het pand. Eén van die bewoners is Tobias (31), die hier met zijn vrouw en 3 kinderen woont. Romkje zette de Nederlandse ‘Jeugd met een Opdracht’ zelf op, nadat zij als jonge vrouw in Engeland hier kennis mee had gemaakt. Het begon allemaal in de jaren ‘70 met 2 oude boten achter centraal. Al snel kwamen ze ruimte tekort, waarna ze uiteindelijk dit pand aan het Prins Henddrikkade kochten. John Brown’s Holy War, 1860 Election, and the Secession Crisis. In this DeVane Lecture Series course, Professor David Blight examines the impact of slavery and racism on American institutions, past, present, and future.  This course works from an assumption that racial slavery was a central theme of the history of the Americas, and its many endings and legacies live with us still.  The course will pose the question “can it happen here?”  In the 1930s, the “it” was fascism.  The “it” in this case is intended to mean not only slavery and its myriad forms of enduring inequalities, but also the very existence of a pluralistic, democratic, multi-ethnic government and society rooted in the rule of law and living under a common constitution.  There have been many pivot or hinge points in American history when the nature and existence of the American experiment, as well as human freedom and rights were on the line. The course will specifically examine slavery and Yale, the Civil War, and the many legacies of that period – political, constitutional, racial, economic, and commemorative – as they have shaped American life and polity ever since. Led by PM Donald Tusk, the centrist, pro-European party government had many plans to change the policies that the previous populist government imposed when it took office last year. For example, it wanted to strengthen relations with the EU and legalise abortion. Tusk’s government announced its ambitious “100 promises in 100 days” plan after the election, designed to allow citizens to “hold their leaders accountable”, but many are now disappointed. Also, in a surprising move, Tusk recently used the first upcoming anniversary of his government’s election victory to propose a temporary suspension of asylum law. The plan draws inspiration from Finland’s similar actions regarding migrants entering through Russia. Tusk justified the proposal as essential for national security, criticizing the EU’s common migration and asylum package (CEAS) and warning that Poland won’t implement any European policies that might endanger its safety. Poland accuses Belarus and Russia of transferring migrants to the EU’s eastern borders, which the countries have denied. Hoe is het huisartsentekort in Nederland ontstaan? Al jaren is bekend dat de werkdruk voor huisartsen te hoog ligt. Toch verandert er niks. Veel huisartsen hebben nog steeds geen plek voor nieuwe patiënten. In verschillende huisartsenpraktijen is er een tekort aan personeel. Huisartsen trekken, vanwege dit huisartsentekort, al jaren aan de bel in Den Haag. Door de invoering van marktwerking in de zorg, en vanwege grote bezuinigingen, zijn er voor huisartsen steeds meer taken bijgekomen. Sinds de afschaffing van de bejaardenhuizen bijvoorbeeld, komen er veel meer ouderen bij de huisarts. Daarnaast moeten huisartsen taken die voorheen bij het ziekenhuis lagen, ook op zich nemen. Een van de huisartsen in deze video zegt bijvoorbeeld dat ze taken van de gynaecoloog en de psychiater over heeft genomen. Daardoor wordt de werkdruk voor en de vraag naar huisartsen groter. Mensen gaan nu veel vaker naar de huisarts. De vraag naar huisartsen is gestegen. Het resultaat? Een huisartsentekort. Daarom hebben huisartsen de afgelopen decennia ook gedemonstreerd. Dat deed, onder andere, de actiegroep ‘Het Roer Moet Om’. Verschillende ministers, zoals Schippers en De Jonge, hebben actieplannen bedacht om het huisartsentekort tegen te gaan. Maar volgens de huisartsen in deze video, losten die goede bedoelingen het huisartsentekort niet op. Tot op de dag van vandaag blijven huisartsen druk met randzaken, en blijft het huisartsentekort dus bestaan. De werkdruk van huisartsen heeft ook gevolgen voor patiënten, blijkt uit onderzoek van de landelijke huisartsenvereniging. Los van dat sommige patiënten door het huisartsentekort lastig bij een huisarts terechtkunnen, heeft 78% van de huisartsen ook wel eens een fout gemaakt door de te hoge werkdruk. De werkdruk bij huisartsen zorgt er ook voor dat jonge huisartsen geen eigen praktijk meer willen. De jonge huisartsen worden liever waarnemend huisarts. De langdurige relatie tussen patiënt en huisarts komt hiermee in het gedrang. Commerciële partijen springen in dit ‘gat’, maar omdat zij winst als oogmerk hebben, zijn er zorgen. Huisartsenpraktijk Comed ging bijvoorbeeld failliet, waarna alle 12 de huisartsenpraktijken zijn gesloten. Toen zaten er dus opnieuw veel mensen zonder huisarts. Commerciële partijen kunnen het huisartsentekort dus ook niet oplossen. In deze video zie je meer over het beleid dat ervoor heeft gezorgd dat het huisartsentekort ontstond. Huevos Divorciados Ingredients: - 8 corn tortillas - 8 eggs, fried - 4 tomatoes, cut in half - 3 white onions, peeled and halved - 3 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed - 3 dried pasilla chillies, deseeded - 700g (24.6 oz) tin of tomatillos - 1 jalapeño - 1 bunch of coriander (cilantro) - juice of 1 lime - 120g (4.2 oz) pinto beans, soaked overnight - 1 bay leaf - salt to taste Method: 1. For the salsa roja, add the tomatoes, two of the onion halves, and the garlic to a dry pan over high heat. In a separate pan, toast the chillies for 1–2 minutes until fragrant, then place them in a jar and cover with boiling water to soak. 2. Once the tomatoes, onions, and garlic have a nice dark char, transfer them to a food processor. Add the soaked chillies along with the water they were soaked in. Blitz to your desired consistency—I prefer it a little chunky. Season with salt, and set aside. 3. For the salsa verde, drain the tomatillos and place them in a blender with the jalapeño, 80% of the coriander (saving some for garnish), the lime juice, and a pinch of salt. Blend to your desired consistency, then refrigerate both salsas until ready to use. 4. To cook the beans, place the soaked beans in a pressure cooker or pot along with the remaining onion half, bay leaf, and a big pinch of salt. Cook in the pressure cooker for 25 minutes, or simmer in a regular pot on low for about 1.5 hours, until tender. Once cooked, mash the beans with a potato masher and adjust the seasoning if necessary. 5. Toast your tortillas in a hot, dry pan, and fry the eggs. Place the tortillas on plates, top each with a fried egg, and surround each egg with the two different salsas. Serve with some mashed beans on the side and garnish with fresh coriander. Enjoy!

“No Rights”: Dred Scott, Bleeding Kansas, and the Impending Crisis of the Union. In this DeVane Lecture Series course, Professor David Blight examines the impact of slavery and racism on American institutions, past, present, and future.  This course works from an assumption that racial slavery was a central theme of the history of the Americas, and its many endings and legacies live with us still.  The course will pose the question “can it happen here?”  In the 1930s, the “it” was fascism.  The “it” in this case is intended to mean not only slavery and its myriad forms of enduring inequalities, but also the very existence of a pluralistic, democratic, multi-ethnic government and society rooted in the rule of law and living under a common constitution.  There have been many pivot or hinge points in American history when the nature and existence of the American experiment, as well as human freedom and rights were on the line. The course will specifically examine slavery and Yale, the Civil War, and the many legacies of that period – political, constitutional, racial, economic, and commemorative – as they have shaped American life and polity ever since.   To view all the classes as they are posted, please visit this playlist: Can It Happen Here Again?
