Denis Noble, Suchitra Sebastian and George Ellis discuss the definition of beauty and the role it has in the sciences. Is beauty a casual or necessary part of the universe? Watch the full debate at https://iai.tv/video/beauty-and-the-meaning-of-life?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description For centuries the beauty of the universe was seen as evidence for a divine creator. Now we are more likely to see beauty as an adornment to life, a colourful addition but at root a side-show. But might our rejection of the importance of beauty be a profound mistake? Mathematicians call on beauty to explain the quality of a proof. Cosmology and particle physics employ theories chosen for their elegance and beauty. Einstein concluded, 'the only physical theories we are willing to accept are the beautiful ones'. While we all seek beauty in key aspects of our lives, from geography to fashion, from what we eat to who we live with. Should we conclude that beauty is not a subjective or passing cultural fashion but instead an objective and vital quality of the universe? Does the centrality of beauty tell us something about the very character of the universe and reality? Should we place the pursuit of beauty at the centre of our lives or are we right to have relegated beauty to a passing entertainment, valuable and even important but essentially superficial? #beauty #science #symmetry Join Dominic Walliman as he hosts a panel discussion on the nature of beauty. Debating the topic are Denis Noble, Emeritus Rrofessor of Cardiovascular Physiology at the University of Oxford, Suchitra Sebastian, condensed matter physicist and recent winner of the New Horizons in Physics Prize, and George Ellis, mathematician at the University of Cape Town and Stephen Hawking collaborator. On October 7th, 2023, the global narrative surrounding Palestine underwent a profound shift. In this powerful video, Yanis Varoufakis unpacks the media and political bias that portrays events in Gaza as isolated incidents, ignoring the ongoing realities of occupation and the struggle for Palestinian freedom. Varoufakis emphasizes the critical need to distinguish between legitimate resistance to oppression and actions that breach international law. He delves into the escalating violence faced by Palestinians and critiques the international community’s complicity, particularly the role of the U.S. in enabling the ongoing genocide of Palestinians by Israel. Drawing on historical parallels with colonialism in the U.S., South Africa, and Australia, Varoufakis calls for a fundamental re-evaluation of Western perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He argues that the fight for Palestinian liberation is not just a regional issue but a crucial step toward global justice and humanity. This clip is from a recent livestream on this subject, featuring Yanis Varoufakis and many other voices. It's organized, structured, and strategic from the beginning, so you make the most of your time and avoid injury and frustration. Build your basics, fill the gaps, and rise to more advanced levels of playing. Free sheet music library: https://classicalguitarshed.com/music Free tutorials: https://classicalguitarshed.com/cgs-archives Structured classical guitar course: https://classicalguitarshed.com/membership Are you learning classical guitar or would like to learn classical guitar? ClassicalGuitarShed.com can help you on the journey. If you want to rise to new levels in your playing, it just takes time and strategic work. To play classical guitar well, you need to know: * how to hold and touch the guitar - form and positioning * how to move your fingers and hands - efficient, clean, and fluid * how to learn pieces - reading music, understanding what you see, ingraining, polishing * how to craft the music so it is beautiful - swells and fades, rhythm, touch * how to practice so all these skills improve over time and don't go away At the root of beautiful playing is a solid technique (aka “the way your hands move”). You may have beautiful music in your head, but if your hands can't play it, it won't come out of the guitar. But bad technique puts a limit on your playing. Speed, tone quality, and control can suffer. Good technique gets stronger and more instinctive with every practice. It forms the bedrock foundation for your music. And you may want to understand music so you learn it more easily and it makes more sense. This can help you avoid the excess frustration and dismay that comes with shoddy practice and prolonged confusion. But playing the notes is not enough. Like an actor bring words to life, we breathe life into our pieces. And we can do this in an organized way, day in and day out, reliably. Great musicians can play wonderfully in any mood. They do not rely on emotions. Instead, they create music that affects our emotions. This is a trained skill, not an inborn talent. Playing classical guitar is a long-term study. It's something we do in our homes as part of our days. We play for ourselves, for the quality it adds to life. We may enjoy playing guitar for others, but most of the time we are alone with our work. There are methods and formulas for great practice. We can use our time well so that see more progress. We can fix the problems and erase the mistakes. And we can enjoy conquering the plentiful challenges that classical guitar music offers. If you plan to play classical guitar for any length of time, it is worth it to get help. It's not something we can do on our own, like folk music. I have a structured and organized course to help you play classical guitar. Vanilla is considered the king of spices and is particularly indispensable in Christmas baking. The international market craves the brown gold. Vanilla prices have skyrocketed in recent years. Madagascar, the world's largest exporter of the pod, is struggling with dramatic consequences. The battle for vanilla has broken out, and many Europeans are involved. On the international market, up to 700 euros are currently paid for a kilogram of bourbon vanilla. Crimes are even committed for this. Farmers lynch thieves, and thieves kill farmers. In Madagascar, there has been a close connection between vanilla and violence for years. European firms and companies are also in the thick of things. They all need vanilla to do business in the international market. https://youtu.be/-San7qEfAMg -- Welcome to the official Get.factual youtube channel! 🌍 We are a documentary streaming channel covering history, science, technology, and nature. “Mexico Will Poison Us”: War of Conquest, the Compromise, and Kansas-Nebraska. In this DeVane Lecture Series course, Professor David Blight examines the impact of slavery and racism on American institutions, past, present, and future. This course works from an assumption that racial slavery was a central theme of the history of the Americas, and its many endings and legacies live with us still. The course will pose the question “can it happen here?” In the 1930s, the “it” was fascism. The “it” in this case is intended to mean not only slavery and its myriad forms of enduring inequalities, but also the very existence of a pluralistic, democratic, multi-ethnic government and society rooted in the rule of law and living under a common constitution. There have been many pivot or hinge points in American history when the nature and existence of the American experiment, as well as human freedom and rights were on the line. The course will specifically examine slavery and Yale, the Civil War, and the many legacies of that period – political, constitutional, racial, economic, and commemorative – as they have shaped American life and polity ever since.
