In the speech, Nixon announced his intention to resign the presidency the following day, August 9, 1974, due to the Watergate scandal. Nixon's resignation was the culmination of what he referred to in his speech as the "long and difficult period of Watergate", a 1970s federal political scandal stemming from the break-in of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters at the Watergate Office Building by five men during the 1972 presidential election and the Nixon administration's subsequent attempts to cover up its involvement in the crime. Nixon ultimately lost much of his popular and political support as a result of Watergate. At the time of his resignation the next day, Nixon faced almost certain impeachment and removal from office. According to his address, Nixon said he was resigning because "I have concluded that because of the Watergate matter I might not have the support of the Congress that I would consider necessary to back the very difficult decisions and carry out the duties of this office in the way the interests of the nation would require." Nixon also stated his hope that, by resigning, "I will have hastened the start of that process of healing which is so desperately needed in America." Na tweeënhalfjaar is het bijna helemaal af, het vernieuwde Hoofddorpplein. Inclusief vernieuwd amfitheater, tribune en zingende buurtbewoners. Initiatiefnemers Femma Stegenga en Jerry Rijstenbil hebben zich al die tijd ingezet om de plannen van de buurt werkelijkheid te maken.  "Je komt hier vanaf de snelweg, het is eigenlijk het visitekaartje van Amsterdam", vertelt Stegenga. "Dus dachten we: hoe kunnen we dit plein zo mooi mogelijk maken, zodat mensen echt genieten? Met een amfitheater, een intieme sfeer, een plek waar je een kop koffie kunt drinken of met elkaar kunt afspreken." Dat lijkt volgens verschillende buurtbewoners te lukken. "Ik vind het er heel mooi en verzorgd uitzien. Je kunt hier ook makkelijker buren ontmoeten", zegt een bezoeker. Een ander merkt op dat het plein steeds levendiger wordt. "Langzamerhand gaan er steeds meer mensen zitten. Je ziet mensen een podcast luisteren of even een sigaretje roken." De initiatiefnemers bedachten verschillende plannen voor de herinrichting van het plein. Bewoners mochten vervolgens stemmen op hun favoriete ontwerp en deze werd vervolgens uitgevoerd. Stegenga en Rijstenbil hebben met flyers en eindeloos veel gesprekken buurtbewoners overtuigd van hun plannen. Deze plannen werden betaald met geld vanuit de buurtbudgetten, in totaal is er 185.000 euro besteed aan het plein. Hiervan is de tribune zelf gebouwd met staal en duurzaam hout, ook is er beplanting om het plein en belichting gemaakt.  Volgens de initiatiefnemers was het proces soms pittig. "Op een gegeven moment dachten we echt: dit is te veel voor gewone buurtbewoners", vertellen ze. "Gelukkig hebben we heel veel hulp gehad van Fadoua gebiedsmakelaar van stadsdeel Zuid. En als wij het even niet meer wisten, wist zij altijd de juiste persoon met wie ze ons kon verbinden." Following the headlines from Ceuta, migration has once again become a major topic of debate. According to the Spanish government, most of the roughly 70,000 migrants have already returned to Morocco, but around 2,000 people are reportedly still in Ceuta. When it comes to migration, Spain has been taking a much more liberal approach than many other European countries. One reason for this is that the country views migration as an important factor for its economy. Earlier this year, Spain granted hundreds of thousands of undocumented people the opportunity to regularize their status, giving them a chance to find employment. This measure applies to people who had already been living in Spain for at least five months at the time. Spain will hold elections again next year. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been in power since 2018, but at the moment his PSOE party is polling less strongly than it did in the last election. Beyond the current crises, there are of course many other issues shaping the political debate: under Sánchez, the minimum wage has risen significantly and the economy is growing. At the same time, many people continue to struggle with the ongoing housing crisis and rising rents. Something else that caught our attention during our research: among Gen Z and Millennials in Spain, almost one in four believes that an authoritarian system would be preferable to democracy. The share is significantly lower among older generations. We’ll continue to keep an eye on how the views of young people in Spain will evolve. Rice cooker updise down pineapple cake Ingredients 115g (4 oz) butter 180g (6 ½ oz) light brown sugar 400g pineapple peaces 10 maraschino cherries 120g (4 ¼ oz) cake flour 5g (1 tsp) baking powder ¼ tsp salt 4 large eggs 200g (7 oz) caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla essence Directions Add the brown sugar and butter to a rice cooker and start it on a normal function. To make the cake batter, separate the eggs into two bowls—whites in one, yolks in the other. Whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form, then slowly whisk in the caster sugar to create a meringue. Add the vanilla essence to the yolks and whisk until they are a light yellow colour. Gently fold the yolks into the meringue. Then, in 2-3 batches, carefully fold in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Turn your rice cooker off after about 10 minutes. Then arrange the pineapple pieces and cherries on top of the caramel that should have formed Pour the cake batter over the pineapple in the pan and spread it evenly. Start your rice cooker on a normal function and once it's finished use a toothpick or a cake tester to make sure it's cooked by putting it to the bottom of the cake and pulling it out. If it comes out clean, it's good to go. Carefully turn the cake out and enjoy while still warm.
