In this discussion, Tiare interviews Craig Gent, writer, editor, and researcher, and a director at Novara Media. They dive into the urgent themes of Gent’s latest book, Cyberboss — examining the rise of algorithmic management, the growing insecurity of workers, and the shifting role of labour unions in the face of technological control. Together, they explore how digital systems are undermining worker autonomy and fueling dissatisfaction, while navigating the complex politics within unions today. This is a must-watch for anyone concerned with the future of work and the fight for labour rights in the digital age. At some point around AD 600-700, a legend started spreading about a princess who snuck mulberry tree seeds and silkworm eggs into the Buddhist kingdom of Khotan (present-day northwest China). Sericulture, the ancient Chinese technique of silk farming, had been kept a secret for thousands of years. Integral to this technique were silkworms that had been bred to evolve into moths without wings, and needed a strict diet of white mulberry tree leaves (morus alba). Khotan desperately wanted access to this incredibly lucrative business, and so a political marriage (with a little act of matrimonial smuggling) was arranged with a princess from a nearby 'eastern kingdom'. The princess hid mulberry tree seeds and silkworm eggs in her headdress, crossed the border, married the king, introduced sericulture to her new kingdom, guaranteed that her wardrobe was continually updated with fresh silk robes and eventually became a venerated figure of near-saintly status - not bad for a single day's smuggling? Protests against mass tourism are growing in Europe's most visited hotspots. In Spain, this has come to a headway this summer, when thousands of people protested across the country. But how can these regions, who heavily depend on the steady income tourism provides, put limitations on it? For this 1st episode of ‘Double Take’, our new series of on-the-ground reporting taking a closer look at what moves Europe, we went to Menorca. Following in the footsteps of its neighbours Ibiza and Mallorca, this small Balearic island is also increasingly suffering the consequences of overtourism, and its inhabitants are thinking about ways of dealing with it! José, 35, has seen the village where his family lives become a tourist playground, before the community proposed an unconventional solution. Victor, 31, witnessed the gentrification and following increase of prices in the town he’s raising his kids in, after tourists started to buy up real estate in the area.
Denis Noble, Frances Ashcroft and Johnjoe McFadden discuss our complex and populated biology and genetics. Biologically, there is no such thing as an individual... Does it make sense to speak of ourselves as individuals? Watch the full debate at https://iai.tv/video/the-agents-of-life?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description From cats to caterpillars, hedgehogs to humans, we divide the world of living things into distinct and separate organisms. But while central to our perception of the world and evolution, these distinctions now look dangerously simplistic. Studies show that the boundaries between one creature and the next are not clear. Forests of 'distinct' trees are often connected by networks of fungi which, like a great nervous system, are essential to their survival. And almost all large creatures co-exist with great swarms of bacteria that are essential to their very life function. Should we move away from an organism centred biology, and recognise the interconnected character of life? Should we reject the idea that a living thing constitutes a distinct and stable entity? Or are discrete units of life essential to our understanding of the world? #biology #organisms #genetics Oxford biologist Denis Noble, pioneering researcher and geneticist Frances Ashcroft, and multidisciplinary scientist Johnjoe McFadden, debate life and its environment. Japanese Curry Bread (Kare Pan) Ingredients - 500g (1 lb) diced beef rump - 1 carrot, diced - 1 medium potato, diced - 1 brown onion, diced - ½ tbsp curry powder - 2 tbsp flour - 500ml (2 cups) beef stock - 30g (2 tbsp) oil - 3.5g (1 tsp) yeast - 200g (1½ cups) flour - 15g (1 tbsp) sugar - 8g (1½ tsp) salt - 2 eggs, beaten - 150g (1½ cups) panko breadcrumbs Method 1. Place the cubed beef, fat-side down, in a cold pan. Turn the heat to medium-high. Once most of the fat has rendered, flip the beef to brown all sides. Remove the beef from the pan, leaving the rendered fat in the pan. 2. Turn the heat down to medium. Add the carrot, onion, and potato to the pan with a pinch of salt. Sauté for 5–6 minutes until the vegetables start to soften. 3. Add the curry powder, a pinch of salt, and the flour. Stir everything together. 4. Pour in the beef stock and stir until the sauce comes to a simmer and thickens. Ensure there are no lumps. Add the browned beef back to the pan, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 35 minutes until the beef is tender. 5. Remove the curry from the heat and spread it on a tray to cool completely in the fridge. The curry should be thick enough to stuff into the bread later—if it's too thin, it will be difficult to work with. 6. In a large bowl, mix 120ml (½ cup) warm water with the yeast, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Add the flour and stir to bring the dough together. 7. Once the dough comes together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 6–7 minutes until smooth. The dough is high in moisture, so keep the surface well-dusted with flour to prevent sticking. 8. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size. 9. Once risen, divide the dough into six equal pieces and shape each into a ball. Roll each ball out to the size of a teacup saucer. 10. Place 2–3 tablespoons of the cooled curry mixture in the centre of each dough round. Fold the dough over like a taco, crimping the edges to seal. Repeat with the rest of the dough. Any leftover curry can be stored in the fridge and served over rice later. 11. Dip each filled dough in the beaten eggs, then roll in panko breadcrumbs to coat completely. Place the breaded Kare pan on a tray dusted with extra breadcrumbs to prevent sticking. 12. Heat a deep fryer or a large pot of oil to 165°C (325°F). Carefully fry the Kare pan for 10–12 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown all over. 13. Serve and enjoy!

In April 1066, Haley's Comet caused panic across Europe. Many feared the world was ending. Within six months, two powerful monarchs in Western Europe were slain, leading to William the Conqueror's rise in England and the end of the Anglo-Saxon way of life. William's rule in England involved building castles, suppressing rebellions, and implementing the Domesday Book in 1085 for a thorough land survey. William's remorseful reflections on his actions in England as expressed in later accounts. Welcome to Chronicle; your home for all things medieval history! Antebellum Yale and the Coming of the Civil War. In this DeVane Lecture Series course, Professor David Blight examines the impact of slavery and racism on American institutions, past, present, and future. This course works from an assumption that racial slavery was a central theme of the history of the Americas, and its many endings and legacies live with us still. The course will pose the question “can it happen here?” In the 1930s, the “it” was fascism. The “it” in this case is intended to mean not only slavery and its myriad forms of enduring inequalities, but also the very existence of a pluralistic, democratic, multi-ethnic government and society rooted in the rule of law and living under a common constitution. There have been many pivot or hinge points in American history when the nature and existence of the American experiment, as well as human freedom and rights were on the line. The course will specifically examine slavery and Yale, the Civil War, and the many legacies of that period – political, constitutional, racial, economic, and commemorative – as they have shaped American life and polity ever since. Psychologist Carol Gilligan discusses her life's work listening to women, too often excluded completely from the theories that we take for granted. How moral laws fail feminism. Watch Carol Gilligan re-interpret love with other philosophers and scholars here https://iai.tv/video/loving-oneself-and-loving-others?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description&utm_campaign=studio In this in-depth interview, Carol Gilligan delves into the biggest studies she conducted throughout her decades-long career as a psychologist — the very same studies with which she shook-up and upended the patriarchal frameworks of the discipline itself. From her pivotal 1980s book In a Different Voice to her most recent work In a Human Voice, she explains how the voices of men and women are not different; rather, they differ because they are gendered by the structures which aim to cover and silence them, in order to preserve power. #feminism #psychology #women Carol Gilligan is an ethicist, psychologist and Professor of Humanities and Applied Psychology at New York University. She is a feminist icon, and the mind behind the revolutionary "ethics of care". She is best known for her now classic work In a Different Voice. @KitchenaidANZ sent me their Semi Automatic Espresso Machine in cast iron black to match my black stand mixer. So, I thought I would test it out on a new recipe I’ve been wanting to make… but first coffee! Oh and did you know, it’s one of the quietest coffee machines on the market certified by Quiet Mark? #Kitchenaid #madewithkitchenaid #coffee #recipe #ad Coffee Rub Tomahawk Steak Ingredients - 1 tomahawk steak - 15g (1 tbsp) salt - 7.5g (½ tbsp) garlic powder - 7.5g (½ tbsp) black pepper - 7.5g (½ tbsp) paprika - 15g (1 tbsp) fine ground coffee - 15g (1 tbsp) neutral-flavoured oil Method 1. In a small bowl, mix together the salt, garlic powder, black pepper, paprika, and ground coffee. 2. Rub the neutral-flavoured oil all over the tomahawk steak, then generously season it with the spice mix on all sides. 3. Place the steak into a smoker or oven preheated to 140°C (285°F) and cook until the internal temperature reaches your preferred doneness. I pulled mine at 44°C (111°F) for rare. 4. Once you’ve reached your desired internal temperature, remove the steak from the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes. 5. Heat your barbecue or grill to a high temperature. Sear the steak on both sides until you get a good colour and char. Remove from the grill, rest for another 5 minutes, then slice and serve. Coffee BBQ sauce Ingredients - 120ml (½ cup) tomato ketchup - 20ml (1 tbsp) sherry vinegar (or apple cider vinegar) - 20ml (1 tbsp) honey - 20g (1 tbsp) brown sugar - 6 dashes Worcestershire sauce - 36ml (1 double shot) fresh espresso Method 1. Place all the ingredients into a saucepan and bring to a light simmer, stirring constantly. 2. Lower the heat and cook for 6-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly. It's ready to serve!

Once seen as a pillar of stability in Europe, Germany is unravelling. Its economy is in decline, and the far-right AfD recently won a state election, marking a disturbing shift in the political landscape. The country has reintroduced border controls, violating a core EU principle. And its legacy parties continue to slide into authoritarianism, suppressing pro-Palestinian voices at home while supporting Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Meanwhile, a housing crisis and soaring rents are straining German citizens, even as the government spends billions to support the Ukraine war and its foreign policy agenda. How did Germany get here? What does it mean for Europe? And how do we push back? Our panel — as well as a few new members of the team — will be weighing in, taking your questions and more. Join us!
