Introduced in the early 1970s, the 155mm Extended Range Full Bore (ERFB) shell was a radical departure from earlier designs, using a variety of novel aerodynamic features to achieve nearly twice the range of conventional 155mm shells. It was the brainchild of Dr. Gerald Vincent Bull, a largely forgotten genius best known for designing an enormous satellite launching gun called Project Babylon for Saddam Hussein’s Iraq and for his assassination in 1990. 0:00 Intro 1:33 Gerald Bull: the Early Years 4:03 Project HARP 5:35 Space Research Corporation 6:16 GC-45 Howitzer 6:45 ERFB Shell: Introduction 8:30 ERFB Shell: Design Principles 10:12 ERFB Shell: Performance 12:10 The South Africa Deal and Aftermath 14:09 Iraq and Project Babylon 15:06 Assassination 16:24 Outro Documentary on Gerald Bull: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvL9qcJKqOw&t=1s My play ‘Countdown to Babylon’: https://vimeo.com/852105900?share=copy SOURCES Grant, Dale, Wilderness of Mirrors: the Life of Gerald Bull, Prentice-Hall Canada, Inc., Scarborough, ON, 1991 Adams, James, Bull’s Eye: the Assassination and Life of Supergun Inventor Gerald Bull, Times Books, 1992 Lowther, William, Arms and the Man: Dr. Gerald Bull, Iraq, and the Supergun, Seal Books, 1991 https://soapbox.manywords.press/2018/07/05/extended-range-full-bore-rounds/

Must Farm is a Bronze Age archaeological site in Cambridgeshire. This prehistoric settlement consists of five stilted houses built above a river. It is remarkably well-preserved due to its sudden destruction by a catastrophic fire, which caused the structures to collapse into oxygen-deprived river silts. It is called the Pompeii of the Bronze Age and gives an unparalleled glimpse of life 3,000 years ago. In Colchester, Roman treasure was hidden as Queen Boudicca rampaged through the town. In Oakington, a dig uncovers burial rituals that reveal the secrets of Anglo-Saxon childbirth. Welcome to Chronicle; your home for all things medieval history! Avshalom Elitzur talks physics, consciousness, quantum mechanics, politics and the universe. What is the evidence for backwards causation, and what does it mean for our understanding of reality? Watch Avshalom debate Michio Kaku, Tim Maudlin and Jimena Canales on the subject of time: https://iai.tv/video/the-trouble-with-time?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description&utm_campaign=avshalom-elitzur-on-physics-consciousness-and-politics Philosophers have been trying to understand the mystery of consciousness for millennia with little success. Physicist-philosopher Avshalom Elitzur believes that panpsychism provides the most promising explanation of consciousness. Join Elitzur for a wide-ranging discussion covering quantum physics, consciousness, time, environmentalism, and the Israel-Palestine conflict. Interviewed by IAI Assistant Producer Simon Custer. #physics #quantumphysics #quantum #consciousness #time Avshalom Elitzur (אבשלום כורש אליצור) is a Professor in the Centre for Quantum Studies at Chapman University in the United States and is deemed by many to be an intellectual powerhouse in both the fields of physics and philosophy. Having left school at sixteen to work as a lab technician, he presented a paper on quantum mechanics at Temple University, after which he was invited to Tel Aviv University to complete his doctorate on the subject. Elitzur is best known for his work on the Elitzur–Vaidman bomb-testing problem in quantum mechanics. 00:00 Introduction 00:13 Why do you defend panpsychism? 02:00 What evidence does quantum mechanics give for panpsychism? 03:27 How do you explain unified human consciousness? 07:44 Are there political forces in the scientific community that have repressed your ideas? 07:59 Why does panpsychism resolve the mystery of consciousness better than materialism? 09:43 Why do you defend backwards causation? 12:20 Can backwards causation be incorporated into a wider metaphysical view? 13:35 Does the human mind have the capacity to develop a theory of everything? 14:43 Why is there something rather than nothing, and is that a question for philosophy or physics? 17:22 Does panpsychism have ethical implications? 18:30 Will we survive as a species? 19:34 What conflicts do you consider most pressing? 20:50 Is there any hope? 21:08 Would you like to comment on the events in Israel right now? Lamb Börek Ingredients - 1 kg (2.2 lbs) lamb mince - 2 brown onions, diced - 4 cloves garlic, finely crushed - 60g (2 oz) currants - 100g (3.5 oz) pine nuts - 1 tbsp cumin - 1 tsp cinnamon - 1 tsp coriander powder - 1 tsp ground allspice - 1 tin crushed tomatoes - 100g (3.5 oz) yoghurt - 1 egg - 100g (3.5 oz) melted butter - 1 packet filo pastry, defrosted - 1 tbsp sesame seeds Method 1. Place a frying pan over high heat and add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Once the oil is hot, add the diced onions with a pinch of salt and sauté for 3-4 minutes until the onions start to become translucent. 2. Next, add the crushed garlic, pine nuts, currants, and all the spices. Stir well and continue to cook for another 3-4 minutes before adding the crushed tomatoes. 3. Cook this mixture for another 4 minutes, then remove from heat and set aside. 4. Place the pan back on high heat. In batches, add the lamb mince, seasoning well with salt each time. Cook until the lamb has a nice colour on the outside. Once browned, remove from the frying pan and set aside with the pine nut and onion mixture. 5. Once all the lamb is browned, mix it thoroughly with the pine nut mixture. Leave this to cool completely. 6. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). 7. In a small bowl, combine 100g (3.5 oz) of yoghurt, 1 egg, and 80g (2.8 oz) of melted butter. Use a fork to mix well. 8. Add the remaining 20g (0.7 oz) of melted butter to a clean cast-iron pan, roughly 20cm (8 inches) in diameter. 9. To assemble the börek: Take 2 sheets of filo pastry and brush the top one with the egg-yoghurt mixture. Add 1 more sheet of filo on top of the ones already covered in yoghurt, and once it’s on top, brush with the same mixture. Repeat this until you have 5 layers of filo, with the top 4 brushed with the yoghurt mixture. 10. Add a quarter of the lamb mixture to the edge closest to you, then roll it over on itself to create a sausage shape. 11. Place that “sausage” into the greased cast-iron pan, then repeat three more times until the coil completely fills the pan. 12. Brush the top with any leftover yoghurt mixture from the filo, then sprinkle the top with sesame seeds and flaky salt. 13. Place the börek into the oven for 45 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. 14. Let the börek rest for 10 minutes before removing it from the pan. Slice and serve. #cooking #lamb #shorts #shortsvideo

In this DeVane Lecture Series course, Professor David Blight examines the impact of slavery and racism on American institutions, past, present, and future.  This course works from an assumption that racial slavery was a central theme of the history of the Americas, and its many endings and legacies live with us still.  The course will pose the question “can it happen here?”  In the 1930s, the “it” was fascism.  The “it” in this case is intended to mean not only slavery and its myriad forms of enduring inequalities, but also the very existence of a pluralistic, democratic, multi-ethnic government and society rooted in the rule of law and living under a common constitution.  There have been many pivot or hinge points in American history when the nature and existence of the American experiment, as well as human freedom and rights were on the line. The course will specifically examine slavery and Yale, the Civil War, and the many legacies of that period – political, constitutional, racial, economic, and commemorative – as they have shaped American life and polity ever since. Kathleen Stock, Carol Gilligan and Michael Shermer debate the merits and pitfalls of "rationality". Is reason anything more than a rhetorical strategy? Watch the full debate at https://iai.tv/video/rationality-in-the-dock?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description Rationality has often been cited as a key factor in the uncovering of truth. But today, in a world of competing and often radically incompatible perspectives, reason has been called into question and rationality is seen as a rhetorical strategy to defend outdated views. Yet this runs the risk that there is no agreed way to test assertions. Hardly surprising perhaps that 60% of Britons now believe in conspiracy theories and some claim social cohesion itself is being undermined. Should we give up the idea that rationality helps uncover the truth? Or must we double down on reason to follow through the consequences of competing perspectives? Is reason nothing more than a pretence of objectivity, masquerading as value-free when it is in fact embedded in a given outlook? Or is rationality the primary and vital means to escape subjective chaos? #reason #rational #philosophy #neuroscience #feminism Kathleen Stock is a daring and bold philosopher famous for her gender-critical views. She is a founding faculty fellow at the University of Austin. Carol Gilligan is a groundbreaking feminist, ethicist and psychologist based at New York University. Michael Shermer is the founder of The Skeptics Society. He is best known for his searing critiques of pseudoscience and the supernatural. In 1946, a U.S. Navy seaplane crashed in Antarctica during a secret mission to claim the continent. 9 men were stranded in the world's harshest environment. Amazingly, 6 crew members survived for 13 days on the ice until a daring rescue mission eventually saved them.

Nuclear fusion is one of the most important up-and-coming technologies, and contrary to jokes, it is indeed coming closer. But how long will it take to get a nuclear fusion reactor to put power in to the grid? According to two recent reports, the technology won’t be ready until 2050, too late to contribute to our net zero goals. If you look at national strategy plans, the projections look different.
