From vinyl siding that mimics wood to fireplaces that never burn a single log, modern construction is filled with clever substitutions that provide the illusion of tradition without the cost or maintenance. But why do we accept these deceptions so easily? In this video, we explore the five key expectations—protection, health, connection, status, and control—that drive us to embrace these illusions in our homes. From the foundation to the attic, our psychological needs for security and comfort push us to prefer appearances over reality, and how construction technology has evolved to satisfy these desires without us even noticing. Whether it's decorative shutters that no longer function, or fireplaces that offer ambiance without warmth, our homes tell a story—and it’s one we’re more than happy to believe. Click to learn why we’re okay with a little architectural fakery, and how it shapes the way we live today. Patented in 1956 by Sergio Lanza, the Swift Handy Calculator (originally the Addimat / Addipresto) was a simple mechanical addition/subtraction machine using a unique ratchet-and-pawl mechanism. Due to its only being patent-protected in Italy, numerous cheaper clones of the design were produced by foreign companies under brand names such as Swift, Bentley, Schnellrechner, and Add-o-Matic. Athelhampton House was originally built in 1485, at the end of the Wars of the Roses, during the early Tudor period. The Grade II listed building features classic Tudor architecture, with its most notable element being the Great Hall, which is a fine example of 15th-century domestic architecture. The house also has Elizabethan features, such as the kitchen, which was restored to its original state from that period. Welcome to Chronicle; your home for all things medieval history! I went to California to sell my gin to Americans and dropped in on Jay Leno. He gave me a tour of his garage and I asked the vital questions - such as: “Where can I buy the best burger in LA?”, “How fast is your 1000bhp Rolls Royce?”, “Why put a helicopter engine in a motorbike?”, “Will your jet car run on my gin?”, “Will electric cars save the internal combustion engine?” and, most importantly, “Who dusts all this stuff?” Thanks again to @jaylenosgarage for showing me around. Marshall restores another vintage watch, this time it's a strange pocket watch from World War II. This watch was taken off the battlefield of WWII by the owner's father when he was serving in the US Army in Europe. It has a wild custom strap to make it wearable in combat, which is somehow still intact. This one took Marshall a very long time to complete, enjoy the journey with him! Sign up for Compounded Daily at this link: https://www.compoundeddaily.com/ Today in a podcast style episode I welcome my friend Adam Robinson who has had possibly the most interesting career of anyone I know. He was a teenage Chess prodigy who trained with Bobby Fischer as Fischer prepared to play Boris Spassky for the 1972 world championship – in what has gone on to be known as The Match of The Century. He was an undergrad at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and later earned a law degree at Oxford University. He cracked the SAT and other standardized tests launching the Princeton Review Company – which he later sold. Adam is an Artificial Intelligence pioneer, a quantitative trader, a New York Times best-selling author, and an all-round master of strategy. His company Robinson Global Strategies provides macro research to some of the world’s most successful hedge funds. Adam's newest book How Not to be Stupid is one of the very few books to be endorsed by Warren Buffett. In anticipation of the announced sequel, we continue our analysis of the recent gay romance on the international theme, "Red, White, and Royal Blue" -- this time assembling the clues to reconstruct the personalities and (often dark) psyches of the two main characters, their differing ways of showing their attraction, and the reasons both for the rupture in their relationship and for its eventual success. We consider how the story of Alex & Henry appropriates and reworks classic romantic tropes stemming from Jane Austen, and how it reflects real patterns and dilemmas in queer romance and relationships.
