The 20th century changed all that. Philosophy, with the so-called linguistic turn, came to see language as central to our understanding of reality and set out to make it precise. But a hundred years on, the project is widely seen to have run aground. Critics argue that the danger now is that because the problems of language and the world are so intractable, we have imagined they can be ignored. For how can we make sense of widely held metaphysical claims, such as the existence of parallel universes, or that we are all living in a simulation, or everything is consciousness, if we don't understand what our words mean and how, or whether, they describe reality? Should we return to the positivist notion that all general claims about the nature of reality are empty theorising and should be abandoned? Can we find an alternative account of language that will enable us to make sense of such theories? Tim Maudlin is Professor of Philosophy at NYU and Founder and Director of the John Bell Institute for the Foundations of Physics. Oxtail Grilled Cheese Serves: 4 Prep time: 30 min Cook time: 4 hours Ingredients - 1 oxtail - salt to taste - 1 carrot, chopped - 1 onion, chopped - 3 cloves garlic, crushed - 1L (34 fl oz) beef stock - 8 slices rye sourdough bread - 600g (21.2 oz) grated cheddar cheese - pickled peppers, sliced - butter - olive oil Method 1. Preheat the oven to 140°C (285°F). 2. To braise the oxtail, season it well with salt. In a large Dutch oven, heat a drizzle of oil and brown the oxtail on all sides. Remove the oxtail and set it aside. 3. In the same pot, add the chopped carrot, onion, and crushed garlic. Sauté until golden brown, then return the browned oxtail to the pot. Pour in the beef stock until the oxtail is covered. 4. Bring the pot to a gentle simmer, then cover it and place it in the oven. Braise for 3-3.5 hours, or until the meat is tender and falling off the bone. 5. Once cooked, allow the oxtail to cool slightly before pulling the meat from the bones. Glaze the meat with the reduced stock from the pot. 6. To assemble the sandwich, start by adding a generous amount of pulled oxtail meat to a slice of bread. Top with a good helping of grated cheddar cheese and some sliced pickled peppers. Place another slice of bread on top to complete the sandwich. 7. Heat a cast-iron pan over medium heat. Add about a tablespoon of butter to the pan and toast the sandwich for 5-6 minutes on each side, until it’s deep golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.

Like an actor bring words to life, we breathe life into our pieces. And we can do this in an organized way, day in and day out, reliably. Great musicians can play wonderfully in any mood. They do not rely on emotions. Instead, they create music that affects our emotions. This is a trained skill, not an inborn talent. Playing classical guitar is a long-term study. It's something we do in our homes as part of our days. We play for ourselves, for the quality it adds to life. We may enjoy playing guitar for others, but most of the time we are alone with our work. There are methods and formulas for great practice. We can use our time well so that see more progress. We can fix the problems and erase the mistakes. And we can enjoy conquering the plentiful challenges that classical guitar music offers. If you plan to play classical guitar for any length of time, it is worth it to get help. Dark energy made sense of an accelerating universe but led to the mystery of why we have no evidence for it. Is there a danger that we are making a fundamental mistake in imagining science can eradicate mystery, and do we need to think of science differently as a consequence? Do we need to abandon the idea that science has the potential to provide a complete explanation? Should we not expect science to eradicate mystery and instead simply require that its theories work well enough for our current aims and purposes?
