Since the country re-elected former Prime Minister Robert Fico at the end of September 2023, it has gone from being an absolute supporter of Ukraine to a friend of Russia. Under the pro-European government, Slovakia strongly supported #Ukraine at the beginning of the war of aggression in 2022, but even then, according to a representative survey, more than half of the Slovakian population believed that Ukraine was partly to blame for the war. Similar things are currently happening in Slovakia in terms of domestic politics. Fico's government has shut down the public broadcaster and initiated controversial judicial reforms. But with every mystery solved, a new mystery emerges. The Big Bang gave us an explanation for the expanding universe but left the mystery of how it came about. Quantum mechanics accounted for the strange behaviour of subatomic particles, but led to the puzzle of its conflict with relativity. Dark energy made sense of an accelerating universe but led to the mystery of why we have no evidence for it. Is there a danger that we are making a fundamental mistake in imagining science can eradicate mystery, and do we need to think of science differently as a consequence? Do we need to abandon the idea that science has the potential to provide a complete explanation? Should we not expect science to eradicate mystery and instead simply require that its theories work well enough for our current aims and purposes? Or is the ability to overcome mystery essential to the effective operation of science and a core idea responsible for its success? #TheoreticalPhysics #Universe #Mystery Avshalom Elitzur is a Professor in the Centre for Quantum Studies at Chapman University in the United States and is deemed by many to be an intellectual powerhouse in both the fields of physics and philosophy. Having left school at sixteen to work as a lab technician, he presented a paper on quantum mechanics at Temple University, after which he was invited to Tel Aviv University to complete his doctorate on the subject. Elitzur is best known for his work on the Elitzur–Vaidman bomb-testing problem in quantum mechanics. Claudia de Rham is a Swiss theoretical physicist working at the interface of gravity, cosmology and particle physics. She is based at Imperial College London. She was one of the UK finalists in the Physical Sciences and Engineering category of the Blavatnik Award for Young Scientists in 2018 for revitalizing the theory of massive gravity, and won the award in 2020. Since Slovakia voted former prime minister Robert Fico back into office in September 2023, the country has gone from being a 100% Ukraine supporter to a buddy of #Russia. Under the previous pro-European government, Slovakia had provided substantial support to Ukraine following the invasion in 2022 – although already back then, a survey showed that over half of the Slovakian population saw Ukraine as partly to blame for the war. Slovakia has since taken in more refugees from its neighbour than many other EU members – but has a more negative stance towards them than most of those countries. Experts say this is due to Slovakia’s cultural proximity to Russia – although also to fake news. Pro-Russia disinformation is more widespread than anywhere else in the EU. This has a polarising effect – which has in turn given PM Robert Fico a further boost. In May he was even shot in an attempted assassination, with the presumed perpetrator believed to have acted alone. In his first subsequent speech, however, Fico blamed the opposition. This can help you avoid the excess frustration and dismay that comes with shoddy practice and prolonged confusion. But playing the notes is not enough. Like an actor bring words to life, we breathe life into our pieces. And we can do this in an organized way, day in and day out, reliably. Great musicians can play wonderfully in any mood. They do not rely on emotions. Instead, they create music that affects our emotions. This is a trained skill, not an inborn talent. Playing classical guitar is a long-term study. It's something we do in our homes as part of our days. We play for ourselves, for the quality it adds to life. We may enjoy playing guitar for others, but most of the time we are alone with our work. There are methods and formulas for great practice. We can use our time well so that see more progress. We can fix the problems and erase the mistakes. And we can enjoy conquering the plentiful challenges that classical guitar music offers. If you plan to play classical guitar for any length of time, it is worth it to get help.
