Hessburg walks us through the history of the region, from the controlled fires practiced by Indigenous peoples before European settlement to present-day ecologically unsound factors including "accidental ignitions, dense forests, the wrong kinds of fuels on the ground [and] rapidly changing climate." Verbodsborden voor een deel van de automobilisten, een brug die maar in een richting gebruikt mag worden en heel veel gele strepen op het asfalt. Op en rond het kruispunt van de Marnixstraat met de Rozengracht in het centrum is het goed opletten en lang niet iedereen loopt of rijdt op de goede plek. Zo mogen automobilisten die uit de richting van de Elandsgracht komen het kruispunt niet op, maar dat gebeurt regelmatig. Google Maps geeft ook aan dat dit mag. "Ja, mijn navigatie zegt dat ik hier mag rijden. Dus dan rij ik hier." Een taxichauffeur komt er net achter dat het eigenlijk verboden is. "Dus als de politie komt, heb ik een boete." Het rijden op het kruispunt brengt ook andere risico's met zich mee, vertelt een buurtbewoner. "Ik was op de fiets en was hier aan het afslaan. En toen ben ik bijna door een taxi aangereden. Dus ja, het is echt gewoon gevaarlijk." Op een smalle brug tegenover de brandweerkazerne mag het verkeer alleen de binnenstad uit rijden. Wie juist verder de binnenstad in rijdt, komt tegenliggers tegen en dat is daarom verboden. Voetgangers mogen er zelfs helemaal niet komen. Toch wordt er hier wel veelvuldig tegen de richting in gefietst en lopen er ook voetgangers. Een Engelse toerist noemt het 'riskant', maar ze gaat toch met haar vrienden de brug op om de gracht over te steken. Alleen hulpdiensten mogen de brug gebruiken om verder het centrum in te rijden. Afgelopen Koningsdag werd de brug veelvuldig gebruikt door voetgangers en fietsers en reed een brandweerauto tijdens een spoedrit daardoor een fiets kapot. Een woordvoerder van de gemeente zegt dat er geprobeerd is om het verkeer, ondanks de werkzaamheden, met omleidingen zoveel mogelijk door te laten rijden. De gemeente ziet zelf ook dat met name fietsers die omleidingen negeren. Het punt is tijdelijk zo gemaakt voor onder meer de werkzaamheden voor het project de Oranje Loper, waarbij bijvoorbeeld bruggen vernieuwd worden. Het hele project is pas in 2028 afgerond. Volledige reactie woordvoerder gemeente "De werkzaamheden vinden plaats op een druk en complex punt in de binnenstad. We proberen met omleidingen en tijdelijke bruggen de vele fietsers, voetgangers en automobilisten zoveel mogelijk te faciliteren binnen de beperkte mogelijkheden. Wij zien helaas ook dat met name fietsers zich niet veel aantrekken van de aangegeven omleidingen. Continue handhaven is niet mogelijk omdat de inzet ook elders in de stad gevraagd wordt. De gebruikelijke gele bebording is hier aangevuld met doeken om de rijrichting te duiden voor fietsers en we werken met een dynamisch verkeerslicht in verband met nood-en hulpdiensten. I visit Peay Vineyards in Annapolis, in the northern West Sonoma Coast, to speak with co-founder Andy Peay about one of California’s most distinctive cool-climate vineyard sites. Andy explains why he and his brother Nick searched the Pacific coast for a site capable of producing transparent, site-specific wines with high acidity, restrained alcohol and more than simple fruit character. We discuss the decision to plant an isolated former sheep ranch and apple orchard just three miles from the Pacific Ocean, despite being warned that the area was too cold, wet and remote to ripen grapes successfully. Andy also explains why Peay planted Rhône varieties alongside Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and why Syrah and Viognier behave so differently in this exceptionally cool coastal climate. We explore the role of long growing seasons, rotundone and black pepper aromas in Syrah, as well as Peay’s fresh, high-acid style of Viognier. “Our Western heritage is reason—reason, analysis, action, progress!” –Settembrini the organ-grinder in Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain. HIST 271/HUMS 339: European Intellectual History since Nietzsche is a survey course designed to introduce students to the dominant trends in modern European intellectual history. The class aims to sketch a narrative arc from the late 18th century transition to modernity through the late 20th century transition to post-modernity. Following an overview of the Enlightenment and Romanticism, we move through Hegelianism and Marxism and then on to Nietzsche’s declaration of the death of God. (God had been multifunctional, fulfilling epistemological, ontological and ethical roles. His death left an enormous empty space. Much of modern thought could be described as an attempt to replace God.) Topics include Marxism-Leninism, psychoanalysis, expressionism, structuralism, phenomenology, existentialism, anti-politics, and deconstruction.
