Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe. The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Norway's fjords and fells are among the most spectacular of what Europe has to offer. In spring, herds of reindeer wander from the valleys to the plateaus. Musk oxen live at an altitude of over 1000 meters. Salmon migrate up icy streams and a surprisingly colorful underwater world hides in the depths of the fjords. The film draws an exciting portrait of Norway - the country between fjords and fells. In a recent paper, a physicist has now claimed that it's nothing to do with dark energy, it's that we are entangled with an “anti-universe.” I thought this was complete nonsense until I noticed the idea is closely related to Eric Verlinde’s emergent gravity that I was quite fond of before it basically disappeared. In this 3D animation, we explore the internal mechanism of a piezoelectric gas lighter(also known as a gas lighter). A piezoelectric gas lighter is a portable tool used to create controlled flames for various applications, such as lighting candles, gas stoves, or campfires. It operates on the principle of piezoelectricity, where an electric charge is generated by certain materials when mechanically deformed. This electric charge produces a spark that ignites the combustible gas released from the lighter. A huge thank you to all our Patreon and YouTube Membership supporters. A new theory of consciousness proposes that qualia -- for instance, the scent of a rose -- reside in quantum fields. Federico Faggin is one of the greatest luminaries of high technology alive today. A physicist by education, he is the inventor of the microprocessor and the MOS silicon gate technology, both of which underlie the modern world's entire information technology. With the knowledge and experience of a lifetime in cutting-edge fields, Federico now turns his attention to consciousness and the nature of reality, sharing with us his profound insights on the classical and quantum worlds, artificial intelligence, life and the human mind. In this discussion, he elaborates on an idealist model of reality, produced after years of careful thought and direct experience, according to which nature's most fundamental level is that of consciousness as a quantum phenomenon, while the classical physical world consists merely of evocative symbols of a deeper reality. Part 4 of how to build the Stuart Number 9 Mill Engine. This episode we establish the mounting surfaces for the bearings. These have to be very accurately machined to ensure that they are perpendicular to the cylinder. Once again it is excitement on a level rarely seen. Yes that's right, excitement is rarely seen! One good goof though.

Psychiatrist David Healy and biochemist Nick Lane debate the dangers of the medical industry - was specialisation created for profit rather than for health? This exerpt is from the debate 'Life, death and specialisation,' filmed at the HowTheLightGetsIn festival in Hay-on-Wye, Wales in May of 2023. Watch the full debate at https://iai.tv/video/life-death-and-specialisation?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description&utm_medium=head-to-head Once, the doctor would diagnose anything from a broken leg to bronchitis. Now students can choose from over 200 medical specialisations. In the past decade alone, referrals to specialists have doubled. Most see this revolution as a huge win. But is this a mistake? You are no more likely to survive in a specialist cardiac unit than you are at home. While medical errors have become the third biggest killer in the US and UK, and specialisation contributes through poor communication and incorrect diagnosis. Do we need to give up the idea that the specialist is always the best answer and redirect funding elsewhere? Is it possible that the health of the body is not divisible into separate discrete units, but needs to be seen as a whole? Or is this to undermine the radical advances specialist medicine has contributed and which will drive the breakthroughs of the future? #Medical #Specialisation #WhatIsKillingUs David Healy is a psychiatrist, scientist, author and professor of psychiatry at Bangor University in the United Kingdom. Nick Lane is a British biochemist and outstanding science communicator, asking the difficult question: what is the origin of life? He is a Professor of Evolutionary Biochemistry at University College London and a bestselling author. Financial nihilism according to Demetri represents an ideological standpoint that questions the value and legitimacy of financial systems, markets, and even the concept of money itself. It doesn’t involve a simple disregard for fundamental reality but a contempt for all fundamentals. The point of view is that the entire system is a scam, and you should thus only view financial markets and prices as a casino. The rise of meme stocks like GameStop and cryptocurrencies are symptoms of this point of view, where pumping financial products in a zero-sum game has become a style of investing for many of millennials who view it as a way to get rich in an essentially meaningless world. John Authers argued in Bloomberg that, the latest bout of speculation, and especially the extraordinary excitement at GameStop, unlike prior bubbles has a different emotional driver: anger. In today's video Patrick explores what got us here and how might this idea affect society.
