For centuries, historians focused on the famous foot soldiers of the Roman legions, but Rome’s true secret weapon on the frontier was its elite cavalry. Stretching along Hadrian’s Wall, these auxiliary horsemen enforced imperial power and controlled the wild northern tribes. In this documentary, archaeologists, historians, and modern reenactors combine cutting-edge excavations at Vindolanda and Chesters with experimental archaeology. Watch as a team of 30 riders attempts to restage a terrifying ancient Roman cavalry tournament for the first time in 1,600 years, testing authentic armor, stirrupless saddles, and deadly battle formations. It shows how uranium-235 undergoes radioactive behavior and nuclear fission, releasing energy and neutrons that can trigger a chain reaction. When a U-235 nucleus absorbs a neutron, it becomes unstable uranium-236, which splits into two fragments, emits additional neutrons, and releases energy as kinetic energy, gamma rays, and beta particles. If enough uranium is present, these neutrons can sustain further fissions, forming a chain reaction that is uncontrolled in an atomic bomb. In a nuclear reactor, the reaction is moderated by materials such as graphite that slow neutrons, and controlled by cadmium or boron rods that absorb them, allowing the reaction to remain stable at a desired level. The text also describes how reactors can produce new fissionable material, such as plutonium-239 from uranium-238, and generate radioactive products that are widely used as tracers in science and medicine. 00:00 Main titles. 0:32 — Uranium-235 is radioactive; its nucleus is in constant motion due to excess energy. 0:59 — Over time, U-235 can release energy by emitting an alpha particle, transforming into thorium-231 while conserving momentum. 1:20 — When U-235 absorbs a neutron, it becomes highly unstable uranium-236. 1:30 — Uranium-236 splits into two fragments of roughly equal mass that fly apart at high speed, releasing energy. 1:44 — Two or three neutrons are emitted during or shortly after fission. 2:00 — Fission fragments release additional energy as gamma radiation and beta particles while becoming stable. 2:26 — Each fission of U-235 emits one to three neutrons. 2:46 — If enough U-235 is present, emitted neutrons can trigger further fissions, creating a chain reaction. 3:00 — An uncontrolled chain reaction is the basis of an atomic bomb. 3:12 — In the presence of a moderator such as graphite, neutrons are slowed, making sustained reactions more likely. 3:51 — If too little uranium or moderator is present, neutrons escape and the reaction dies out. 4:08 — Above a critical size, the uranium–moderator structure sustains the reaction. 4:19 — In a nuclear reactor, moderated fission occurs in a lattice of uranium and graphite surrounded by shielding. 4:34 — Control rods made of cadmium or boron absorb neutrons to regulate the reaction. 4:48 — Withdrawing rods increases activity; inserting them deeper reduces activity. 5:07 — At an intermediate rod position, the chain reaction becomes exactly self-sustaining. 5:14 — A numerical example shows how neutron losses can balance production so the reaction remains steady. 5:49 — Further rod withdrawal increases neutron numbers exponentially, risking loss of control. 6:25 — Reinserting rods restores a stable, self-sustaining reaction at a chosen level. 7:00 — Neutron-absorbing rods allow precise control of reactor activity. 7:17 — A simple reactor (atomic pile) consists of graphite blocks with embedded uranium and movable control rods. 7:46 — Natural uranium is mostly U-238; only a small fraction is fissionable U-235. 8:00 — U-238 can absorb neutrons and decay into plutonium-239, which is itself fissionable. 8:27 — The atomic pile produces both new fissionable material and radioactive fission products. 8:38 — These products are used as tracer elements in biology, chemistry, medicine, and physics. Today, we bring you a very special 100th episode of Curator’s Corner! What makes this so special is that it was decided by you – our wonderful audience. You are the reason this series has been so successful, so it feels only right that you had the chance to decide the topic of this episode. You all came up with fantastic ideas – but it was the Amarna Letters that were one of the most requested topics, and even more requested was Irving Finkel talking about, well, pretty much anything. So, we thought we'd give you both. You deserve it. Over 3,000 years ago, the rulers of the ancient world were sending each other letters: negotiating marriages, exchanging lavish gifts, complaining about missing gold, reporting wars and, occasionally, desperately begging Egypt to send help. The Amarna Letters are an extraordinary collection of cuneiform tablets discovered at the ancient Egyptian city of Akhetaten (modern Amarna). Dating largely to the 14th century BC, they preserve diplomatic correspondence between the Egyptian pharaohs and the rules of the Late Bronze Age world. Join Irving Finkel as we explore how the Amarna Letters were discovered, why Egyptian officials were corresponding in a Mesopotamian language, and what these remarkable tablets reveal about warfare and politics in the ancient world. Turns out international diplomacy hasn't changed that much in 3,300 years. The film explores their culture, rituals, and survival in a hostile environment marked by blood feuds, witchcraft, and strict tribal customs. We see the preparation and use of deadly curare poison darts for hunting, the complex social and spiritual practices surrounding life, death, and revenge, and the dramatic headshrinking ceremonies following a raid. Despite their primitive and violent reputation, the Jivaro are shown as intelligent, resourceful people deeply connected to their environment and traditions. 0:00 — Introduction. Bill Burrud introduces the concept of a traditional missile—a poison dart used by the Jivaro Indians. 1:15 — Description of the Jivaro living in the upper Amazon of eastern Ecuador, known as headhunters. 2:00 — Penetrating the remote territory is a dangerous and rare adventure. 2:25 — The Jivaro are fiercely independent and maintain ancient customs including revenge and warfare. 3:01 — Anthropologist Bob Kaulp sets out to meet and study the Jivaro people. 3:15 — The journey begins with a plane landing on the riverbank near Jivaro territory. 4:20 — Bob faces the dangerous jungle and booby-trapped approaches to Jivaro villages. 5:24 — He is accompanied by interpreter Ricardo Rubio, who has Jivaro heritage and helps gain trust. 6:18 — Bob is accepted by the village and witnesses the making of deadly poison darts. 7:07 — Explanation of Jivaro beliefs: all living things have souls and rituals govern daily life. 7:49 — Bob observes a Jivaro hunting technique using poison darts. 8:17 — Hunting is vital for food; monkey paws are considered a delicacy. 8:45 — A death in the village triggers a ritual of anger and revenge led by the village chief. 9:43 — The women prepare chicha, a fermented ceremonial drink made from manioc root. 10:12 — Women perform the Yaka dance to promote crop fertility; men hunt and fight. 11:14 — Bob explores traditional Jivaro life involving farming, superstition, blood feuds, and rituals. 12:05 — Preparation for a feast with clan-specific body paint and tribal designs. 12:45 — The chief, also the village sorcerer, readies the tribe for the festivities. 13:15 — Musicians perform traditional Jivaromusic recorded by Bob Calp. 13:54 — Women gather staple crops like yaka; men weave cloth. 14:20 — The feast includes chicha, steamed fish, bananas, and the ceremonial pig. 15:18 — Returning warriors bring a human head as a trophy, avenging a death. 15:52 — The chief purifies warriors with sacred tobacco juice before they can eat or return home. 16:16 — The severed enemy’s head is the focus of curses and rituals to direct hatred and protect the tribe. 17:04 — The headshrinking process begins with an astringent herb solution. 17:43 — Hot ashes are used to smooth and shrink the head’s inside. 18:59 — Hot pebbles further shrink the head while warriors recount their raid stories. 19:50 — Smoke curing the head darkens and shrinks it to the size of an orange. 20:44 — The head is ritually cursed repeatedly to ensure the enemy’s spirit is powerless. 21:00 — The entire village, including children, takes part in a victory dance honoring the head. 22:25 — The head transitions from a hated enemy symbol to a tribal possession embodying power. 23:23 — Scouts and traps remain vigilant for enemy retaliation; the blood feud continues. 24:00 — Host reflects on the Jivaro's complexity: fierce warriors yet intelligent and poetic. 24:31 — Modern civilization poses a threat to their identity and survival despite potential benefits. 25:19 — Closing remarks from host Bill Bur wishing happy adventures to viewers. 26:06 — Program concludes.

Great Britain's Caves: https://youtu.be/bI8MSieksY4 With over 12,000 known caves, Slovenia has a wealth of stories from the underworld. Underworld: Slovenia is a thrilling adventure into one of the most significant ice caves in Europe. A team of expert cavers descend into Paradana, Slovenia’s largest ice cave. Using two different types of scanning technology, they measure the volume of ice, providing a baseline for scientists to measure the effects of climate change. Alongside Paradana, the film explores Slovenia’s other mysterious and varied caves. Postojnska Jama is home to a rare species of blind cave salamander. Križna Jama, a near-pristine underground system of unparalleled beauty, contains the perfectly preserved bones of cave bears - a now extinct giant that once roamed across Europe. Together, these remarkable underworlds secure Slovenia’s position as a capital of caving. -- Welcome to the official Get.factual youtube channel! 🌍 We are a documentary streaming channel covering history, science, technology, and nature. Akbar Shahid Ahmed's new book, "Crossing the Red Line," looks at how President Joe Biden and top figures in his administration supported Israel's brutal war in Gaza despite the soaring death toll and growing alarm over widespread war crimes committed by the Israeli military.

"The policies that we've seen entrenched and, frankly, worsened and become more dangerous and deadly under Donald Trump were really established by Biden's team," says Ahmed, who says there is "bipartisan continuity" on Israel-Palestine between the two presidents. Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt At the United Nations this week, President Trump repeated his attacks on the International Criminal Court and urged other nations to pull out of the global tribunal. The United States earlier this year imposed sanctions on the president of the ICC and a senior prosecutor who was part of the team that issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for crimes against humanity in Gaza, and the Trump administration is reportedly preparing more sanctions against the institution itself. Meanwhile, a coalition of nations has formed to defend international law in solidarity with the people of Palestine under the banner of the Hague Group, which was established last year by Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Honduras, Malaysia, Namibia, Senegal and South Africa. "It's an absolute low point for the sacred grounds of the United Nations that President Trump has shown up here and attacked the international legal order," says Varsha Gandikota, executive secretary of the Hague Group. We also air remarks from South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola, who spoke earlier this week at the historic Riverside Church in New York City to urge respect for international law. Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed a half-empty chamber at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, after dozens of delegations walked out in protest at the start of his speech. Netanyahu assailed his critics as "antisemites," defended his country's conduct in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and Syria, and lavished praise on President Trump for joining Israel's strikes on Iran. Daniel Levy, a former Israeli peace negotiator under Prime Ministers Ehud Barak and Yitzhak Rabin, says Israel's growing diplomatic isolation "needs to be translated into action" like sanctions, arms embargoes and other forms of accountability.
