Huerta co-founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962 and then the United Farm Workers of America, working with Cesar Chavez. From 1965 to 1970, the union organized the historic Delano grape strike, which ended in major gains for farmworkers' labor rights. In the years that followed, Huerta became heavily involved in the women's liberation and immigrant rights movements and became a major supporter of the Democratic Party. In March, _The New York Times_ published an investigation in Cesar Chavez's history of sexual abuse of women and girls in the farmworkers' movement, prompting Huerta to reveal that she, too, had been raped by Chavez. Huerta said the assaults led to the births of two of her children. Dolores Huerta appeared on _Democracy Now!_ many times over the years. We remember her legacy with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, who says, "Dolores was not only a labor organizer, a civil rights organizer, a feminist, committed, always optimistic about the possibilities of this country, but she loved life, and I want people to remember that." Last week, DeepMind research engineer Sofia Liguori announced her resignation in a letter to her colleagues titled "Stay Human." She denounced what she called "Google's complicity in the Gaza genocide" and the increasing integration of Google's technology into military and surveillance systems. "I felt I could not, in good faith, send this message of building AI to benefit humanity while ignoring that our company was complicit in a genocide," Liguori tells _Democracy Now!_ "The problem is that when the focus is on the model capabilities and on the potential for agents 'going rogue,' we are shifting the attention from a specific human choice … which is this unrestrained, unregulated integration of the systems without red lines." China bedrijft namelijk panda-diplomatie: het leent exemplaren van de inheemse berensoort uit landen overal ter wereld. Die zijn daar blij mee, want het laat de dierentuinkassa’s flink rinkelen. I-Police, het geflopte digitaliseringsproject van de politie, heeft 139,4 miljoen euro belastinggeld gekost. Dat is bijna dubbel zoveel als de 76 miljoen euro waarvan tot nu toe sprake was, blijkt uit een rapport van het Rekenhof. Volgens het rapport zijn miljoenen gespendeerd aan onbruikbare softwarelicenties en is de overheid structureel afhankelijk van externe consultants. De politie kocht voor 30 miljoen euro aan softwarelicenties, maar 21,6 miljoen euro (70 procent) daarvan heeft geen enkel nut meer. De politie en de overheid zijn volgens het Rekenhof structureel afhankelijk van externe consultants voor kritieke IT-functies. Het Rekenhof vraagt om meer interne expertise. Doordat er in 2025 nog steeds geen "tastbaar" resultaat was, trok minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Bernard Quintin (MR) er de stekker uit. In de Kamercommissie Binnenlandse Zaken begin dit jaar moest Quintin toegeven dat er inmiddels 75,8 miljoen euro aan belastinggeld was besteed aan het geflopte project. De Kamerleden die de vragen afvuurden, vermoedden toen al dat het bedrag in werkelijkheid een pak hoger zou liggen. Op vraag van het Parlement lichtte het Rekenhof het volledige i-Police-project door. Uit dat rapport, dat vanmorgen werd gepubliceerd , blijkt dat er 139,4 miljoen euro werd gebruikt voor i-Police. Dat is bijna dubbel zoveel als het bedrag waarvan eerst sprake was. "Voor 21,6 miljoen euro aan licenties (70 procent) hebben vandaag geen enkel nut meer voor de politie: 7,3 miljoen euro aan licenties werd nooit gebruikt. 14,2 miljoen euro werd gebruikt tijdens de ontwikkelingsfase, maar door de stopzetting van het project zijn de licenties onbruikbaar", luidt het rapport. De analyses die de politie uitvoerde, wezen op een groot financieel risico Rekenhof "De analyses die de politie in 2024 en 2025 uitvoerde, wezen op een groot financieel risico aangaande de licenties", klinkt het verder. "De kosten beperken zich immers niet tot de initiële aankoop, want de kosten voor onderhoud, ondersteuning en vernieuwing beslaan verschillende jaren." "Die kosten kunnen problematisch worden als de betrokken oplossingen niet worden uitgerold, slechts deels worden gebruikt of als de toekomst van het project waar ze bij horen, onzeker is." 'Quick wins' Verder belicht het rapport het bestaan van 2 zogenoemde 'quick wins', mijlpalen die binnen de 12 tot 18 maanden na de start van het project klaar moesten zijn als proefprojecten. Werden die 'quick wins' niet gerealiseerd, dan kon de politie het programma stopzetten. Het Rekenhof wijst erop dat er geen duidelijke mijlpalen werden gedefinieerd en dat de politie al voor tientallen miljoenen euro's aan vervolgprojecten had besteld, nog voor de proefprojecten waren afgelopen en geëvalueerd. "Het Rekenhof is bijgevolg van oordeel dat de politie een grote hefboom verloor om van de dienstverlener conforme resultaten te eisen", klinkt het. Structureel afhankelijk van consultants Een derde groot punt gaat over de inzet van consultants. Volgens het Rekenhof is de politie – en dus de overheid – structureel afhankelijk van externe consultants voor kritieke IT-functies. Het rapport stelt dat "de aanwervingsvoorwaarden van de politie niet geschikt waren om gespecialiseerde en hoog opgeleide profielen te rekruteren". "De aanwervingen werden nog extra bemoeilijkt door de schaarste aan IT-profielen op de arbeidsmarkt en hun hoge loonverwachtingen." Ook in het vernietigende rapport over de digitalisering binnen Justitie vorig jaar stelde het Rekenhof het overmatig gebruik van consultants aan de kaak. Omdat er te weinig interne expertise was, werd er "massaal" een beroep gedaan op externe consultants, klonk het toen. Volgens het Rekenhof werden die consultants bovendien te weinig gecontroleerd. 42 buitenlanders betrokken bij treinramp, een van hen overleden Het Spaanse ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken heeft gemeld dat er ten minste 42 buitenlandse burgers van 7 verschillende nationaliteiten betrokken zijn bij het treinongeluk in Urda. Buitenlandse Zaken in België heeft geen indicaties over Belgische slachtoffers. Er is 1 Argentijnse staatsburger overleden. Volgens het Spaanse ministerie zijn er ook 10 buitenlanders die ongedeerd zouden zijn gebleven, 7 gewonden en 24 van wie de toestand op dit moment onbekend is. De Zuid-Koreaanse president heeft bevestigd dat er onder de passagiers Zuid-Koreaanse burgers waren die gewond zijn geraakt. De Japanse premier heeft gemeld dat de Spaanse regering heeft laten weten dat 2 Japanse burgers op de passagierslijst van de betrokken treinen staan, zonder daarbij hun toestand te specificeren. Ook de Italiaanse autoriteiten hebben gemeld dat 3 van de in totaal 9 Italiaanse staatsburgers die aan boord van de treinen reisden en in Spanje wonen, als vermist worden beschouwd. In totaal zijn er 5 ongedeerd gebleven en maken het goed, terwijl een andere gewond is geraakt en in het ziekenhuis is opgenomen. De Filipijnse ambassade heeft gemeld dat er 1 Filipijnse staatsburger is die lichtgewond is geraakt en naar het ziekenhuis is overgebracht. Jetten beloofde hem 500 miljoen aan extra winterhulp.  Opvallend genoeg was minister Sjoerdsma van Ontwikkelingshulp en handel op hetzelfde moment juist in Kiev om te praten over de al eerder beloofde 1,2 miljard aan niet-militaire steun.
