A group of scientists just created a new camera to help us see how animals see - and it’s so cool. Here's how it works and why it matters... You and I see color because of special cells in the back of our eyes called photoreceptors. But we can only see this tiny chunk of the electromagnetic spectrum that we call "visible light." Other animals have different photoreceptors, and can see more of it. We know that some birds and bees can see infrared light UV light - which means the sky looks very different to a bird! And sunscreen looks white to us because we see it reflect visible light, but it absorbs ultraviolet light, so it would look very different to a bee. Besides just being fascinating, this is one more way we can better understand the world. And it’s a reminder of how many ways there are to look at things :) If you like optimistic science and tech stories, follow for more! #shorts #sciencefacts #science #technology #animation #animals

How can smart defence strategies and multilateral diplomacy avoid a US-China war in Asia - for example over Taiwan? Join me at https://jeffrich.substack.com for 👇 * My guide to the Real History of the Post-1945 world * Weekly world history book recommendations (USA, China, India, Europe & Russia in 2025) * My guide to geopolitics and history, "Imagine being a Foreign Minister" Have American and Australian advocates of war with China over Taiwan really thought about the realities of a war with China? How should middle powers - like Australia, Indonesia and the ASEAN nations - adapt their defence and foreign policies to the new realities of war, Asian strengths and US power today? My conversation with Sam Roggeveen about his book The Echidna Strategy: Australia's Search for Power and Peace (https://amzn.to/49X82B3) asked these fundamental questions that concern everyone around the world. What would a war with China really be like, and how can defence - the echidna strategy - and some creative diplomacy avoid a US-China war in Asia. Our conversation covered Australian defence and foreign policy, AUKUS and nuclear submarines, the upcoming Australia-ASEAN meeting in Melbourne (March 2024), China, Indonesia, regional order in Asia and the West Pacific, lessons of the Ukraine war, & the USA. Is the USA becoming just a normal great power, and what does that mean for other countries all around the world? Ultra-processed food is taking over the grocery store, and it’s not just junk food either. A new article suggests some of the issues with these foods come from the fact that they’re ‘predigested’ - and we’re all eating a lot more of it than we think. ⭐️ MY BEHAVIOR CHANGE COURSE IS OPEN FOR ENROLLMENT ⭐️ Learn the skill of change, break bad habits and gain control of your life: https://kdocherty.com/how-to-change?cam=video84 We all already know that junk food and fast food is addictive and unhealthy for us, but ultra-processed food is causing a lot of problems with our health, our weight and more. This might be the reason why. In this video we're going to cover the Levels of Processing as seen in the NOVA Classification, we'll illustrate the difference between food and ultra-processed food using an apple and an apple pie from Mcdonalds, we'll learn about starch slurries and how food manufacturers are breaking foods down to their molecular parts before reassembling them into whatever 'food' they can think of. We'll also take a look at one of the worst offenders, Pringles, and discuss the difference between potato chips and whatever this is. 0:00 - Junk Food is worse than you thought 1:56 - What is Ultra-Processed Food? 2:44 - Levels of Processing (Apple vs. McDonald's Apple Pie) 5:08 - Slurries 6:08 - "Food" vs. Food 8:45 - Bypassing the Digestive System 10:00 - Edible Food-Like Products 11:00 - Ultra-Processed Food is Taking Over 12:39 - Ultra-Processed Diet Study 14:08 - More Than Obesity 15:30 - Quality vs. Profit Some Sources: https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/01/health/predigested-food-wellness/index.html https://foodtank.com/news/2022/11/database-indicates-u-s-food-supply-is-73-percent-ultra-processed/ https://www.cell.com/cell-metabolism/fulltext/S1550-4131(19)30248-7 *~*~* ✉️ Send me a Video Suggestion! ✉️ https://geni.us/video-suggestions 💬 Join me on Discord! 💬 https://geni.us/join-our-discord 👀 Check out our subreddit! 👀 https://www.reddit.com/r/KianaDocherty/ ⭐️ GET MY GUIDE! ⭐️ How to Change: A Guide to Breaking Bad Habits and Getting Motivated https://kdocherty.com/how-to-change?cam=video84 🤓 MY RECOMMENDED BOOK LIST 🤓 https://geni.us/kiana-book-list 💖 FOLLOW ME! 💖 IG: https://www.instagram.com/kianadocherty/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@kianadocherty Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/KianaDocherty/

Rice crispy treats Ingredients - 85g (3 oz) unsalted butter - 2 x 280g (2 x 10 oz) packets of marshmallows - 150g (5.3 oz) Rice Bubbles (or Rice Krispies) Method 1. Combine the butter and marshmallows in a pot. Melt them together over a medium-low heat, ensuring they melt smoothly without bubbling up. The goal is to avoid caramelising the marshmallows. 2. Once melted, turn off the heat. Add the Rice Bubbles to the pot, stirring thoroughly to evenly coat them in the sticky marshmallow and butter mixture. 3. Prepare an oven tray by lining it with greaseproof paper. Carefully transfer the Rice Bubble mixture to the tray. Firmly press the mixture into all corners of the tray. Then, cover the top with another sheet of greaseproof paper. Place a second baking tray on top and weigh it down with some kitchen weights, such as canned food or a bottle of water. 4. Allow the crispy treats to set for two hours. After setting, cut them into squares. For an extra bit of fun, you might try constructing an igloo out of the squares, just as suggested. Enjoy your creation! #shortsvideo #shorts #howto #foryou #cooking #food #viral

Ivan the Terrible, the first Tsar of Russia, was known for his cruelty and sadism, but legend suggests he possessed a secret library hidden beneath the Kremlin, containing priceless ancient literature. In the 20th century, an archaeologist embarked on a quest to prove the existence of Ivan's library, facing dangers from both Stalin's secret police and the treacherous tunnels beneath Moscow. Ivan's paranoia led him to kill anyone who knew of the library's location, and by the 20th century, most believed it to be merely a legend until Stetsy's determined pursuit. You might think the evidence is overwhelming. But in a new paper, physicists have shown that Einstein's theory of space-time allows another option, it's that black holes might be layers of shells with dark energy inside. Addy Pross, Kate Adamala and Chrisantha Fernando battle it out over the origins of life. This is an excerpt from the debate ‘The origin of life,' filmed in September 2023 at the HowTheLightGetsIn festival in London. Watch the full debate at https://iai.tv/video/the-origin-of-life?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description&utm_campaign=head-to-head Humans have always marvelled at the wonders of life. But for nearly a century science has had an explanation for the immense variety of life forms on earth. Out of a primordial soup a random combination of chemicals generated the building blocks of life. Evolution did the rest. But might this account be mistaken? Despite decades of effort, biologists and biochemists have been unable to evolve living things from inorganic material. The emergence of the first cell and the development of complex life remain a mystery. Is there something about the origin of life that means it will never be uncovered? Is the failure to account for life a threat to the whole evolutionary story? Or might we be able at some point to demonstrate the evolution of cells from inorganic material and the subsequent development of complex life forms? And if so where might this solution be found? #TheOriginOfLife #CreationMyth #Evolution Addy Pross is Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at Ben Gurion University of the Negev. His research interests lie in the physics-chemistry-biology relationship and the origin of life. His pioneering book ‘What Is Life? How Chemistry Becomes Biology’ has been published nearly a dozen languages. Katarzyna (Kate) Adamala is a pioneering synthetic biologist and genetics professor at the University of Minnesota. Her groundbreaking work spans the realms of astrobiology, synthetic cell engineering, and biocomputing. Chrisantha Fernando is a multifaceted scientist who began his journey in medicine at Oxford and transitioned into AI research. He earned an MSc in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems at Sussex, followed by a PhD in simulating the origin of life with Eors Szathmary. Currently at DeepMind, he specializes in the intersection of evolution and learning in AI, with a particular interest in open-ended evolution. The Institute of Art and Ideas features videos and articles from cutting edge thinkers discussing the ideas that are shaping the world, from metaphysics to string theory, technology to democracy, aesthetics to genetics.
