She was 55 years old. As a professor of history at Baruch College and the CUNY Graduate Center, Fernández was a leading scholar of the Young Lords, the radical 1960s civil rights organization founded in Chicago and New York and modeled on the Black Panthers. Fernández also created the Latinx Freedom Movement Archive and Exhibition Project, alongside historian Felipe Hinojosa. The exhibition is currently on view at The Shed in New York City, as well as in Chicago and Los Angeles. Iterations will also be presented in Houston and Washington, D.C. Blanche gave written assurances that a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” designed to pay Trump allies would not be resurrected, and that a settlement between Trump and the Internal Revenue Service only gave the president retroactive immunity from audits rather than perpetual protection. The Senate Judiciary Committee votes on Blanche’s nomination Tuesday, with the full Senate expected to vote later in the week. Blanche, President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney and acting attorney general since April, has been central in many of the administration’s most controversial episodes, including prosecutions of Trump opponents and the botched rollout of files related to Jeffrey Epstein. If confirmed, Blanche would entrench a culture of corruption at the Justice Department, warns legal expert Norm Eisen. “There have been a series of offenses against the rule of law, miscarriages of justice,” he tells Democracy Now! Eisen is co-founder and executive chair of Democracy Defenders Fund. He previously served as White House special counsel for ethics and government reform in the Obama administration. The Justice Department recently dropped charges against his client, former Olympic athlete Davey Hearn, who had been accused of vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. In this video I look at whether that comparison holds up. It doesn't: unlike Enron, this debt isn't concealed through fraud — it's disclosed in the footnotes, it breaks no accounting rules, and much of what is going on is perfectly ordinary. But that raises a more interesting question than "will they get caught." If the aggressive stuff — the adjusted earnings, the leases, the stock-based compensation added back — is all sitting there in plain sight, does dressing up the numbers actually fool anyone? Drawing on the work of Aswath Damodaran, Richard Sloan, Robert Bloomfield and others, I dig into what the research says about whether markets reward clean accounting or aggressive accounting, why the debt isn't hidden so much as filed somewhere too tedious for most people to read — and why the real risk in the AI boom probably isn't the borrowing at all, but the enormous revenue it's all assuming will show up. Ingredients 300g red chillies, 3 cloves garlic, chopped ¼ tsp black peppercorns 1 tsp sea salt 1 cup (250ml) apple cider vinegar 1 cup (250ml) water Directions Stem and deseed chillies, then chop roughly (keep seeds if you like more heat). Place in a saucepan with garlic, peppercorns, salt and vinegar. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Add water, return to a simmer, cover and cook for a further 10 minutes. Transfer mixture to a blender and puree until smooth. Pour into a sterilised bottle or jar and allow to cool, then keep refrigerated.
