Ruim 1.300 kinderen hebben vandaag kunnen sporten in het Olympisch Stadion tijdens de open dag van de Johan Cruyff Foundation. De stichting heeft al bijna 30 jaar als doel kinderen, waaronder ook kinderen met een handicap, de mogelijkheid te bieden te kunnen sporten. Aan de hand van grote namen uit de sportwereld is er voor de deelnemende kinderen een grote variatie aan sporten uit te proberen vandaag. De Johan Cruyff Foundation heeft 30 sporten die de deelnemers kunnen uitproberen en zo is het Olympisch Stadion voor de 26e keer een groot sportfestijn. "Het is leuk dat er allemaal sporten zijn, ook voor kinderen zoals ik, in een rolstoel", vertelt Sem. Onder toeziend oog van Edwin van der Sar, Frank Rijkaard, Esther Vergeer en nog vele andere ambassadeurs van de foundation, proberen de kinderen allerlei sporten uit. "We hebben getennist, met een rolstoel en een bal en we hebben hockey gedaan", sommen vrienden Tomas en Jim op. "Dat was heel leuk." Dat je als ambassadeur niet per definitie een Champions League-overwinning op je naam hoeft te hebben staan, bewijst Jordanees en zanger Billy Dans. Hij stond op het podium om de sfeer erin te brengen en dat deed hij met veel plezier. "Al die blije kinderen, leuke glimlachjes en ouders die je heel gelukkig ziet", somt de zanger op. "Daar doe je het voor. Ik kan hier de hele dag blijven staan." Eén van de ambassadeurs is oud-volleyballer Celeste Plak, die daar ook al rondliep als 14-jarige student van het Johan Cruijff College. "Daar is mijn liefde voor vrijwilligerswerk geboren", legt ze uit. "Om te zien hoe kinderen soms timide en onzeker binnenkomen en toch vertrouwen krijgen. Dat ze wel die bal kunnen vangen of wel snappen hoe een spel werkt. When we first meet Mustafa, there are only a few weeks left until the state election in Saxony-Anhalt. He is a candidate for The Left (Die Linke), which, alongside the AfD, is one of the most popular parties among young people in Germany. The entire country was talking about this election after the right-wing extremist party AfD won just shy of 44 percent - the largest share by a wide margin. This was the strongest result for a far-right party in Germany since the second world war. Het gaat om ontwikkelingshulp voor langere termijn, zoals programma’s voor onderwijs, waterbeheer, landbouw- en gezondheidszorg. Levensreddende hulp, zoals voedsel, medicijnen en noodopvang, krijgt prioriteit. Dit zegt Partos, de brancheverenging voor ontwikkelingssamenwerking, tegen Zembla. Een kwart van het wereldwijde budget voor ontwikkelingswerk is vorig jaar verdwenen. Deze enorme krimp komt vooral door de ontmanteling van de grootste hulporganisatie ter wereld USAID door president Trump. Maar ook Europese landen, waaronder Nederland, bezuinigen op ontwikkelingswerk. Zeventig jaar na de mijnramp van Marcinelle op 8 augustus 1956 reist VRT NWS-journalist en Italië-kenner Willem Van Mullem naar Manoppello, het thuisstadje van 22 van de 136 omgekomen Italiaanse mijnwerkers. Hij ontdekt er hoe de zwartste bladzijde uit de Italiaanse migratiegeschiedenis nog altijd doorleeft. Hij trekt ook verder het land in om te peilen welke rol migratie vandaag speelt in het Italië van Giorgia Meloni. Want tegenwoordig is Italië vooral een land van aankomst: de poort naar Europa voor mensen op zoek naar een beter leven. In Manoppello wordt Willem ontvangen door Antonio, een Belgische Italiaan die jarenlang in de mijn van Beringen werkte en na zijn pensioen terugkeerde naar zijn roots. Vandaag is Antonio nauw betrokken bij de herdenkingsweek van de mijnramp en kent er iedereen. Willem spreekt er met kinderen van de slachtoffers over wat ze nog weten over de ramp, over België, en over hoe die geschiedenis hun leven tekende. Zo ontmoet hij er de zussen Iezzi, wiens vader omkwam in de mijn. Willem trekt naar Borgo Mezzanone, de grootste baraccopoli of bidonville van Europa. In dit geïmproviseerde dorp leven meer dan 5.000 arbeidsmigranten, voornamelijk uit Afrika, in penibele en gevaarlijke omstandigheden. Willem ontmoet er clandestiene arbeiders die voor dag en dauw naar de omliggende velden trekken om in de volle zon tomaten, courgettes of meloenen te plukken. In het noorden van Italië ligt het havenstadje Monfalcone, thuishaven van Europa's grootste scheepswerf en bouwer van cruiseschepen, Fincantieri, een motor van de Italiaanse industrie. Een kwart van alle arbeiders die voor Fincantieri en alle toeleveranciers werken, zijn Bengalezen. Ze werden op vraag van de bedrijven zelf uit Bangladesh naar Italië gehaald. Intussen is een derde van de 30.000 inwoners in Monfalcone van buitenlandse afkomst. En daar is niet iedereen even gelukkig mee. In the wake of devastating flash floods triggered by glacial collapse in the Himalayas, Nepal is demanding climate reparations from polluter countries as it embarks upon the grueling process of rebuilding. Over 1,400 bodies have been recovered from the disaster, with around 6,000 others still missing. Nepal’s government estimates that the cost of infrastructure reconstruction is likely to exceed $4 billion. Nepal, a mountainous country surrounded by glaciers, continues to be vulnerable to the effects of climate change, despite contributing less than 0.1% of global carbon emissions. Recent studies estimate that global surface temperatures will likely exceed 1.5°C above preindustrial levels by the end of the decade, threatening additional glacier melts and more deadly disasters.
