Avshalom Elitzur, Michio Kaku, Tim Maudlin and Jimena Canales thrash out the implications of what current physics says about the nature of time. Does time really flow in the way we think it does? Watch the full debate at https://iai.tv/video/the-trouble-with-time?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description In our everyday experience, time is an inescapable backdrop against which events unfold, allowing us to sequence events and measure durations. Yet in the hundred years since Einstein's theory of general relativity, physics has had a radically different account. Time does not flow, there is no before and after. We are not born and we do not die. The entirety of spacetime is given at the outset of the universe. There is no cause and effect. Is this radical discrepancy with our everyday experience a threat to physics or a threat to our understanding of what it is to be alive? Should we take seriously claims of physicists that everyday experience is an illusion? Or is it their model of the universe that is mistaken? Or are these two profoundly different accounts of time the product of frames of understanding that will always remain incompatible? #michiokaku #time #physics Quantum theorist Avshalom Elitzur, theoretical physicist Michio Kaku, philosopher of physics Tim Maudlin, and historian of science Jimena Canales delve into the fascinating conundrum of time. A new study by a group of British geologists suggests that a huge tsunami devastated the populations of Stone Age Britain, about 8200 years ago. With Europe facing challenges from the ongoing genocide in Gaza, to climate change and geopolitical tensions, the role of Germany has never been more pivotal. Developed in the 1870s, the Hectograph (also spelled Hektograph) was an early document copying process which used a tray of gelatine to transfer ink from a master sheet onto copy pages. Extremely simple and easy to construct under primitive conditions, they were extensively used by underground political groups and prisoners of war to secretly print documents. In April 1066, Haley's Comet caused panic across Europe. Many feared the world was ending. Within six months, two powerful monarchs in Western Europe were slain, leading to William the Conqueror's rise in England and the end of the Anglo-Saxon way of life. William's rule in England involved building castles, suppressing rebellions, and implementing the Domesday Book in 1085 for a thorough land survey. William's remorseful reflections on his actions in England as expressed in later accounts. Welcome to Chronicle; your home for all things medieval history! Elon Musk says his company Neuralink just implanted its first brain chip into a human. Here’s how this works and why it matters: Neuralink is working on brain-computer interfaces to try to let people control a computer with just their thoughts. They’re calling this first product “Telepathy” which… fits. The actual implant is a small electronic chip with sensors that can detect brain signals and then wirelessly send them to an app, which decodes them into actions. They first controversially tested this on monkeys, and then back in September, the FDA approved Neuralink for its first human trials. This first human test is just to evaluate the safety of the implant and surgical robot. There are very few details so far, but Musk says that the implant is detecting neuron spikes - meaning it’s reading the electrical and chemical signals sent by the brain, which seems promising! That’s because it could be what’s called “false” vacuum. A false vacuum can remain in this innocent reliable looking form for billions of years, but eventually a quantum fluctuation could be enough to cause it to decay. This would release enormous amounts of energy and kill all of us. Yes, cheerful thought. So far, this has all been theory. But a new experiment has now for the first time observed that quantum fluctuations can actually trigger a transition like that, luckily not for the entire universe, but for a small and safe test-setting in the laboratory with ultracold gases. Ever heard of double lydian? What about Double Phrygian? Double Dorian? In this video we explore microtonal modes, and their "double mode" extensions through a curious defect in an old baby piano. Through tuning theory and the magic of 31 EDO we will bend the fabric of harmony as we know it, and see just how far we can push the envelope of microtonal music theory with 31 notes. Babe wake up, new music theory just dropped! Do yourself a favor, check out Zheanna Erose's incredible channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ZheannaErose https://twitter.com/iamzheanna Support me on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/LeviMcClain Connect with me here: Levi McClain's Music: https://linktr.ee/levimcclainmusic Levi McClain's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/levimcclainmusic Levi McClain's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@levimcclainmusic A quick note on "out of tune" & how we describe music we don't like: I often read the comment "it just sounds out of tune". I think a lot of musicians and creators working in the microtonal space hear that frequently. More often than not I take that as a substitute for saying "this does not sound good". That is fair. Microtones, Xenharmonics, or just about anything not in 12 can be jarring to the ears upon first listen. If it's not your cup of tea, its not your cup of tea. The wording of that comment however, has always bothered me. It presupposes 12 tone equal temperament as being the "superior" tuning system. Ubiquity does not imply superiority. On a technical level, when microtonalists hear "it sounds out of tune" we chuckle to ourselves, because, we have the insider knowledge to know better. It's not in 12, yes. That does not mean its not in tune. We are just calibrated to a different tuning system, and therefore don't feel the need to necessarily judge the music to a 12 TET standard. This might just be a minor distinction in the macro. Language after all is fluid, constantly flowing from one kind of colloquialism to the next, why scrutinize such a casual saying like "it sounds out of tune"? The language that we use matters. Every time we groan that microtonal music is "just out of tune" we entrench ourselves deeper into the idea that 12 tone equal temperament is the absolute standard, and that everything that falls short of it is bad. Don't get me wrong, there IS bad microtonal music. Just like there is BAD 12 TET music, but that's not the point. Out of tune means something very specific: You have fallen outside the bounds of expectation in terms of the overall pitch content in your music. The expectation part is important. A wise man once said "don't judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree". When we place those kinds of expectations on the fish it becomes harder and harder to see the fish for all the things its incredibly good at. If I'd have picked up this baby piano and said to myself "Yikes, its just out of tune!" that probably would have been the end of it. I'd set it down and have been on my way. No digitized tuning, no double mode shenanigans, no really unique music. I would have considered that a shame. Would you? Timestamps: 00:00 - It's in A... [Audio Lecture] Unlocked after 1 year for patrons only: In the second half of the nineteenth century, many of the most brilliant and ambitious minds in both Europe and America were bent upon solving the problem of capturing sound waves from the air and playing them back. Most of their efforts, including the earliest "phonautograms" from more than a decade before Edison's invention of the phonograph, were either forgotten or lost to decay and degradation. In the past fifteen years, however, scientists and engineers, including the First Sounds collective, have located the surviving remnants of early sound recordings and devised ways to optically scan them and reproduce the sounds that they captured, revealing much of the auditory world of the nineteenth century and the pathways by which the now-ubiquitous technology of audio recording came into being. Special thanks to the First Sounds collective, for recovering long-lost audio recordings and sharing their files freely with the global public, at www.firstsounds.org. All audio files used in this lecture are courtesy of First Sounds, except for the Edison/Wangemann cylinder recording from 1889, which is courtesy of the National Park Service and the Cylinder Archive. This video is especially useful for those studying for wine qualifications such as WSET 3, as it focuses on a crucial aspect of wine tasting - judging the quality of wine. In this episode, I dive into the 'Conclusions' part of the wine tasting process, utilizing the WSET's Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT). You'll learn how to critically assess a wine's quality level, which is an essential skill for anyone aspiring to deepen their understanding of wine. Join me as I explain the BLIC method - Balance, Length, Intensity, and Complexity - and how these components contribute to determining a wine's quality. Whether you're a seasoned wine professional or just starting your wine journey, this insight is invaluable. We'll also discuss the criteria for categorizing wines as 'outstanding,' 'very good,' 'good,' and 'acceptable,' and what makes a wine fall into each of these categories. By understanding these concepts, you'll enhance your ability to appreciate and evaluate wines more effectively. Remember, this video is part one of a series. The second part, focusing on the 'Readiness for Drinking,' is available exclusively to subscribers of my e-learning platform. For more details, visit winewithjimmy.com. If you have any comments or questions about wine tasting, the BLIC method, or wine quality assessment, feel free to drop them below. And if you ever find yourself in the UK, I'd love to see you for a class, a glass, or even a bottle. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and click the notification bell for biweekly updates from the channel. Thanks for watching, and I'll see you in the next video! #WineTasting #WineEducation #WSET #WineQuality #BLICMethod #LearnWine
Japan just landed on the moon!!! But now, the spacecraft is upside down. Here's what's happening and why it matters. This is a huge deal, not only because it makes Japan the fifth nation to successfully soft-land a spacecraft on the moon, but also because they accomplished a very accurate landing, just 55 meters from target - which is WAY more precise than most spacecraft aim for. But not everything went as planned upon landing. But one of its main engines not lost thrust at the end and it tumbled, which means its solar panels are facing the wrong way and won’t be able to generate electricity. It could recharge as the sun moves, but for now, Japan has unlocking a new era of more targeted exploration on the moon and, hopefully, beyond! Marshall restores a vintage Tudor Oyster Prince 34 watch from the 1950s! Tudor is a sub-brand of Rolex, and it often has similar quality for a cheaper price, but it's also been around for a long time and has quite a pedigree itself! This watch features an early automatic rotor winding system, and was listed as "ticking" on the eBay auction.
