The Galilean Thermometer uses the movement of glass balls of differing densities inside a fluid column to measure temperature. Despite its name, however, this instrument was not invented by Galileo Galilei but rather a group of his former students decades after his deaths. Nor was it widely used after its creation, only being resurrected as a museum gift shop product in the 1990s. Tommy Curry, Suchitra Sebastian and Rupert Sheldrake discuss the limits of knowledge. Watch the full debate at https://iai.tv/video/after-knowledge?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description The acquisition of knowledge has been a central factor driving advance. And since Descartes, Western thought has placed the question of what we know, and how we know what we know, at the centre of philosophy. But might this focus on knowledge be a mistake? Feminist and postmodernist critics argue that in seeking to validate knowledge philosophers have merely sought to justify their own interests and prejudices. Instead they argue all knowledge is limited by perspective, whether by culture, class, gender, race or the many other factors that influence understanding. Should we give up the idea that our beliefs can provide us with objective knowledge? Should we reject epistemology as an attempt to elevate and make undeniable our particular perspective, interests and prejudices and focus instead on the consequences of adopting a given framework of belief? Or is knowledge essential to culture, and the notion that beliefs might be definitively true vital to progress? #knowledge #epistemology #philosophyofscience Philosopher of race Tommy Curry, theoretical physicist Suchitra Sebastian and outspoken scientist Rupert Sheldrake debate the limits of what we can know. Hosted by Joanna Kavenna. 00:00 Introduction 00:57 Suchitra Sebastian: quantum emergence 05:30 Tommy Curry: objectivity vs humility 08:54 Rupert Sheldrake: the dictatorship of mechanistic materialism The Institute of Art and Ideas features videos and articles from cutting edge thinkers discussing the ideas that are shaping the world, from metaphysics to string theory, technology to democracy, aesthetics to genetics. Southworth Duplex Boiler Feed Pump Service - Part #4. There is a problem with the Water Chest O Ring seals. This is due to the Cylinder Cover Gland being too deep. While dismantling these parts I saw Graphited Yarn fitted to make up the difference in the Gland hole depth. Normally I would fit more Grapited Yarn in this area but fitting two O Rings in each Gland seemed to be a better option. https://www.patreon.com/keithappleton IF YOU ENJOY WATCHING THESE DETAILED TUTORIAL VIDEOS THAT I PRODUCE TO HELP BEGINNERS TO THE HOBBY, THEN PLEASE BECOME A PATRON OF MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL VIA "PATREON" AND ALLOW ME THE TIME TO MAKE EVEN MORE OF THESE SPECIALIST AND HIGHLY DETAILED TUTORIAL VIDEOS. How LOUD is a sonic boom from a supersonic plane? 20 years ago, when the famous Concorde stopped flying, the answer was close to a balloon popping right next to you or just above nearby thunder. But now NASA is building a new, hopefully much quieter supersonic plane. That matters, because sonic booms were a big part of why supersonic planes were banned over many countries - and why you can’t fly supersonic today. If NASA succeeds, they could help bring back supersonic flight, and allow you and me to fly faster than sound. We got to go see NASA’s new plane, so if you’re curious, go watch our longer episode! This video is part of our show Huge If True. If you like optimistic science and tech stories, subscribe for more. #plane #airplane #supersonic #concorde #NASA #stem #science #animation

Anders Hofman attempts to become the first-ever human to complete a long-distance triathlon in Antarctica (3.8 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km run), “the Iceman”, to show that limitations are perceptions. In this death-defying journey, we witness how Anders conquers his fears, doubts, and adversities as he risks everything in one of the most extreme athletic feats ever attempted. It’s a triumph of human potential and spirit, showing that we all can achieve anything we set our minds to. In the age of absolutism, France had towered over European life and politics -- the only nation that was a major land power on the Continent and a colonial metropole with an overseas empire at the same time. Yet by 1900, tossed about by repeated revolutions and coups and torn asunder by often petty internal culture wars, France was falling behind its rivals to become almost a second-rate power. Once the Radical Party rode the Dreyfus Affair into government, they had to rush to reposition France to try to take advantage of the tensions and instability in the Balkans, and prepare the nation to possibly face off once more against their archrival across the Rhine -- Germany. Daniel Markovits, Martin Wolf and Madeleine Pennington rethink fundamental principles in economics. What is the meaning of productivity today? Watch the full debate at https://iai.tv/video/the-economics-of-almost-everything?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=description "Productivity isn't everything, but in the long run, it is almost everything" claimed Paul Krugman. Throughout the twentieth century productivity, the average level of output for each hour worked, improved dramatically across the developed world. A greater increase than in the previous 2000 years. Driven by life changing technologies, such as electricity, combustion engines, and phones, living standards increased sevenfold. But since the 2008 financial crisis, despite computerisation and the internet, productivity growth in many countries has been low, static or even, in the case of Japan, falling. Might the 20th century's extraordinary growth prove to be a unique event? Is tech itself the problem, seemingly creating solutions but in fact encouraging pointless activity? Or is the mistake to focus on productivity in the first place, and should we instead change how we value our activities and our time? This debate was sponsored by Theos. #philosophydiscussion #economics #productivity Chief Economics Commentator for the FT Martin Wolf, Yale Law professor Daniel Markovits and Head of Research at Theos, Madeleine Pennington debate whether the 21st century will prove to be unique. The Institute of Art and Ideas features videos and articles from cutting edge thinkers discussing the ideas that are shaping the world, from metaphysics to string theory, technology to democracy, aesthetics to genetics. ClassicalGuitarShed.com can help you on the journey. If you want to rise to new levels in your playing, it just takes time and strategic work. To play classical guitar well, you need to know: * how to hold and touch the guitar - form and positioning * how to move your fingers and hands - efficient, clean, and fluid * how to learn pieces - reading music, understanding what you see, ingraining, polishing * how to craft the music so it is beautiful - swells and fades, rhythm, touch * how to practice so all these skills improve over time and don't go away At the root of beautiful playing is a solid technique (aka “the way your hands move”). You may have beautiful music in your head, but if your hands can't play it, it won't come out of the guitar. But bad technique puts a limit on your playing. Speed, tone quality, and control can suffer. Good technique gets stronger and more instinctive with every practice. It forms the bedrock foundation for your music. And you may want to understand music so you learn it more easily and it makes more sense. This can help you avoid the excess frustration and dismay that comes with shoddy practice and prolonged confusion. But playing the notes is not enough. Like an actor bring words to life, we breathe life into our pieces. And we can do this in an organized way, day in and day out, reliably. Great musicians can play wonderfully in any mood. They do not rely on emotions. Instead, they create music that affects our emotions. This is a trained skill, not an inborn talent. Playing classical guitar is a long-term study. It's something we do in our homes as part of our days. We play for ourselves, for the quality it adds to life. We may enjoy playing guitar for others, but most of the time we are alone with our work. There are methods and formulas for great practice. We can use our time well so that see more progress. We can fix the problems and erase the mistakes. And we can enjoy conquering the plentiful challenges that classical guitar music offers. If you plan to play classical guitar for any length of time, it is worth it to get help. It's not something we can do on our own, like folk music. I have a structured and organized course to help you play classical guitar. If you like, you can learn more here: https://classicalguitarshed.com/membership/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=Traditional_Cielito_Lindo_Free_Classical_Guitar_Sheet_Music&utm_content=2nQo5BNEXt4 If you would like to hear me (Allen Mathews) playing, visit my other youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/allenmathews/
