In 1767, Hsinbyushin, king of the Konbaung dynasty of central Myanmar, launched an attack on the kingdom of Ayutthaya (central Thailand). After Hsinbyushin's victory, many of Ayutthaya's people were forcibly moved into the Burmese heartland, but with some continuing to work in their specialist fields. One such group were the Thai theatrical troupes. And they took the Burmese court by storm by giving performances of the Ramayana epic. Today, curator Alexandra Green looks at a ‘shwe chi doe’ or ‘kalaga’, which is a textile hanging from central Myanmar. The textiles depicts scenes from the 'The Ramayana', which originated in India, but which was adapted for local use in many parts of Southeast Asia. Although known in Myanmar before 1767, the narrative became particularly popular after the arrival of the Thai troupes. It was performed and adapted in a variety of art forms, showing the lasting impact of Thai theatre in Myanmar. Burma to Myanmar is on until 11 February 2024. De iconische Beurs van Berlage kent iedere Amsterdammer wel, maar zeker niet iedere Amsterdammer kent dit gebouw van bínnen, net als alle bijzondere verhalen die er over de Beurs vertellen zijn. Daar gaan wij verandering in brengen. ClassicalGuitarShed.com can help you on the journey. If you want to rise to new levels in your playing, it just takes time and strategic work. To play classical guitar well, you need to know: * how to hold and touch the guitar - form and positioning * how to move your fingers and hands - efficient, clean, and fluid * how to learn pieces - reading music, understanding what you see, ingraining, polishing * how to craft the music so it is beautiful - swells and fades, rhythm, touch * how to practice so all these skills improve over time and don't go away At the root of beautiful playing is a solid technique (aka “the way your hands move”). You may have beautiful music in your head, but if your hands can't play it, it won't come out of the guitar. But bad technique puts a limit on your playing. Speed, tone quality, and control can suffer. Good technique gets stronger and more instinctive with every practice. It forms the bedrock foundation for your music. And you may want to understand music so you learn it more easily and it makes more sense. This can help you avoid the excess frustration and dismay that comes with shoddy practice and prolonged confusion. But playing the notes is not enough. Like an actor bring words to life, we breathe life into our pieces. And we can do this in an organized way, day in and day out, reliably. Great musicians can play wonderfully in any mood. They do not rely on emotions. Instead, they create music that affects our emotions. This is a trained skill, not an inborn talent. Playing classical guitar is a long-term study. It's something we do in our homes as part of our days. We play for ourselves, for the quality it adds to life. We may enjoy playing guitar for others, but most of the time we are alone with our work. There are methods and formulas for great practice. We can use our time well so that see more progress. We can fix the problems and erase the mistakes. And we can enjoy conquering the plentiful challenges that classical guitar music offers. If you plan to play classical guitar for any length of time, it is worth it to get help. It's not something we can do on our own, like folk music. I have a structured and organized course to help you play classical guitar. If you like, you can learn more here: https://classicalguitarshed.com/membership/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=Mozzani_Feste_Lariane_Free_Classical_Guitar_Sheet_Music&utm_content=f65JwIZ3cHY If you would like to hear me (Allen Mathews) playing, visit my other youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/allenmathews/

Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe. The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: https://oxford-union.org/supportus

Sources & further reading: https://sites.google.com/view/sources-why-we-hate-each-other/ In 2022 nearly half of Americans expected a civil war in the next few years, one in five now believes political violence is justified. And it is not just the US but around the world. People increasingly see themselves as part of opposing teams. There are many different reasons for this, but one gets blamed a lot: social media. Social media divides us, makes us more extreme and less empathetic, it riles us up or sucks us into doom scrolling, making us stressed and depressed. It feels like we need to touch grass and escape to the real world. New research shows that we might have largely misinterpreted why this is the case. It turns out that the social media internet may uniquely undermine the way our brains work but not in the way you think. Virgin Galactic just started their first tourist space trips. But these flights don’t work like others you might have seen. Here’s what’s going on... On board the first flight were two pilots, a chief astronaut instructor, and three civilian passengers. The ship they were on doesn’t take off in the way we're used to seeing. Instead, a huge plane-like vehicle, called the “mothership” takes off on a runway with the passenger spacecraft attached to its underside. This passenger ship can reach an altitude of 55 miles, or 88 km, which is juuuuust past the boundary of space recognized by NASA - but not quite past the internationally recognized Karman Line. And tickets can go for a whopping $450,000. Would you want to go? This short is part of Huge If True, our optimistic show about science and tech. Introduced in 1950, the RT-159A/URC-4 survival radio was issued to American and Canadian military aircrews to allow them to communicate with rescue forces if they were forced down. Capable of transmitting and receiving voice signals on the VHF and UHF bands up to 170 kilometres away, the radio was a marvel of early electronics miniaturization, employing a clever and efficient circuit based entirely on vacuum tubes. Used in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the URC-4 was replaced in the late 1960s by more advanced transistorized radios. 0:00 Intro / Historical Overview 1:15 World of Warships Promo 2:50 External Features and Controls 7:53 Circuit Breakdown 11:54 URC-4 Successors 13:12 Outro SOURCES https://www.prc68.com/I/URC4.html https://patents.google.com/patent/US2866089 https://www.prc68.com/I/PRC112.shtml https://www.eetimes.com/retro-wireless-hoffman-rt-159a-urc-4-survival-radio/ https://www.n6cc.com/urc-64-and-urc-4-aircrew-rescue-radio/ https://www.edn.com/letters-vets-ham-operators-recall-the-urc-4-radio/ http://www.vmarsmanuals.co.uk/archive/4029_TO-12R2-2URC4-2_AN_URC4.pdf https://www.greenradio.de/e_prc90.htm https://radionerds.com/images/e/e4/TO-12R2-2URC4-1C_AN_URC4.pdf

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a French Impressionist painter whose eye for beauty made him one of the movement's most popular practitioners. He is best known for his paintings of bustling Parisian modernity and leisure in the last three decades of the 19th century. Though celebrated as a colorist with a keen eye for capturing the movement of light and shadow, Renoir started to explore Renaissance painting in the middle of his career, which led him to integrate more line and composition into his mature works and create some of his era's most timeless canvases. There are currently almost 3,000 young people on the waiting list for gender care in the Netherlands. They are vulnerable adolescents who are frequently subjected to discrimination. Many of them suffer severe mental distress. Doctors at the gender clinic in Amsterdam are pioneers in care for transgender young people. The treatment developed here years ago is now used worldwide. Now, criticism is growing. International experts are questioning the scientific evidence put forward by the clinicians in Amsterdam. Zembla investigates the Dutch transgender protocol. #Zembla #investigativejournalism #transgender
