Their diverse landscapes inspired Caspar David Friedrich, a native of Greifswald, to create some of his greatest masterpieces in the 19th century. The documentary follows the traces of the painter in his homeland and meets people who share his enthusiasm for this unique maritime region. AD: Watch Qualcomm's tutorial series and try out the RB5 Development Kit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlbXs2Sb7nw and a big thanks to Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. for sponsoring this video! I built a Star Wars Speeder Bike with omni-directional wheels powered by electric jet engines. I also have a plan for another version of the Star Wars Speeder Bike. Last time, I took the guts from a hoverboard and used them to make a balancing bike. Each original hoverboard wheel is mounted on the bike and drives the bike wheels with a drive belt. This makes the resulting velocity the same as it would have been when the hoverboard wheels were touching the ground. So now the balancing electronics still work as designed since the output velocity of the vehicle is the same. *The ocean is deeper than you think! And our maps of the deep sea are surprisingly bad. We know less about the ocean floor than we do the surface of Mars. Erected at 2430 meters high on a rocky crest in the heart of the Peruvian Andes, the city of Machu Picchu remains in the eyes of many this civilization’s most breathtaking and enigmatic urban creation. This extraordinary sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still holds many mysteries. But today, using state-of-the-art technology, experts now have the means to go back in time to probe the invisible, to explore what lies beneath and around this ancient city, and reveal its secrets. Why deep sea maps are SO BAD (and how to fix it)... Subscribe for more optimistic science and tech stories. Our maps of the ocean are surprisingly bad! On Google Maps it looks like we know so much… but we know less about the ocean floor than we do the surface of Mars. And that’s a big problem, because we are using the ocean all the time: We’re laying internet cables across it, we fight wars in it, we search it during a crisis - like the imploded OceanGate Titan submersible or the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. 71% of the surface of the Earth is water! And yet we have a surprisingly limited view of what’s below it. But that’s also understandable. Because cartographically speaking, water sucks. For Mars or Earth’s surface, we can take pictures. But light doesn’t get to the ocean floor, so we need other ways to see it. The good news is, we’re developing that tech right now, and an international group called Seabed 2030 is working to piece together a better map. There is a terrifying, incredible, alien world on our own planet, and we’re FINALLY using technology to see it more clearly. In this episode of Huge If True, I dive deep - with help from my friend and fellow video journalist @johnnyharris - to show you how we’re mapping the ocean, the surprising things we’ve discovered in the depths, and why this new technology could be… huge if true :) Chapters: 00:00 How bad are our ocean maps? 01:40 How deep is the ocean? 03:05 What is the deepest part of the ocean? 04:04 The craziest method to map the ocean 06:20 How does sonar work? 07:31 What did the first ocean maps look like? 09:30 How do we map the ocean now? 10:30 What is Seabed 2030? 11:40 How do we use underwater robots? 12:27 Concerns with mapping the deep ocean 13:11 Why deep ocean mapping is huge if true You can find me on TikTok here for short, fun tech explainers: https://www.tiktok.com/@cleoabram You can find me on Instagram here for more personal stories: https://www.instagram.com/cleoabram You can find me on Twitter here for thoughts, threads and curated news: https://twitter.com/cleoabram Bio: Cleo Abram is an Emmy-nominated independent video journalist. The Surly Big Dummy is the last of a dying breed: Human-powered long tail cargo bikes. This is the last year Surly is making the Big Dummy, but I bought mine used on Facebook Marketplace for $800. The previous owner had customized it for use at his bike shop, running errands and delivering bikes to customers (yes, it tows bikes). I customized the Big Dummy for spending the day with my kids. For now, my daughter will ride on the back with her balance bike mounted on the rear, and a year from now we will include a baby seat for my son. I'm a part owner of Clik. We usually think that it is free will that gives meaning to life, but what if exactly the opposite is true, that the fact that we don't have free will makes life meaningful? A couple of weeks ago Bernardo Kastrup, the executive director of the Essentia Foundation, wrote an essay (https://www.essentiafoundation.org/the-red-herring-of-free-will-in-objective-idealism/reading/) arguing that, under objective idealism, the whole convulsiveness around free will is a meaningless red herring. In his opinion, the free will vs determinism debate misses the point, because fundamentally there is no distinction between nature’s will and what nature is necessitated to do. In other words: what we assume to be free will is, on a universal level, exactly the same as determinism. In this video ,Hans Busstra sits down with Bernardo Kastrup to discuss this line of reasoning while also trying to make it personal: why do we want free will so badly on a psychological level? Why, as a culture, do we usually associate determinism with nihilism and meaninglessness? The conversation covers Laplace’s Demon, computational irreducibility, and works towards Kastrup's main point: if you can accept that, on a personal level, you don't have free will, you realize that you are being ‘played’ by a universe that—due to computational irreducibility—cannot 'see' where it's going before it goes. Instead of suffering as an effect of 'bad' free will decisions by human agents, suffering becomes part of the inevitable evolution of the universe. 00:00 Introduction 04:33 Why do we want free will so badly? 07:33 Laplace's Demon 09:09 Bernardo explaining computational irreducibility 13:22 Is there a GRAND algorithm? Bernardo on randomness... 16:17 Wa cannot NOT be what we are, therefore in a sense we are fully determined... 17:40 If we truly had free will we would be completely happy 24:04 On compatabilism, the idea that free will is somehow an emergent phenomenon 26:12 Does free will have a function, evolutionary? 32:10 On B.F.Skinner and behaviorism 35:14 How Silicon Valley likes the idea of no free will to nudge our behaviour 38:09 To model a human mind, you need to model the whole universe 38:45 On strong emergence 41:30 We are addicted to free will thinking 45:29 Is your life like a movie that you watch? 48:21 On the WILL of the universe according to Schopenhauer 51:30 If desire and necessity are the same thing, the concept of free will becomes meaningless 53:41 Can the universe WILL something completely else, that would change the regularities we see in nature? 56:03 If we would go back to the initial state, would we end up with the same universe? 57:33 Hans still wants a little bit of free will 59:53 Bernardo on the result orientedness of society 1:02:00 But what if I kick you Bernardo? On moral responsibility 1:06:28 On the ethical implications and Daniel Dennet's plea to stop telling people they don't have free will 1:07:31 Why nihilism is the wrong conclusion 1:08:46 If we would consider ourselves as chips in a computer 1:11:10 We DO have moral responsibility 1:12:52 Our suffering is valuable input for the universe 1:14:58 The two habits of thinking that obscure us 1:18:04 Conclusion by Bernardo, quoting Fred Matser: life is about being played by the universe Films fragments as quoted in this video, in order of appearance (as a non-profit, Essentia Foundation uses fragments like these, as is common in YouTube edits, under fair use provisions; but if copyright holders do not agree, please let us know): I Origins (2014) Cast Away (2000) Into the Wild (2007) The Pursuit Of Happyness (2006) Copyright © 2023 by Essentia Foundation. Slovenia got hit by lethal flash floods and pouring landslides in August, destroying hundreds of houses and flooding thousands more – but only six people died. How is that possible?! In this new episode of “Done Differently”, we look at Slovenia’s “disaster subculture”, huge network of volunteer firefighters ready to save their communities, and how tight national coordination kicks in when there’s an emergency to handle – and investigate how that helped prevent deaths. With climate change fuelling ever more extreme weather events in Europe, disasters like this one will keep hitting Europe in the future – and worse. What can other countries do differently to save people as fast as possible when disaster hits? In our series of explanations "Done Differently" we take a look at how current topics that move you are discussed elsewhere. We welcome feedback below the video. Wagyu and Caviar Gyozas Serves: 6 Prep time: 60min Cook time: 10min Ingredients: - 500g (1.1 lbs) high-grade Wagyu, finely diced (or fatty pork mince) - 1/2 head Napa cabbage, thinly sliced - 2 spring onions, diced - Thumb-sized piece of ginger, peeled and grated - Small bunch of chives, finely sliced - 3 tbsp soy sauce - 1 packet gyoza wrappers - 1 tbsp cornflour - 1 tbsp flour - Caviar - as much as you want Method: 1. To make the gyoza filling, blanch the sliced cabbage in boiling water for 30 seconds. Drain and rinse under icy cold water to stop the cooking process. 2. In a bowl, mix together the Wagyu, cooked cabbage, spring onions, ginger, chives, and soy sauce. 3. Take just under a tablespoon of the filling and place it in a gyoza wrapper, ensuring it's sealed tightly. 4. Arrange your gyozas on a tray dusted with cornflour. 5. To make the slurry, mix the cornflour with the flour and add about 3 tablespoons of water. 6. In a pan for which you have a lid, over medium heat, use some of the leftover Wagyu fat to render and grease the pan. 7. Add the gyozas, achieving a golden colour on the bottom. Then pour in your slurry and quickly cover with the lid. 8. Steam the gyozas for 3-4 minutes before carefully turning them out onto a plate. 9. Finish by placing generous spoonfuls of caviar on top of each one. #food #howto #wagyu #cooking #recipe #dumplings #caviar #foodies #tasty #luxury
