When is infringing on civil liberties fair game against political opponents? 2023 has seen a depressing uptick in attacks on civil liberties in the name of political disagreement, from across the ideological spectrum. Jeremy Corbyn was a victim of a frivolous lawsuit to silence him. Nigel Farage claimed his bank account was closed due to his controversial ‘values’. And across both sides of the Atlantic, prominent activists, journalists and influencers have been deplatformed or experienced financial repercussions as a consequence of their political stances. The list goes on. In this live discussion, we’ll be asking: Is it ever justifiable to curtail civil liberties, like freedom of speech and financial access, when the individuals involved hold polarising views? Or does this set a dangerous precedent for the erosion of democratic norms? Our diverse panel — including our own Yanis Varoufakis — will bring various perspectives to the table on the vital issue. SO IF YOU LOOK AT IT THAT WAY I NEED TO DISCLOSE THIS IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT, However i try to place no bias upon them, and let you make your own conclusions, all i can say is i do quite like the mics, i wouldnt have thought of giving them a go, but i am pleasantly surprised, as you know i use RODE mics and Wireless mics for my camera in all of the videos, but was pleased to try these proffessional mic's i especially like the fact that you can plug them in via usb to a phone or computer without an audio interface, and just sound good out of the box. for someone looking for an all round faff free mic, i would recommend them, and that is an honest opinion. packaging is a bit overkill and was hoping they'd get sent with a mic mount direct to a stand aswell as a suspension mount, but you cant have it all! also comes with a pop shield, which does its job. i like them, to the point i might get another to use for other things, as im used to an old akg 242, which is good, but the noise floor isn't great it might be a bit broken. anyway those are my thoughts. Another bonus is it comes with a long USB C to USB C cable and an xlr cable. which is handy. Tesla just released this video of Optimus, the humanoid robot. People are freaking out because according to the video, the robot can now sort objects by itself after being told to. It can react and adapt to changes in real time, like a human kind of meanly moving its blocks around. It even appears to correctly fix an object’s orientation all on its own. It can do that because of it’s apparent ability to understand where each of its limbs are in space and a neural network that runs within the robot, which helps it process visual information from its cameras and make decisions in real time. This is really huge if true... If you like optimistic tech and science stories, subscribe for more! #shorts #tech #tesla #robot #optimus #stem #robotics
Lahmacun Ingredients - 300g (10.6 oz) plain or AP flour - 5g (0.2 oz) instant yeast - 0.5 tsp sugar - 1 tsp salt - 180ml (3/4 cup) water - 300g (10.6 oz) lamb mince - 2 tomatoes, grated - 1 onion, finely diced - 2 cloves garlic, finely grated - small bunch of parsley, chiffonade - 2 tbsp yoghurt - 1 tsp salt - 1 tsp black pepper - 1 tsp cumin - 1 tsp paprika - lemon and parsley, to serve Method 1. Place the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt into the bowl of a stand mixer (if you don’t have a mixer, just use your hands in a bowl). 2. Add the water and mix on medium for 4-5 minutes or until the dough is smooth. 3. Roll the dough into a ball, place it back into the mixing bowl, and cover with a tea towel. Leave it at room temperature for 1 hour or until it has almost doubled in size. 4. While that's proofing, prepare the topping by mixing all the other ingredients in a separate bowl. 5. Once the dough is proofed, divide it into 6 even portions and roll each tightly. Cover and leave to rest for 10 minutes. 6. Preheat your pizza oven to 400 c/750 f or your oven to its maximum temperature. If using an oven, you will need a pizza stone, heavy tray, or cast iron pan inside the oven as well. 7. Roll out each dough ball very thinly, then spread the mince mixture thinly, leaving a 1cm edge around the outside. 8. Place into the oven for 3-6 minutes, depending on its temperature. You are looking for a nice colour on the dough and for the meat to be cooked through. 9. Serve with fresh parsley and a squeeze of fresh lemon.

China's economic growth has experienced a slowdown, with forecasts for 2023 indicating a GDP growth rate of less than 5%. This is a significant departure from the high growth rates China had enjoyed until the late 2010s. Many attribute this slowdown to a combination of factors, including issues in China's real estate market, a considerable debt burden, and various economic challenges. However, it's important to recognize that a significant portion of this economic deceleration can be attributed to US policies designed to curb China's growth. These anti-China policies seem to follow a familiar pattern in US foreign policy, reminiscent of tactics employed during the Cold War. The primary goal is to hinder economic and technological competition from a major global rival. The first notable instance of such a strategy was the technology blockade imposed on the Soviet Union during the Cold War. A less well-known but equally significant application of this strategy occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s when the US deliberately aimed to slow Japan's economic growth. At that time, Japanese firms were outcompeting their American counterparts in critical sectors such as semiconductors, consumer electronics, and automobiles. In the mid- to late 1980s, US politicians imposed restrictions on Japanese exports to the US market through "voluntary" limits agreed upon with Japan. They also pressured Japan to artificially inflate its currency, which had the effect of dampening export growth. This deliberate slowdown in economic growth led to financial difficulties for many Japanese companies, eventually culminating in a financial crisis in the early 1990s. During this period, Japan faced constraints on its economic policies due to its reliance on the US for security, which made it more compliant with US demands. However, China today is in a different position. It enjoys greater autonomy in dealing with US protectionist measures because it is less dependent on the US for its security. This has allowed China to adopt a more flexible approach in responding to US policies aimed at containing its economic rise. The US initiated its efforts to slow China's economic growth around 2015 when it began viewing China as a strategic rival rather than a trade partner. China's "Made in China 2025" policy, aimed at achieving leadership in cutting-edge technologies, and the Belt and Road Initiative, focused on infrastructure development, raised alarms in US policy circles. The playbook employed against China includes tactics such as creating trade alliances that exclude China and imposing tariffs that flout World Trade Organization rules. These strategies were initially introduced by President Trump and have been further reinforced by President Biden. As a result of these policies, China's share of US imports has steadily declined, with a 29% drop between June 2022 and June 2023. However, the dynamics of China's economy are multifaceted, and the decline in exports to the US is not solely responsible for the overall slowdown. In contrast to Japan in the 1990s, China has more room to maneuver and seek alternative trading partners globally. One of its key strategies for countering US protectionism is expanding the Belt and Road Initiative to increase exports to Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In conclusion, while the US's attempt to contain China's economic growth follows a familiar playbook, it is both flawed in principle and likely to encounter significant challenges in practice. China's ability to forge partnerships worldwide and continue expanding its trade and technological advancements is expected to prevail in the face of US containment efforts.

Ingredients - 400g (14 oz) beef steak (I used Sirloin/strip loin) sliced thinly - 2 small brown onions, thinly sliced - 3 cloves garlic, crushed - Small bunch of thyme - 500ml (2.1 cups) beef stock - 10ml (2 tsp) liquid aminos (or Maggi seasoning) - 12 slices of provolone cheese - 1 long hoagie roll or French stick Method 1. To make the dipping sauce, add half of the sliced onions to a pan over medium heat and cook until they just soften and start to brown. 2. Add the garlic and thyme, followed by the beef stock and aminos. Reduce by half. (The sauce should taste slightly salty, which balances when eaten with the bread.) 3. Cut the roll in half and drizzle with olive oil. Toast on a hot flat plate over high heat. Once toasted, set aside. 4. Next, add some oil and the remaining onions to the hot plate. Cook for 2-3 minutes and push to one side. 5. Add the beef to the hot plate and season well with salt and pepper. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until it has some colour. 6. Once the beef is almost done, add the onions on top followed by the cheese. Let the cheese melt, then place the toasted roll on top and flip the whole thing. 7. Slice in half and serve with the reduced sauce for dipping.

40,000 years ago, the Eurasian steppes were inhabited by our close relatives, the Neanderthals. Advanced and remarkably human-like, their disappearance remains a mystery. In this extra long documentary on the Neanderthal Apocalypse, we explore various theories: from their physical traits and hunting methods to the possibility of a devastating super volcano. Additionally, recent genetic studies suggest Neanderthal DNA might still persist in modern humans. Dive into the enigma of their extinction and the legacy they left behind.
