Uit onderzoek van het Trimbos-instituut en de Universiteit Utrecht blijkt dat jongeren de afgelopen vier jaar veel negatiever zijn gaan denken over homoseksualiteit. Die cijfers komen overeen met onderzoek naar Amsterdamse jongeren uit 2023, waaruit blijkt dat er een sterke daling is in lhbti-acceptatie onder jongeren. Het COC noemt de cijfers 'schrikbarend'. Het onderzoek dat gisteren is gepubliceerd, wordt elke vier jaar uitgevoerd in vrijwel elk Europees land. Vooral onder jongens op de middelbare school is een sterke daling te zien: het aandeel jongens met een positieve houding tegenover homoseksualiteit is tussen 2021 en 2025 bijna gehalveerd, van 40 naar 22 procent. "We waren niet verrast, maar wel weer geschrokken", zegt Philip Tijsma van COC Nederland over de nieuwe cijfers. "Het is toch echt schrikbarend dat onder jongens de acceptatie gewoon is gehalveerd." Het COC, oorspronkelijk het Cultuur- en Ontspanning Centrum, is een belangenorganisatie voor lhbti+ personen en geeft onder meer voorlichting op scholen. 'Conservatieve wind' De landelijke daling sluit aan bij een ontwikkeling die al langer in Amsterdam is te zien. Uit GGD-onderzoek uit 2023 blijkt dat 32 procent van de Amsterdamse jongens van 13 tot en met 16 jaar het normaal vindt dat twee mensen van hetzelfde geslacht verliefd zijn op elkaar. Dat onderzoek maakte destijds veel los bij de gemeenteraad. Meerdere partijen spraken toen van een 'conservatieve wind', die over Europa waait. Tijsma schrijft de daling in acceptatie vooral toe aan sociale media. "In het algemeen zie je dat religieuze mensen, conservatieve mensen en mannen negatiever denken over homoseksualiteit en transgender mensen dan andere personen", schrijft hij. "Maar die waren er vier jaar geleden ook al, dus daar is niet zoveel in veranderd. We zien de veranderingen eigenlijk vooral toch in de sociale media." Manosfeer De rol van sociale media komt ook naar voren in het onderzoek dat gisteren is gepubliceerd. Zo wordt de zogenoemde 'manosfeer' genoemd als mogelijke factor voor de daling van de acceptatie van homoseksualiteit. Binnen de manosfeer zijn verschillende invloedrijke influencers actief, onder wie bijvoorbeeld Andrew Tate. Hij heeft zich in video's en andere online-uitingen regelmatig negatief uitgelaten over genderrollen en homoseksualiteit. Tate zit momenteel vast in de Verenigde Staten in afwachting van een mogelijke uitlevering aan het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Daar wordt hij verdacht van verkrachting en mensenhandel. In video's over de manosfeer wordt regelmatig een negatief beeld geschetst van homoseksualiteit. Die video's zijn voornamelijk populair bij jongens en jonge mannen. "Daar horen jongeren de meest nare dingen over wat het zou betekenen om een man of een vrouw te zijn", zegt Tijsma. "En dat heeft ook veel invloed op de opvatting over homoseksualiteit." Experts van de GGD kwamen vorig jaar langs in de gemeenteraad om de Amsterdamse cijfers toe te lichten. Daaruit bleek dat de cijfers sterk verschilden per school. Waar het percentage van acceptatie destijds op sommige scholen op 89 procent lag, lag het op andere scholen op slechts 9 procent. Op de meest recente Amsterdamse cijfers moeten we nog even wachten: de GGD is dit jaar bezig met nieuw onderzoek naar homo-acceptatie onder Amsterdamse jongeren. De VS, Denemarken en Groenland hebben een akkoord bereikt over de veiligheid van Groenland. Daarmee lijkt er na eerdere dreigementen van president Trump om het eiland in het Noordpoolgebied desnoods met geweld in te nemen een diplomatieke oplossing gevonden, waarbij Groenland in handen blijft van de Denen. Volgens Trump geeft het akkoord de VS "permanente controle over de veiligheid en alle andere behoeften" van Groenland. De Deense premier Frederiksen zegt dat de overeenkomst "de veiligheid in de Arctische en Noord-Atlantische regio versterkt", maar ging niet in op details die Trump noemde in een socialemediabericht over het akkoord. In dat bericht schrijft Trump dat de VS "onmiddellijk zal beginnen met het opzetten van een grote militaire aanwezigheid" in Groenland. Footage includes bucket dredging and tin plate fabrication using the finer quality Straits tin and hot dip galvanization. Miners excavate ore in open cast mines. ‘Modern’ methods of producing goods from tin plates commercially with precision tools and assembly lines are compared to older methods and small batch making. Equipment featured includes gravel pumps, sluices, bucket dredges, tinning machines, carrying poles and hand tools for the excavation of waste rock. Later portions provide diagrams of machinery used for tin plate production. Female workers are pictured on the factory floor during the tin plating section. Various metal wares are produced including cans for food items and tea kettles. Babbitt and Britannica alloys are prepared. Het was een proces van lange adem voor Noorderling Massih Hutak. 15 jaar schreef hij aan zijn debuutroman 'Voor Issa'. Een boek over een jonge man die zich voorbereidt op een bokswedstrijd, met ervaringen en invloeden uit het leven van Hutak. "Ik noem het autobiografische fictie." Het zijn de straten en pleinen van Noord die als herkenbaar decor fungeren voor het boek Voor Issa. De hoofdpersoon, die niet bij naam wordt genoemd, bereidt zich twaalf weken lang voor op een bokswedstrijd. Het begint bij fit zijn, maar het is vooral ook een mentale worsteling. De parallellen met Hutaks eigen leven zijn helder: het vluchten uit Afghanistan, opgroeien zonder moeder en de wijk Buikslotermeer en het Plan van Gool waar van alles gebeurt. Het is fictie, maar veel zag Hutak met zijn eigen ogen of ervoer hij wel degelijk helemaal zelf. "Ik noem het autobiografische fictie", geeft hij aan. "Dus de hoofdpersoon en ik lijken op elkaar, maar leven in parallelle universums." Noord is thuis Als aanjager van de actiegroep Verdedig Noord en als kind van de buurt, is het weinig verrassend dat het stadsdeel, en specifiek de wijk Buikslotermeer, een grote rol speelt in zijn boek. "En dit is zowel voor de hoofdpersoon, als voor mij de eerste en enige plek waar ik langer dan een paar jaar heb gewoond", legt Hutak uit. "En dat je op een gegeven moment denkt: dit voelt als thuis en als we hier niet meer weg hoeven, dan is dat oké." In het boek bereidt de hoofdpersoon zich dus voor op een bokswedstrijd en dat is een leerzaam proces. "Gaandeweg die trainingen leert hij van zijn bokscoach, die een van de belangrijkste rolmodellen voor hem is. Lessen filosofische lessen in de boksring die hij dan weer meeneemt naar zijn leven buiten de sportschool en de boksring om. Wat hem eindelijk leert omgaan met die turbulente jaren uit zijn jeugd." Sociaal commentaar En turbulent was het soms zeker. Een passage in het boek gaat over een rapbattle, die uiteindelijk ontaard in drie pistoolschoten in de lucht. De schutter zegt vervolgens: "Dat houdt de huren laag." Voor Hutak een favoriet stuk uit het boek. "Wat ik supergrappig vind aan dit stuk is dat het heel ernstig, heel grappig en tegelijkertijd ook sociaal commentaar is." Hutak hoopt dat het verhaal jongeren met een migratie-achtergrond kan inspireren. "Ik hoop dat de jongeren die dit gaan lezen, ook ouderen, maar met name de jongeren, eruit halen dat hun verhaal ertoe doet." Vijftien jaar aan gewerkt Het was niet van de ene op de andere dag geschreven. Op zijn 18e begon hij, maar regelmatig legde hij het werk weg en lag het op de plank. Uiteindelijk heeft hij 15 jaar gewerkt aan zijn debuutroman. "Het grappige is dat de passages van vijftien jaar geleden onaangeraakt zijn en er zitten passages in van een paar maanden geleden. Toch is het één overzichtelijk verhaal. Housing, public transport and the rising cost of living were among the biggest issues in Berlin’s election campaign, and The Left sought to make them the centre of its message. The party wants major changes in housing policy, more affordable mobility and measures to address problems that many Berliners encounter in everyday life, including the city’s ongoing waste and cleanliness issues. At the same time, the campaign was overshadowed by controversy, including antisemitism allegations and debates within the party over its stance on Israel and Gaza. Die Linke officially uses the term “genocide” to describe Israel’s actions in Gaza, a position that remains highly contested in Germany’s political landscape. The party itself rejects accusations of antisemitism. Now, as coalition talks begin, the focus turns to what happens next and whether The Left will be able to translate its election promises into actual policy. Samson Birhane, who is from Eritrea, and Ahmed Soliman, a gay asylum seeker from Egypt, were both deported by the Trump administration despite U.S. immigration courts granting them protections. On September 11, police forces arrived at Hotel Bamy in the city of Malabo, where more than two dozen people have been confined after their deportation from the United States to Equatorial Guinea, a country they have no ties to, as part of President Trump’s secretive “third-country” agreements. Birhane and Soliman say they were arrested and taken to prison for speaking out about the inhumane conditions endured by U.S. deportees at the hotel and threats by armed forces. While confined at the hotel, U.S. deportees have decried denial of medical care and legal assistance, and abuses they’ve described as psychological torture. “Starting in November 2025, … the United States started this horrendous policy of sending immigrants not from Equatorial Guinea to Equatorial Guinea, a country that the U.S. knows very, very well that is a human rights violator,” says human rights lawyer Tutu Alicante. “The State Department reports that the U.S. has been putting out for the last three decades are consistent about the fact that Equatorial Guinea uses torture, uses incommunicado detentions, and often extrajudicial killings of people that it keeps in prison.” Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on over 1,500 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. Their credentials were confiscated or deactivated when they attempted to enter White House grounds over the weekend. Al negentig jaar verzamelt het Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis belangrijke archieven van wereldwijde sociale en arbeidersbewegingen. Een schatkamer aan archieven, boeken en foto's: van geheime overheidspapieren over de kraakbeweging tot aan de enige handgeschreven pagina van het Communistisch Manifest ter wereld. "Indrukwekkend, hoewel het handschrift van Marx totaal onleesbaar is." We worden begeleid naar de twee kluizen in het archief, waarin de meeste belangrijk stukken liggen. Zoals die handgeschreven bladzijde van het Communistisch Manifest van Karl Marx, samen met Friedrich Engels de grondlegger van het communisme in Europa. Het is de enige in de hele wereld, benoemd tot Unesco-erfgoed. Oud-directeur Leo Lucassen heeft het een keer mogen zien. "Ik ben niet zo romantisch aangelegd. Het is indrukwekkend, zeker het handschrift van Karl Marx zelf, wat overigens maar weinig mensen in de wereld kunnen lezen. Het is totaal onleesbaar handschrift. Prachtig dat wij dat hier hebben, maar ik ben geen fetisjist." Na zes en een half jaar directeur van het IISG te zijn geweest, zwaait historicus Leo Lucassen af. Hij gaat met pensioen nu in historicus Lily Knibbeler een waardige opvolger is gevonden. Een mooi moment om met beiden een bezoek te brengen aan de grote collectie archieven. Bijna 6000 archieven, 1 miljoen boeken en tijdschriften en 150.000 tekeningen en prenten. De focus ligt voornamelijk op sociale en arbeidersbewegingen wereldwijd. Onderzoekers kunnen hier stukken opvragen en inzien en er is ook een voor iedereen toegankelijke studiezaal Het instituut opende de deuren in 1935 in een rumoerige politieke tijd. "Het was een tijd waarin Hitler al aan de macht was in Duitsland, Franco in Spanje, Mussolini in Italië en Stalin in Rusland", vertelt Lucassen. "In vier jaar tijd is er enorm veel materiaal uit Rusland, Polen, Duitsland, Spanje, noem maar op, naar Amsterdam gekomen omdat het hier dan een veilige plek zou hebben. Met de nadruk op 'zou', want men realiseerde zich toen niet dat in mei 1940 de Duitsers zouden binnenvallen." Toen dat gebeurde stonden de nazi's al snel voor de deur van het IISG, maar niet om de archieven te vernietigen, aldus Lucassen. "De nazi's waren met name heel geïnteresseerd in de ideologie van de tegenstander. Ze wilden het niet verbranden, maar juist als studiemateriaal hebben. Dan begrijpen ze de Marxisten beter, de grote vijanden. Dat gebeurde op heel hoog niveau, denk aan Hitler en Rosenberg." De stukken werden door heel Europa verspreid. In Berlijn en Frankfurt, en sommige stukken gingen zelfs naar Poolse zoutmijnen. Pas na de oorlog kwam het archief langzaamaan weer terug naar Amsterdam, hoewel een deel nog altijd kwijt is. En ook nu is de beveiliging van de archieven - fysiek en digitaal - een topprioriteit. Omdat het vooral gaat om sociale en economische ongelijkheid, kan de collectie gevoelige informatie bevatten. "Zeker omdat daar dan weer namen van activisten instaan die nu nog leven. Bijvoorbeeld van de Hongkongse paraplubeweging. Ja, de Chinese staat zou dat wel willen weten." En dat is de essentie van het instituut, benadrukt nieuwe directeur Lily Knibbeler. "De ontbrekende puzzelstukjes liggen vaak hier. We vinden het superbelangrijk dat niet alleen het verhaal van de macht verteld wordt, maar dat juist ook de marginale groepen, de minderheden, de tegenbewegingen gehoord worden." "Het is dus ook onze verantwoordelijkheid om te garanderen dat opgevraagde stukken niet te herleiden zijn naar bepaalde activisten of hun familie", vult Lucassen aan. Zowel Lucassen als Knibbeler hebben zorgen over het huidige politieke, maar ook meteorologische klimaat. "Denk aan de democratie. Het archief heeft daar heel veel materiaal voor. Hoe de democratische instellingen zijn opgebouwd en onder welke voorwaarden. Maar globaal staat die democratie onder druk. Het is niet meer vanzelfsprekend dat we hier in het Westen een democratie hebben. Naast klimaatverandering is dat een van de grote zorgen", aldus Lucassen. "Dus wij staan ook wel echt voor die meerstemmigheid die eigenlijk de kern van de democratie is", vult Knibbeler aan. Volgens haar zou de politiek er goed aan doen om die meerstemmigheid te faciliteren. "Optimisme is een plicht", concludeert Lucassen. "Ik heb kleinkinderen. Ik kan me niet veroorloven om heel pessimistisch te zijn. Gochugaru and sesame beef jerky Ingredients - 1 kg lean beef (eye of round, top round, or flank steak) - 2 tsp onion powder - 2 tsp garlic powder - 125ml (1/2 cup) soy sauce - 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce - 2 tbsp brown sugar - 2 tsp black pepper - 1 tsp smoked paprika - 1 tsp gochugaru - White sesame seeds, ground pepper leaf for topping Method 1. Trim the fat off the beef. Freeze 1–2 hours until firm, then slice thinly against the grain about 5mm thick. 2. In a large bowl, add the onion powder, garlic powder, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, pepper, paprika and gochugaru. Use clean hands to mix the sliced beef through the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for 2 days. Mix the beef twice a day while it marinates. 3. After 2 days, remove the beef from the marinade and lay flat on dehydrator trays, making sure they don’t touch. Pat dry with a paper towel. Evenly sprinkle sesame seeds and pepper leaf powder over the top. 4. Dry at 60°C for 4–6 hours, checking for a firm, bendable texture. 5. Store in an airtight container and enjoy.
