Most people will probably think of a lever, and indeed levers provide a massive mechanical advantage. All you need is a fulcrum upon which to place your lever. But there’s a problem with levers. Their greatest strength is also their greatest weakness. With more length comes more power, yes, but the longer the lever the easier it is to break. Sometimes a much shorter tool is better suited to the job. The humble fulcrum is much stronger than the lever. That’s because a fulcrum is essentially a wedge. And a strain wave transmission harnesses the power of the wedge to turn it into a transmission. A conventional gear set only engages one or two teeth pairs at any given time. A strain wave or harmonic drive transmission can engage as much as 30% of its total tooth count simultaneously, which greatly improves load distribution and completely eliminates play. One of the benefits of such tooth engagement is that strain wave gearboxes have zero backlash. Less backlash than any other mass-produced transmission design. This makes strain wave gearboxes champions of positional accuracy and repeatability. It’s called a strain wave because we need strain to deform the flexible ring and this strain creates tooth engagement that travels around the outer ring like a wave. The flexible ring is called a flexspline, the rigid ring is called a centerspline and the input is called a wave generator. The transmission is also known under its commercial name, Harmonic Drive. Now the strain wave isn’t just super accurate it is also unbeatable when at delivering maximum torque in a minimal package. It’s capability to maximize torque while being ultra-compact and lightweight is the reason why it was chosen as the transmission for the electrically driven wheels of the Apollo Lunar Rover. Nasa was extremely limited in terms of payload but at the same time needed to produce sufficient torque so the strain wave was chosen because no other transmission could offer the most torque in the smallest package. Due to all off the above strain wave gears are a staple transmission not just in aerospace but also in robotics and associated fields. Ok, so if they offer the most torque in the smallest package, why did I call cycloidal drives torque gods in one of my videos. Was it clickbait? Not really. Being a torque god isn’t just about increasing torque it is also about maximum torque capacity and resistance to shock loads and overloading. This is where cycloidal drives come out on top. Strain wave gearboxes can be incredibly reliable and offer effectively zero backlash throughout their entire service life. They are not weak, but the flexspline must be very thin in order to be elastic and it is this thinness that can lead to failure under repeated shock loads or other kinds of abuse. This makes cycloidal drives the more robust solution because in a cycloidal drive you have very little than can break. Strain wave gearboxes have a unique talent that neither planetaries nor cycloids have. All three of these transmissions are scalable. The catch is that both planetaries and cycloids grow axially when we add more stages to them. But strain waves grow radially. The gear ratio of strain wave gearboxes isn’t only influenced by the number of teeth but also by the difference in the number of teeth between the flexspline and the centerspline. The greater the difference in teeth number the higher the gear ratio. Pretty much all real strain wave gearboxes out there have a two tooth difference because it offers a great balance of accuracy, strength and torque increase. Strain wave gearboxes with a three tooth difference do exist. What’s important to note here is that the tooth difference determines the number of engagement zones, i.e. you need a three-pronged wave generator to create the 3 tooth engagement zones needed for the three tooth difference. Wie op de Noordermarkt een biologisch bruin emmerbrood wil kopen, moet diep in de buidel tasten. Voor maar liefst 22 euro is dit brood te koop. Ook voor kiembrood wordt met 20 euro een flink bedrag gevraagd. Deze prijzen zorgen voor flinke discussies, zowel online als op straat. "Vind ik totaal belachelijk", laat een voorbijganger weten. Een ander is het ermee eens: "Ik houd echt van zuurdesembrood, maar 20 euro gaat me echt te ver." De prijs van het brood zorgt voor veel reacties. Aanleiding voor de ophef is een video die op social media verscheen via het account Havermelkelite. In de video wordt het brood getoond, waarna veel mensen online hun verbazing over de prijs uitspreken. Toch is er ook begrip en nuance onder bezoekers van de markt. Zo vertelt een vrouw dat mensen vooral kiezen voor kwaliteit en meer waarde hechten aan producten als ze weten waar het vandaan komt en hoe het is gemaakt. Een koper legt uit dat hij een half brood koop en het heel dun snijdt: "Het kost wat, maar dan heb je ook wat." Eerlijke prijs De verkoper van het brood is Wim Steinhauer, eigenaar van Wims Organic Fine Food. Hij zegt dat het brood een eerlijke prijs heeft. Dit omdat het minstens 36 uur moet rijzen, 2 kilo is en er maar een paar bakkers zijn die dit brood kunnen maken. Steinhauer vertelt dat hij is overdonderd door alle publiciteit van afgelopen dagen. Hij wilde dan ook niet voor camera reageren. Meer dan alleen brood Het dure brood is volgens sommige Amsterdammers meer dan een brood alleen, zo zegt een voorbijganger: "Het is wel een soort lifestyle. Die lifestyle is jezelf tentoonstellen, ik en mijn brood, selfie erbij, klaar. Ik vind het totaal leeg. Als je geld genoeg hebt, moet je het ergens aan uitgeven." Die levensstijl beamen andere voorbijgangers op de markt. "Mensen denken: een huis kopen, gaat me toch niet lukken. Dus is dit een minivakantie die ik wél nu kan hebben. Mensen stoken elkaar ook op via TikTok. Macro- en monetair econoom Joeri Schasfoort vond het idee van eeuwige beursgroei altijd al een beetje gek. Op zijn Youtube-kanaal scheidt hij economische feiten van fictie. Wat blijkt? De zogenaamde Asset Meltdown Hypothesis (AMH) zou wel eens roet in het eten kunnen gooien. Volgens deze theorie zal de verkoop van aandelen en obligaties door een groeiende groep gepensioneerden – gecombineerd met een te kleine jongere generatie om deze over te nemen – leiden tot een structurele daling van beurskoersen, en dus toekomstige pensioeninkomens. Of deze voorspelling werkelijkheid wordt, is de vraag. We gaan naar een situatie die we nog nooit eerder hebben meegemaakt: nooit eerder werden we zo oud en kregen we zo weinig kinderen. Toch zal het lastig zijn onder deze demografische zwaartekracht uit te komen, zegt Schasfoort. Daarvoor is de verandering in onze bevolkingssamenstelling simpelweg te fundamenteel. Tegenkrachten kunnen er zeker zijn - denk bijvoorbeeld aan snelle technologische innovatie of migratie - maar een verkoopggolf van de pensionerende boomergeneratie vormt een structurele neerwaartse kracht waar we serieus rekening mee moeten houden. Lowe resort in the San Gabriel mountains above Altadena, California. Mt. Lowe was once a major tourist destination. The project, led by Thaddeus S.C. Lowe starting in 1893, included a funicular railroad, an electric trolley line, a hotel, an observatory, and other attractions. It was a popular attraction for about four decades until the 1930s. The Mt. Lowe Railway was built in sections, with the first part opening on July 4, 1893. The railway's construction was overseen by Chief Engineer David J. Macpherson for inventor Thaddeus S. C. Lowe. For the seven years during which Lowe owned and operated the railway, it was not financially successful, and was eventually sold. The railway was officially abandoned in 1938 after a flood washed railway property off the mountain sides. 0:00-00:55: This shaky footage was shot by a passenger who is on the funicular, also known as the Great Incline. There are views of Altadena, and at :30 a view of other Incline car as it passes. The Incline is a steep (60% grade) section of the Mt. The small railroad car seen here was what was known as the “One Man and a Mule Railway”. This was a railway built and operated by a man named Ed Tobin. The Silver Fox Farm was owned and operated by Arthur Schleicher from 1920 to 1936. It was the largest in the USA, kenneling over 1,500 animals. Schleicher, from Minnesota, was regarded as the foremost breeder of silver foxes in the 1920’s. A silver fox pelt cost about $250 to $500. A visitor could order a coat from the farm, where the hides would be tanned, cured and fashioned into a garment of the visitor’s choice. De interesse in herbruikbare materialen uit de huizen die binnenkort gesloopt zullen worden voor de heraanleg van de Noord-Zuidverbinding in Houthalen-Helchteren is groot. Alle kijkdagen zijn volledig volgeboekt. Deze voormiddag was de eerste kijkdag. Wie iets interessants ziet, mag dat aangeven en volgende week zelf komen demonteren. De kijkdagen in de huizen aan de Noord-Zuid die binnenkort gesloopt worden, zijn een schot in de roos. Alle geplande kijkdagen zijn volzet. De eerste kijkdag in een 7-tal panden ging vandaag door. Vooral mensen die aan het verbouwen zijn, komen kijken of er nog wat bruikbaar materiaal te vinden is. Wie iets interessants ziet, mag dat aangeven en volgende week zelf komen demonteren. Voor sommige spullen is er een overnamekost, maar heel wat zaken mag je gratis meenemen. Dat wordt volgende week met de geïnteresseerden besproken. In Den Haag in Nederland zijn rellen uitgebroken tijdens een betoging van de extreemrechtse organisatie 'Wij Zijn Het Volk'. De demonstranten zochten de confrontatie met de politie en gooiden vuurwerk, meldt de NOS. Intussen is de rust teruggekeerd. "Er zijn weerzinwekkende extreemrechtse en antisemitische uitingen gescandeerd en Hitlergroeten gebracht", reageert de Nederlandse premier Rob Jetten. De Nederlandse politie moest vanmiddag ingrijpen toen de mars op het punt stond om te vertrekken. Extreemrechtse betogers verzamelden zich op het Malieveld, een groot grasveld in het centrum van de stad, om daarna in stoet door de stad te trekken. Ze zouden betogen tegen de regeringsplannen en vooral tegen immigratie. Maar al snel werd de sfeer grimmig. De betogers, van wie de meesten in het zwart gekleed zijn en sommigen ook gemaskerd, gooiden onder meer vuurwerk en verkeersborden naar de politie. Ze zouden ook antisemitische slogans hebben geroepen. Daarop heeft de burgemeester van Den Haag besloten om de mars door de stad af te gelasten. De demonstratie op het Malieveld mocht aanvankelijk wel nog doorgaan, maar wordt nu ook stopgezet. "De groep wordt gecontroleerd weggeleid. Er is tevens een noodbevel afgevaardigd. De politie mag personen die bijdragen aan wanordelijkheden uit het gebied verwijderen", meldt de gemeente Den Haag op X. Nu de betoging is afgelast, hebben de meeste mensen besloten om naar huis te gaan, zien NOS-reporters ter plaatse. Agenten zijn wel nog op verschillende plekken in de stad alert op eventuele verstoringen. De Verenigde Staten en Denemarken hebben een akkoord gesloten over de veiligheid van Groenland. De overeenkomst houdt rekening met "alle Amerikaanse bezorgdheden", meldt de Amerikaanse president Trump. Er zal meer militaire aanwezigheid komen op het eiland. "Maar Trump heeft niet zo heel veel gewonnen", legt buitenlandjournalist Bert De Vroey uit. "Hij heeft vooral goed nieuws nodig." Het akkoord volgt op een maandenlange dreiging van president Trump om Groenland met geweld in te nemen. Groenland is een autonoom gebied van EU-lidstaat Denemarken. En Denemarken is ook een NAVO-bondgenoot van de Verenigde Staten. Begin dit jaar kwamen in Denemarken nog duizenden mensen op straat uit solidariteit met Groenland. Ook in Groenland werd er gedemonstreerd. De Amerikanen hebben volgens Trump samengewerkt met vertegenwoordigers van Denemarken en Groenland "om te garanderen dat de Verenigde Staten voor altijd de volledige bevoegdheid zullen hebben om in Groenland te doen wat nodig is om de veiligheid van Groenland en de Verenigde Staten te verdedigen". Het kabinet wil geen aangifte doen, en dus doen gedupeerde ouders en ondernemers van de toeslagenaffaire het zelf. Ze willen dat de Rijksrecherche en het Openbaar Ministerie onderzoek doen naar tientallen miljoenen documenten die zijn opgeslagen in een afgeschermde, digitale kluis. De gedupeerden, onder wie de Amsterdamse Gülsah Akpinar, willen weten of ambtenaren van de Belastingdienst bewust informatie hebben achtergehouden. ''Ik hoop dat we erkenning krijgen.'' Dat zegt Gülsah Akpinar, die naast moeder ook eigenaar is van een kinderdagverblijf. Zij wil dat de Rijksrecherche onderzoek doet naar de zogenoemde datakluis, waarin zich miljoenen documenten zouden bevinden. ''Wij hebben een sterk vermoeden dat het is achtergehouden en willen daarom dat het onderzocht wordt.'' Aldus Akpinar. Terugvordering Voor Akpinar begon ''de hel'' in 2012. In één keer moest ze 60.000 euro aan toeslagen terugbetalen. De terugvordering had grote financiële gevolgen voor haar en haar gezin. Als eigenaar van een kinderdagverblijf zag ze ondertussen ook steeds meer klanten in een soortgelijke situatie. ''Vooral Turkse en Marokkaanse ouders kwamen in de problemen nadat hun toeslagen werden teruggevorderd. De Nederlandse ouders kregen deze vorderingen niet.'' Meer ouders willen antwoorden Akpinar is niet de enige die wil weten wat er precies met de documenten in de datakluis is gebeurd. Ook Merijn van Leeuwen, de advocaat die een deel van de gedupeerde ouders bijstaat, vindt dat de datakluis onderzocht moet worden. ''Voor de gedupeerde ouders is het weer een nieuwe klap om te verwerken. Daarom moet het tot op de bodem worden uitgezocht. Een onafhankelijk onderzoek door de rijksrecherche is van groot belang.'' Hoe nu verder? Ondanks de financiële problemen en de gevolgen van de toeslagenaffaire heeft Akpinar inmiddels een doorstart kunnen maken met haar kinderdagverblijf. Akpinar hoopt dat haar eis wordt ingewilligd en dat de documenten daadwerkelijk worden onderzocht. Voor haar zou dat een belangrijke laatste stap zijn in een jarenlang proces. ''Hierna kan ik dit hoofdstuk afsluiten en door met mijn leven.'' De aangifte ligt inmiddels bij de hoofdofficier en binnen drie maanden krijgen de gedupeerde ouders te horen of er een onderzoek plaats gaat vinden. Wie op de Noordermarkt een biologisch bruin emmerbrood wil kopen, moet diep in de buidel tasten. Voor maar liefst 22 euro is dit brood te koop. Ook voor kiembrood wordt met 20 euro een flink bedrag gevraagd. Deze prijzen zorgen voor flinke discussies, zowel online als op straat. "Vind ik totaal belachelijk", laat een voorbijganger weten. Een ander is het ermee eens: "Ik houd echt van zuurdesembrood, maar 20 euro gaat me echt te ver." De prijs van het brood zorgt voor veel reacties.  Aanleiding voor de ophef is een video die op social media verscheen via het account Havermelkelite. In de video wordt het brood getoond, waarna veel mensen online hun verbazing over de prijs uitspreken. Toch is er ook begrip en nuance onder bezoekers van de markt. Zo vertelt een vrouw dat mensen vooral kiezen voor kwaliteit en meer waarde hechten aan producten als ze weten waar het vandaan komt en hoe het is gemaakt. Een koper legt uit dat hij een half brood koop en het heel dun snijdt: "Het kost wat, maar dan heb je ook wat." Eerlijke prijs De verkoper van het brood is Wim Steinhauer, eigenaar van Wims Organic Fine Food, zegt dat het brood een eerlijke prijs heeft. Dit omdat het minstens 36 uur moet rijzen, 2 kilo is en er maar een paar bakkers zijn die dit brood kunnen maken. Steinhauer vertelt dat hij is overdonderd door alle publiciteit van afgelopen dagen. Hij wilde dan ook niet voor camera reageren. Meer dan alleen brood Het dure brood is volgens sommige Amsterdammers meer dan een brood alleen, zo zegt een voorbijganger: "Het is wel een soort lifestyle. Die lifestyle is jezelf tentoonstellen, ik en mijn brood, selfie erbij, klaar. Ik vind het totaal leeg. Als je geld genoeg hebt, moet je het ergens aan uitgeven."  Die levensstijl beamen andere voorbijgangers op de markt. "Mensen denken: een huis kopen, gaat me toch niet lukken. Dus is dit een minivakantie die ik wél nu kan hebben. Mensen stoken elkaar ook op via TikTok. Ze is de oudste vrouwelijke deelneemster, maar zeker niet de minste. Inez de Rooij (80) loopt volgende week zondag de Dam tot Damloop en gaat voor een nieuw persoonlijk record. Vorig jaar was haar tijd 2:13,45. Daar moeten een paar seconden vanaf, vindt ze zelf. Daarom traint de atleet hard: in de sportschool en natuurlijk buiten. "Hardlopen is een lifestyle", vertelt de 80-jarige als we haar opzoeken tijdens een training. "Het is niet meer weg te denken uit mijn leven. Ik heb weleens een blessure en dat is dan weken drama tot ik die korte broek weer aankan en naar buiten kan om hard te lopen." Schop onder de kont Inez deed mee aan meerdere grote hardloopwedstrijden in binnen- en buitenland, zoals de marathon van Rotterdam en Londen. Ze traint vier keer per week, waaronder krachttraining. "Ik voel dat mijn lichaam daardoor veel beter voelt." Inez is vastberaden om zich vast te bijten in haar nieuwe record. Ze houdt haar sporthorloge tijdens de run constant in de gaten. "Als ik ga sloffen, geef ik mezelf even een schop onder de kont. Het allerleukst is altijd om aan het eind nog wat mensen in te halen. Twee films over Charles de Gaulle zijn een enorme hit in Frankrijk. Al 5 miljoen Fransen gingen deze zomer naar de bioscoop.   De Gaulle was president van 1959 tot 1969 en speelde ook een belangrijke rol tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog in de strijd tegen nazi-Duitsland.   De film slaat aan bij jongeren. Om de drukte en overlast in de binnenstad tegen te gaan, gaat de toeristenbelasting in Amsterdam de komende jaren flink omhoog. Van 12,5 procent nu, naar 20 procent in 2031. Daarmee krijgt Amsterdam officieel de hoogste toeristenbelasting ter wereld. Dat geldt automatisch ook voor Weesp, sinds 2022 onderdeel van de gemeente Amsterdam. Op een plek waar je meer koeien dan toeristen ziet, is dat volgens de Weespers onterecht. Albert Hooijer is een melkveehouder uit Weesp. Op het terrein waar hij zijn koeien houdt, runt hij samen met zijn vrouw ook een gastenverblijf, dat ze in het weekend verhuren als groepsaccommodatie, waar je ook kunt slapen. "Ja, dit weekend komt er ook een groep", vertelt Hooijer. Maatwerk voor Weesp Donderdagavond sprak Hooijer in tijdens een commissievergadering in de gemeenteraad. "Wij zijn gewoon niet vergelijkbaar met het centrum van Amsterdam", zegt Hooijer. "Daarom willen we de gemeenteraad vragen om maatwerk met betrekking tot de tarieven van toeristenbelasting mogelijk te maken." Een meerderheid van de gemeenteraad kon zich daar wel in vinden. Zowel oppositie als coalitiepartij Pro. Die partij vroeg verantwoordelijk wethouder Melanie van der Horst om nogmaals te kijken of zo'n uitzonderingspositie mogelijk is voor boerderijen, zoals die van Hooijer. "Ik vind gewoon wel dat we daar echt serieus naar moeten kijken", zei Van der Horst. "Nou heb ik dat de afgelopen tijd echt al wel gedaan en ik krijg daar juridisch gewoon niet zo'n goed antwoord op.
