Theaterfestival De Parade is weer terug in het Martin Luther Kingpark. We kijken mee met de voorstellingen van nieuwkomer Geert Sweep en Ellen ten Damme, die al jaren op De Parade speelt. Zijn debuut voelt als 'een koortsdroom' en gaat over duiven. Ten Damme maakt een 'Oudgriekse meezingshow'. Na afloop van zijn derde voorstelling van de dag, loopt theatermaker Geert Sweep zwetend van het podium af. "Ik denk dat ik na afloop compleet gesloopt, maar ook hartstikke fit ben", lacht hij. Deze week speelt hij gemiddeld drie keer per dag een voorstelling, die hij zelf schreef. Ook maakte hij zelf het decor en kostuums. Het is zijn eerste keer op De Parade. "Gisteren was ik klaar en helemaal gesloopt en toen moest ik huilen van ontlading. Het is zo bijzonder om te doen en al die mensen te zien die komen kijken. Het is een totale overgave aan de mooiste plek op aarde. Maar het is ook een koortsdroom. Je weet niet wat je meemaakt. Maar wel de mooiste koortsdroom die er is." Medusa Ellen ten Damme staat al heel wat jaar op De Parade, dus het enthousiasme van Geert is al iets verder weggezakt. "Het voelt meer als werk", lacht ze. "Ik werk met de teringtyfus. Maar het is leuk." Haar voorstelling heet Club Medusa, een meezingshow met hier en daar wat Oudgrieks. "Ik heb Oudgriekse teksten uitgezocht en verwerkt in nieuwe liedjes en ik vind het heel grappig om dat als een meezinger te presenteren." De Parade is nog tot en met 9 augustus te bezoeken in het Martin Luther Kingpark. Once it arrives there, the ship is seized by the Royal Navy. The film documents a pivotal movement in the history of the state of Israel. In the aftermath of the Holocaust, survivors were evacuated to Palestine, even though the British did not want them to migrate. Here, hundreds of refugees -- some of them apparently survivors of Buchenwald -- are shown crammed aboard a ship dubbed "SS Unafraid". The ship sails across the Mediterranean but is soon spotted by British aircraft, and then escorted by a small flotilla of Royal Navy ships. Soon, a destroyer draws alongside and offloads a prize crew. The ship is then deviated to the harbor at Haifa, where its occupants will likely face deportation to an internment camp in Cyprus. The film begins with shots of a man with field glasses searching the horizon, and other refugees aboard the ship looking out from the ship's rail. Announcement are made (:52) aboard the ship and those who were huddled below decks allowed to come out for air. A British destroyer is visible (1:22). Various shots of refugees, some of them apparently quite seasick, follow. At (2;24) the destroyer is shown again. At (2:45), the assembled crowd begins to fashion banners and an Israeli flag is hoisted at (3:04) and the crowd stands at attention as it rises to the mast top. At (3:44) another flag is hoisted on the ship's fantail and the crowd sings what will soon be the national anthem. At 4:31 a banner reads "Haganah Ship Unafraid". At (4:47), a fake sign used as a disguise, marked Karaco Adalia, is removed from the stern of the ship and thrown overboard. At (4:58) the British destroyer looms large. At (5:12) a woman is shown in labor aboard ship. At (5:23) the baby is delivered and the mother is shown post-partum. At (5:51) more shots of the destroyer escort. At (6:20), another shot of the banner "Hagana Ship Unafraid" is seen. At (6:30) British sailors board the ship from the destroyer, which has now come alongside the refugee boat. At (7:17) a signalman uses flags to communicate with the destroyer crew. At (7:26) a large banner is unfurled reading "Open the door Bevin... your Tommies want to get out and we are coming." (This refers to Ernest Bevin a British statesman, trade union leader and Labour Party politician who was Foreign Secretary when the Palestinian Mandate ended. He played an important role in the end of the Mandate of Palestine and was strongly opposed to the establishment of the State of Israel.) At (7:36) British sailors are seen aboard the ship, which has now apparently reached the docks at Haifa. At (8:50) a mother nurses her young baby. The End (9:25). Night-time shots of refugees with large packs boarding rubber boats. Crowded onto deck, rushing into hold and covering selves with tarpaulin when British airplane flies overhead. Airplane is an RAF : Lancaster. British warship (destroyer) sited, Brits jump from their decks to refugee ship. English and Hebrew sign "Haganah Ship Unafraid" and "Jewish" flag raised. De Amsterdamse ontwerper Joost Grootens is uit 1200 inzendingen gekozen tot een van de 10 finalisten om de nieuwe ontwerper van het eurobiljet te worden. Zijn favoriete biljet is het vijf eurobriefje met Maria Callas, vertelt hij in zijn kantoor op Groenhoedenveem in het Oostelijk Havengebied. Eigenlijk is Joost Grootens boekenmaker - hij ontwierp atlassen, bijbels en woordenboeken - maar toen hij vorig jaar op de prijsvraag stuitte om de nieuwe eurobiljetten te ontwerpen, besloot hij het gewoon te proberen. "Ik had niet gedacht dat zo'n klein object zoveel lastigheden in zich had." Zo moet je de waarde van het biljet altijd kunnen zien, ook als je hem dubbelvouwt. En dan stelde de Europese Centrale Bank ook nog allerlei veiligheidseisen, zoals een watermerk, een tactiele laag en een metallic strip. Op vakantie in Seoul kreeg hij een mailtje met een link naar een online vergadering. "Wat aardig dat ze iedereen persoonlijk afwijzen, dacht ik. Maar toen ik het opende, zaten er vijf mensen in een zaal in Frankfurt. Hier was misschien toch wat anders aan de hand." Het is voor het eerst in twintig jaar dat de euro een ander uiterlijk krijgt. Dat is vooral om te voorkomen dat geldvervalsers te goed worden in hun werk. Ook krijgen de biljetten extra beveiliging. Er zijn tien ontwerpen geselecteerd in twee categorieën: vogels en Europese iconen. Het werk van Grootens is geselecteerd in die laatste categorie. "Ik heb er geen helden van willen maken, maar ze menselijk laten zijn. Ik wil dat ze van nu zijn, gewoon als mens." Zo draagt Leonardo da Vinci op zijn honderd euro geen beroemde hoed, noch baard. "Het gaat om de ogen." En op zijn blauwe briefje van twintig prijkt Marie Curie. "Ik vind deze heel mooi, omdat je ziet dat het een oude vrouw is, met rimpels." Europeanen krijgen tot 21 september de tijd om te stemmen op hun favoriete ontwerp. Naar verwachting komen de nieuwe briefjes in 2030 in omloop.
