Your country probably just got bigger or smaller… at least on the UN world map. Here’s why ☝️ 🗺️ Early September, the United Nations adopted a resolution to start favouring a new world map, the so-called Equal Earth projection. Today, the most commonly used map is probably the Mercator projection, which was developed by a Flemish cartographer in the 1500s. It’s the one you find in textbooks, wallpapers and even on Google Maps. 🫠 The only issue: it distorts areas so that countries far from the Equator look much bigger (and, some have argued, more symbolically important) than they actually are. Conversely, South America and especially the African continent are significantly downsized. As experts and activists have been pushing for a new world map to be adopted for years, they even coined a term for this: “cartographic colonialism”. ‼️ By the way, the UN resolution doesn’t ban other maps from being used. The symposium brought together journalists, scholars, lawyers and activists to explore the legacy of the "war on terror," specifically focused on the impact on democratic rights, including the freedoms of speech and the press. First Amendment freedoms "were tested right away in the days and weeks after 9/11," says Jameel Jaffer, legal expert and director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University. "All of the surveillance authorities that were put in place after 9/11," says Jaffer, "their use was initially justified by reference to foreign threats. And now, increasingly, we're seeing the Trump administration use these things to suppress domestic dissent." "If you go back to that climate after 9/11 … newsrooms institute[d] shifts, so they started making beats for covering national security," says Azmat Khan of the Columbia Journalism School, who won a Pulitzer Prize for exposing the massive civilian death toll from U.S.-led airstrikes in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. "Legacy news media in that time period was incredibly dependent on anonymous sources, sometimes unvetted intelligence, leaks to journalists that oftentimes came from an administration that was trying to lead the public to war." Around 3,000 people were killed that day, and nearly 10,000 more have died in the years since from 9/11-related illnesses connected to the collapse of the twin towers. In 2001, Democracy Now! was a radio show broadcasting from the attic of Downtown Community Television in Chinatown, just blocks away from ground zero. We were the closest national broadcast to the World Trade Center site. We were on the air when the second plane hit the south tower. Today, we reair a clip of that broadcast and hear Democracy Now! co-host Juan González read the column he wrote for the _New York Daily News_ in the hours after the attack, "A Horror to Last a Lifetime." Roger Federer, een van de beste tennissers aller tijden, was deze week heel even in Amsterdam. De Zwitser organiseerde gisteren een clinic in het Olympisch Stadion waarbij hij tenniste met kinderen. En aan de kant vergaapten veel bewonderaars zich aan een van de beste tennissers ooit. Of Federer het hier naar zijn zin heeft? "Het is een geweldige stad, leuke mensen. Iedereen is energiek, zelfs met dit slechte weer. Is het echt altijd zo grijs hier?" Federer organiseert dit soort clinics vaker. Sinds hij stopte met tennissen, reisde hij hiervoor al af naar Shanghai, Parijs en New York. "Toen ik nog speelde, wist ik dat het op een gegeven moment op zou houden. Ik dacht na over wat ik nou eigenlijk leuk vond. Voor muziek, kunst, eten en reizen heb ik altijd een passie gehad. En dat wilde ik combineren met het tennissen met kinderen; ze begeleiden, inspireren en motiveren. Dat is echt heel leuk om te doen." Reizen deed Federer tijdens zijn carrière genoeg, maar veel tijd om iets van de steden te zien waar hij kwam, had hij eigenlijk nooit. Bijna altijd moest er gepresteerd worden. Een bestuurster van een mini-auto is vanavond in de Lijnbaansgracht beland. Ze stond ongedeerd op de kant toen de hulpdiensten arriveerden. Toen de brandweer het wagentje op de kant zette, klonk er een luid applaus van omstanders. De melding kwam om 19.00 uur binnen bij de politie, brandweer en ambulance. Hoe het wagentje in het water is beland is nog niet bekend. Op foto's is te zien dat de bestuurster van de mini-auto met een natte broek en een geleende jas van de brandweer op de kant staat. Uiteindelijk kon de mini-auto met behulp van een duikeenheid van de brandweer uit het water getakeld worden.
