A teacher shortage is gripping Europe. But how did it get this bad?! Especially in Hungary, where even the school kids are on strike because of terrible conditions and pay for their teachers. And it goes way deeper than that: teachers in Budapest told us how the government has long been telling teachers what they can and can’t teach in schools. Now, it’s cooking up a new law to allow spying on teachers via their school computers. It couldn’t be more different in Finland: we asked teachers how the school system became a world-beater. In our series of explanations "Done Differently" we take a look at how current topics that move you are discussed elsewhere. We welcome feedback below the video. Should psychedelics be legal? Subscribe for optimistic tech and science stories! You might be hearing about states and countries legalizing psychedelics. In 2020, Oregon became the first US state to decriminalize psilocybin and legalize it for therapeutic use. In 2022, Colorado followed suit. Researchers have recently been touting the benefits of psychedelics for health conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction, cancer-related distress, and the list goes on. However - like cannabis - psilocybin is still illegal under US federal law. Given that ongoing fight, you might have questions. I know I do. Are psychedelics the next weed? Is that a good thing? Are psychedelics dangerous? Do they actually have scientific benefits? How do psychedelics work? In this episode of Huge If True, we find out. Australia could make a real difference to world diplomacy and peace by pivoting from Washington (USA) to Delhi (India). PM of Australia called PM Modi, 'The Boss.' But India is also the voice of the global South, and even an emerging leader of the truly free and fair world. This edited highlights from my livestream of 30 May 2023 presents a 10-point plan for Australia (and Western countries other than USA) to pivot their foreign policy to India, and get behind the dramatic shift to a multipolar world. Key proposals include relocating the HQ and agencies of the United Nations from the USA to India. After all India has a better track record of promoting peace than the USA with its endless wars. And India is the mother of democracy and custodian of many traditions of peace, dialogue, cultural diversity and responsible statecraft. Do you think the United Nations should be relocated from the USA to India. Watch the whole video, make up your mind, and leave a comment below. Join me for this live stream on 30 May 2023 at 4.30 om Australian Eastern Standard Time and 12 noon New Delhi Time. During Prime Minister Modi's visit to Australia, Australian Prime Minister Albanese described the Indian PM as "The Boss." Has India truly become the leader not only of the Global South, but of the free and fair world? But can Australia pivot away from its subservience to Washington? I will how Australia could take a lead from India in setting a foreign policy suited to the realities of the multipolar world. I will discuss themes of my recent podcasts on Indian history, democracy, diplomacy and growing soft power. And I will take your questions and learn from your comments. What does Australia need to do to be taken seriously by India?

Not so long ago, the term “green politics” had a much more radical meaning, and a vote for a Green party was a vote for climate justice. Green parties have benefitted politically from the impact of growing movements like Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion. They have entered government in countries like Germany and Austria, partnering with far-right parties in the process. In Germany, they are razing villages to open the way for new coal mining, while the world is careening towards the crucial 1.5 °C mark in the average global temperature rise. And when it comes to world affairs, while previously firmly anti-war, some are now taking pro-war stances. In addition to this, terms like “green” and “sustainable” are being coopted by politicians and corporations alike (with the EU’s recent Beyond Growth Conference providing some fresh examples). The center of every sacred mystery, the Temple at Jerusalem is the most famous building on earth, even though it has not existed for almost 2000 years and no one knows precisely what it looked like. We join with Michael of “Xai, How Are You” to discuss Solomon’s Temple – both the real historical building as it can be reconstructed from ancient texts and archaeology, and the symbol that has been endlessly appropriated to represent humankind’s relationship to the cosmos, from Jewish mysticism, to Christian theology, to early Islam, to medieval magic, to Renaissance humanism, to the rituals of Freemasonry, to modern Jewish and evangelical fundamentalism. Suggested further reading: Hamblin & Seely, “Solomon’s Temple: Myth and History” Image: page of the "Perpignan Bible," France, 1299, depicting ritual objects in the Temple, including the Menorah My previous lectures on Freemasonry: https://soundcloud.com/historiansplaining/the-freemasonry-its-origins-its-myths-and-its-rituals https://soundcloud.com/historiansplaining/freemasonry-its-growth-and-spread-before-1789 Correction: There is archaeological and textual evidence for two Israelite temples in Egypt -- one at Leontopolis in the Nile delta, and one at Elephantine in Upper Egypt. ClassicalGuitarShed.com can help you on the journey. If you want to rise to new levels in your playing, it just takes time and strategic work. To play classical guitar well, you need to know: * how to hold and touch the guitar - form and positioning * how to move your fingers and hands - efficient, clean, and fluid * how to learn pieces - reading music, understanding what you see, ingraining, polishing * how to craft the music so it is beautiful - swells and fades, rhythm, touch * how to practice so all these skills improve over time and don't go away At the root of beautiful playing is a solid technique (aka “the way your hands move”). You may have beautiful music in your head, but if your hands can't play it, it won't come out of the guitar. But bad technique puts a limit on your playing. Speed, tone quality, and control can suffer. Good technique gets stronger and more instinctive with every practice. It forms the bedrock foundation for your music. And you may want to understand music so you learn it more easily and it makes more sense. This can help you avoid the excess frustration and dismay that comes with shoddy practice and prolonged confusion. But playing the notes is not enough. Like an actor bring words to life, we breathe life into our pieces. And we can do this in an organized way, day in and day out, reliably. Great musicians can play wonderfully in any mood. They do not rely on emotions. Instead, they create music that affects our emotions. This is a trained skill, not an inborn talent. Playing classical guitar is a long-term study. It's something we do in our homes as part of our days. We play for ourselves, for the quality it adds to life. We may enjoy playing guitar for others, but most of the time we are alone with our work. There are methods and formulas for great practice. We can use our time well so that see more progress. We can fix the problems and erase the mistakes. And we can enjoy conquering the plentiful challenges that classical guitar music offers. If you plan to play classical guitar for any length of time, it is worth it to get help. It's not something we can do on our own, like folk music. I have a structured and organized course to help you play classical guitar. If you like, you can learn more here: https://classicalguitarshed.com/membership/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=Sor_Op_35_Etude_No_22_Free_Classical_Guitar_Sheet_Music&utm_content=KjIlHt57Zgs If you would like to hear me (Allen Mathews) playing, visit my other youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/allenmathews/

Unlocked after one year for patrons only: One moonlit night in 1853, an Iraqi excavator named Hormuzd Rassam and his team snuck into the hills outside of Mosul and began to uncover the massive palace of the last ancient Assyrian emperor, Ashurbanipal. Inside the palace was the largest trove of surviving documents from the ancient world that has ever been found. The massive library of over 30,000 tablets illuminated what had been the most mysterious empire of the Iron Age, brought to light the ancient masterpiece of the Epic of Gilgamesh, and provided the first window into the lost Near Eastern mythology that influenced the Biblical book of Genesis. While the discovery provided the greatest triumph of British imperial antiquarianism, in recent times Saddam Hussein and other Arab nationalists have attempted to reclaim its legacy by building a modern Library of Ashurbanipal. Suggested further reading: Damrosch, "The Buried Book." A video that can help you better understand engine balance and the difference between flat boxer and flat non-boxer engines: https://youtu.be/TQlyS2rw-sk Last week I made a video explaining scotch yoke engines and I did a bit of an update on Alfadan, the company that is planning to release a scotch yoke inline four engine in the future. But after making the video I was still thinking a bit about the scotch yoke design and it’s related balance so I decided to do some research. Now on the Wikipedia page for scotch yoke I found this interesting chunk of text that mentions the Bourke engine as well hot air and steam engines, that’s all pretty well known stuff. But what I never heard about before is this, something called the sytech engine. And as you can see this is not hyperlinked…there’s no wiki page on sytech engine. So I google sytech engine and eventually ended up on this page right here, and boy was I surprised. Look! This is not a 3d render. This is a photo of an actual engine. This thing is real. And it’s incredibly interesting. Now before we go any further, I just want to say that this is not in any way a sponsored video. I have not even gotten in touch with this company. I’m not promoting anything. This is just me exploring and sharing something really really interesting that I found purely by chance. And as you will see I didn't need to get in touch with these guys because all the information you could possibly want, they have already published it, they have done all the testing, this is pretty much a production ready engine. Honestly this whole page really made my day as it’s been a long time that I stumbled onto something this new and this interesting. Look, they even made a flat 8-cylinder non-boxer scotch yoke engine And as you can see the engine in this video is a scotch yoke flat four non-boxer opposed piston engine, which interestingly enough is a completely different approach to Alfadan which aims to make a inline four scotch yoke engine. Now this is extremely interesting because a flat four non-boxer engine is a stupid idea from the perspective of engine balance. Now as you have seen from my previous video the scotch yoke design completely eliminates secondary balance issues which means that a four cylinder now becomes the lowest number of cylinder needed to achieve perfect balance without balance shafts, whereas with a conventional crank and rod the lowest number of cylinders needed to achieve this is 6. A scotch yoke inline four has perfect primary and secondary balance. But a flat four non-boxer does not, regardless if it’s scotch yoke or not. The four cylinder scotch yoke engine is supposed to be a range extender and when you take this into account the flat four non-boxer configuration really starts making sense because this is overall the most compact possible four cylinder engine configuration. And if we scroll down to the bottom of the website we can find three very interesting PDFs. If we open the first one we will find an incredible wealth of data among which is also this page. And here you can see that a very compact flat four engine enables placement almost anywhere in the car or in the words of sytech “the engine can be placed in areas of the vehicle that other engines cannot”. As you can see a flat four scotch yoke beats other four cylinders in terms of size. In the boxer each rod gets its own crankpin but in the flat engine we put two rods on one crank pin. This is why a flat non-boxer engine is noticeably shorter than a flat boxer engine. But the scotch yoke design takes this a step further. In conventional flat non boxer we have to stack the rods side by side but in a scotch yoke the engine is constructed in such a way that the pistons are perfectly opposed which means that a scotch yoke flat four can be shorter than any conventional four cylinder engine configuration. Another interesting thing to observe Is that this is a modular engine. According to this Sytech is planning to offer a 2 a 4 and an 8 cylinder version. Modularity means high parts commonality and this means reduced costs and increased market coverage. The 2 cylinder version can for example be used for home generators, the four cylinder is a great range extender whereas the 8 cylinder is likely intended for performance oriented combustion only or hybrid vehicles. I have to say that the 8 cylinder is extremely interesting as this is a true engine-head configuration. I’m pretty sure they went for 8 cylinders because this configuration enables perfect balance out of the box without balancing shafts. Judging from the engine codes the 8 cylinder is a 3.0 liter engine and in turbocharged form it churns out 335 horsepower which isn’t especially impressive by modern standards but it’s still definitely respectable. If the version shown isn't obvious it should be indicated in brackets but usually what's shown should correlate to what I'm saying (the arcade version is used in arcade sections, console is console sections etc.). - The date refers to the first release (often Japanese) of that version of the game. For console games this means the console release, not any earlier arcade release date. - The name of the developer is used rather than publisher, but in-house first party studios are usually shortened/simplified. For example Nintendo R&D1 is listed as just Nintendo, Square Enix Business Division 2 would be listed as Square Enix. Etc. - Footage from remasters and remakes was (mostly) avoided but lots of what's shown is original games emulated at a higher resolution than the original console. This makes some games look better than they really were, but older games also benefited greatly from being shown on CRT displays so I think this sort of balances out. Regardless, I tried to strike a balance between authenticity and visual quality but don't take what you see as absolute gospel. - I'm sure there are typos somewhere but it is what it is. Typos aren't so bad, they just remind you this was made by a human. A rather tired human. patreon - https://www.patreon.com/NeverKnowsBestYoutube

Flechettes (French for "small arrows") are fin-stabilized projectiles originally developed in the 1910s to be dropped from aircraft, but which have since been adapted to a variety of weapons systems, from artillery shells and air-launched rockets to shotguns and infantry rifles. In this video, we look at a Vietnam War-era "Lazy Dog" antipersonnel flechette and a pair of tungsten armour-piercing flechettes from a CRV7 unguided rocket and discuss the long and fascinating history of this unusual weapon.
