The Nobel Prize in physics in 2022 went to scientists who, for over 40 years, have carried out a series of experiments indicating that, contrary to materialist expectations, physical entities do not have standalone existence but are, in fact, products of observation. This result is extraordinarily relevant to our understanding of the nature of reality, and so Essentia Foundation, in collaboration with the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information, Vienna, of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (home to Prof. Anton Zeilinger, one of 2022's Nobel Laureates in physics), organized a conference discussing the implications of this result. The conference was hosted by IQOQI-Vienna’s Dr. Markus Müller and featured seven other speakers. In this presentation, Dr. Lorenzo Catani argues that interference phenomena, such as observed in the famous double-slit experiment, in fact do not capture the essence of quantum theory. Russian Sanctions have not worked. This is the latest assessment from Robin Brooks, the chief economist at the IFF. But Russian sanctions have now caused another major problem, the world is moving away from the US dollar. Scared of US sanctions, many countries are looking for other currencies and the BRICS network could create a new currency backed by gold that could challenge the dollar and become a dominant world currency. Back in Spring of 2015 Christian von Koenigsegg told reporters that Freevalve technology is "getting ready for fruition". In November 2016, Chinese automobile manufacturer Qoros Auto displayed the Qoros 3 hatchback at the 2016 Guangzhou Motor Show. This car featured a camless “Qamfreee” engine using freevalve technology. The Qoros3 never left the concept stage and never became a mass production reality. In 2020 The Koenigsegg Gemera was unveiled. It featured a 2.0 liter inline three cylinder engine with freevalve that makes 600 horsepower. Production of the Gemera was supposed to begin in 2021. The date has since been moved to 2024. So it has been 8 years since the announcement of Freevalve but it seems that today in 2023 we are no closer to this technology being reality than we were back in 2015. Why is that? Well, that’s exactly what I will attempt to answer in this video and more importantly I will also explain why freevalve isn’t as big of a deal as it initially seems and why it’s possible that this technology will never become mainstream mass production reality. Don’t get me wrong. Freevalve is incredibly cool and I would love to see it become reality and I would love to own a vehicle with freevalve, but unfortunately the common sense realist inside me is skeptical and to explain the reasons behind my skepticism we first have to understand why freevalve is touted as a revolutionary technology that can dramatically improve engines. As you probably know valves let fresh air in and exhaust out of the engine. And the camshaft is the physical metal “programing” of those valves. The camshaft determines when, how much and how long the valves open. The problem with a traditional fixed valve timing is that our “programing” always stay the same. Once the camshaft is ground everything is 100% fixed throughout the entire rpm range of the engine. So let’s imagine that we have to choose a camshaft for an engine and let’s imagine that we want to extract maximum performance from our engine. So we choose a camshaft with very high lift and very high duration. This let’s in a lot of air into the engine we then add lots of fuel and produce powerful and fast combustion and make big power. But we pay a very high price for this. At low rpm our vehicle feels sluggish and unresponsive and our idle is unstable and produces high emissions. The reason behind this is that low rpm means low piston speeds. And low piston speeds means low air velocity. Low air velocity means poor air and fuel mixing. Poor air and fuel mixing means poor combustion. Poor combustion means reduced torque. Now the key thing here is that air velocity and air quantity sort of work against each other. If you have a large opening or cross-section you can have high air flow quantity but the larger your cross section the lower your air velocity. So at low rpm what we actually want to do is open the valve less in order to reduce our cross-section and increase air velocity in order to improve air fuel mixing and restore some low torque rpm. But of course if we reduce lift we reduce our maximum potential performance. For now we will ignore the fact that high lift creates added strain on the valve train and can cause valve float. So how do we fix this? It’s actually pretty easy and straightforward. Get rid of the fixed metal programming and introduce infinitely variable programming. Get rid of the camshaft and instead create an individual high-tech solenoid for each valve. No longer is the valve opening speed a slave to the piston speed and the camshaft lobe shape. The valve now opens near instantly. It remains open as much and as long as you want whenever you want. Your only real constraint now is to avoid hitting the piston. Everything else is infinitely variable and more importantly it’s variable completely independently from each other. The end result is that you can have it all. Dramatic high rpm performance as well as low emissions and high torque and responsiveness at low rpm and low throttle openings. Throttle? What am I saying, if we can infinitely vary the valve opening we can use the valves to decide how much air comes into the engine, we don’t even need a throttle anymore. By getting rid of the throttle we improve efficiency by getting rid of the pumping losses. What are pumping losses? Try breathing through a straw. That’s exactly what the engine is doing when it’s trying to ingest air through a tiny orifice provided by a throttle butterfly that is only slightly open. So Freevalve is obviously amazing. Why then am I saying how it’s not a big deal? It’s not a big deal because what I just did is compare freevalve to a fixed valve timing engine. And this is also what freevalve has been doing themselves. Wire recorders were the original magnetic recording technology, predating the modern tape recorder by 50 years. Instead of a coated plastic tape, they encoded audio magnetically on a thin steel wire. Their heyday was brief, lasting from 1945-1955 - after which the technology was superseded (except in specialized applications) by magnetic tape. Legendary corporate raider and activist Carl Icahn found himself on the wrong side of a familiar battle this week when the short selling investment firm Hindenburg Research took aim at Icahn’s publicly traded holding company, alleging in a new report that Icahn Enterprises L.P. (IEP) is overstating the value of its private asset portfolio, and that its publicly traded stock units–85% of which Icahn owns–are “significantly overvalued.” Icahn’s fortune fell over 35%, from $18.3 billion on Monday afternoon to $12 billion as of Tuesday’s market close. Icahn Enterprises units tumbled 20% on Tuesday, shaving $3 billion in market value off Icahn’s fortune. Forbes then trimmed Icahn’s estimated net worth by another $3.6 billion, after it was revealed that Icahn had pledged over half of his IEP shares as collateral against unknown personal debts. Hindenburg is a short selling activist hedge fund run by Nate Anderson who is most famous for having released a video of Nikola’s electric truck prototype being towed up a hill in order to be pushed down to make a promotional video showing that the technology was fully operational. He claims that Icahn Enterprises has a Ponzi-like economic structure. MadRasana Tinge is a collection of concerts that were recorded during the pandemic. Each concert is based on a specific color, and the artists perform the entire concert based on their interpretation of that color. In addition, we brought in Vinay Varanasi to compose a pallavi for each color to represent it further. Due to pandemic restrictions, we were not able to have a live audience. Inspired by a classical Spanish show, we decided to use live plants in place of the audience. To reduce the environmental impact, we made the entire production carbon-neutral by planting trees to offset the electricity used during the shoot. This is the third concert in the series, and it focuses on the color Blue. Vinay Varanasi will introduce the concert and provide context about the songs that will be performed, as well as explaining why they were chosen to represent this color. He will also discuss the thought process behind the pallavi that he composed. If you like our content, you can support us by contributing small amounts. The last three years of the pandemic have strained the mental health of all and tested the mental health of our democracies, perhaps beyond breaking point. The Greco-Persian wars are some of the most famous battles in history. The 300 Spartans at Thermopylae. The Greek phalanx at Marathon. The naval victory at Salamis. The end result? Athenian domination of the eastern Mediterranean, and the end of Persian aspirations to control Greece. But the failed invasion attempt by Persia wasn't entirely unsuccessful. While they didn't politically conquer Greece, culturally they were far more successful. Join curator Jamie Fraser as he walks you through the Persian way of drinking wine with an Achaemenid rhyton, and how this _very_ eastern way of drinking made it's way into the Athenian symposium (albeit in a different physical form). Luxury and power: Persia to Greece 4 May 2023 - 13 Aug 2023 BOOK TICKETS: https://bit.ly/3p5EgYU Supported by American Friends of the British Museum BullionVault CONTENT WARNING: Contains one _most_ verile, manly, strapping, young servant. #curatorscorner #greece #persia

We are taught that competition is the key driver of evolutionary change in animals. But cooperation is key to the success of many species, including humans – the ultra-cooperative species. Many of the behaviours we consider to be unique – like tool use and language are shared by many other animals. But humans have achieved a complexity that far surpasses any animal through pushing the cooperative boundaries past family groups and towards a truly global network. What brought us to this point? Watch the first episode of the Human Animal documentary series here: https://youtu.be/gb_tRFZ9Tu0 -- Welcome to the official Get.factual youtube channel! 🌍 We are a documentary streaming channel covering history, science, technology, and nature. Get a free bag of fresh coffee with any Trade subscription at https://drinktrade.com/stewarthicks EV Charging stations are not great places to be these days. They're often stuck in some corner of an anonymous parking lot somewhere, lacking any distinct qualities. They are certainly not places you want to spend 30 minutes. But the success of EVs will, in some part, rely on making the charging experience less terrible. And, wouldn't it be great if EV stations could contribute to the beauty of the built environment beyond just their practical use? This video discusses why EV charging stations are not yet good architecturally and points toward a direction for how to fix it. __Membership__ Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYAm24PkejQR2xMgJgn7xwg/join __About the Channel__ Architecture with Stewart is a YouTube journey exploring architecture’s deep and enduring stories in all their bewildering glory. Making a folding wooden chair without plans. The first 1,000 people to use the link will get a 1 month free trial of Skillshare: https://skl.sh/makesomething04231 At the Goodwill I stumbled upon an adorable wooden chair designed for kids. Its folding mechanism was so intriguing that I decided to combine it with the classic Trieste wooden chair's design to create something distinctive. Chairs are inherently challenging to design because they require a balance between form and function. However, drawing inspiration from both chairs, I was able to use a blend of calculated guesses and serendipity to craft a sleek and contemporary folding chair.
