When we're practicing, it's very tempting to sit around playing pieces. After all, this is why we wanted to learn guitar. We want to play beautiful music. But we're not building up our skill set that way. We're not getting better. Our practice will be more productive if we include lots of skills-building exercises too. We can use scales, patterns, or slur exercises for instance. In fact, we should incorporate any technical exercises that will stretch us a little bit. Then we can take these enhanced skills forward to the next piece, and the next. This can help you avoid the excess frustration and dismay that comes with shoddy practice and prolonged confusion. But playing the notes is not enough. Like an actor bring words to life, we breathe life into our pieces. And we can do this in an organized way, day in and day out, reliably. Great musicians can play wonderfully in any mood. They do not rely on emotions. Instead, they create music that affects our emotions. This is a trained skill, not an inborn talent. Playing classical guitar is a long-term study. It's something we do in our homes as part of our days. We play for ourselves, for the quality it adds to life. We may enjoy playing guitar for others, but most of the time we are alone with our work. There are methods and formulas for great practice. We can use our time well so that see more progress. We can fix the problems and erase the mistakes. And we can enjoy conquering the plentiful challenges that classical guitar music offers. If you plan to play classical guitar for any length of time, it is worth it to get help. In October 1914, barely a month after the outbreak of the First World War, Princess Mary, daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, established a public fund to send every member of the British Empire Armed Forces a Christmas Gift. The gift took the form of a stamped brass box filled with tobacco, candy, Christmas cards and other assorted items, over 2 million of which were distributed between 1914 and 1920. I went into this woodworking project confident that this cabinet would come out pretty good but I had no idea it would come out as good as it did. There is a sweet spot to aim for when you practice your guitar. It's the spot between where the work is hard, and where the work is too hard. To make your practice count, you want to find the zone where the chosen activity is hard enough to challenge your existing skills, but not so hard that you give up. If we're sitting in our comfort zone, we're not improving. If the work is too easy, we can get bored. If it's too hard, we'll get demotivated. But a challenge makes us grow. So we should push the boundaries in every practice. Ride the edge.
