Here's the secret to getting a clean full barre chord. Don't just press your finger down flat on the strings. To avoid string buzz, place your barring finger directly over the fretwire, and then roll it backwards onto the fret. The twist will tighten the skin, and the back pressure will make it easier to hold down the guitar strings. So when you're practicing your barre chords, give them a bit of torque. You'll use less tension, and you'll get clearer notes. #classicalguitarshed #guitar #classicalguitar #music #guitartips #guitarlife #guitarlove #learnguitar #guitarplayer #dontfret #guitarmastery #easyguitar #guitarenjoyment #adultbeginner #guitarmindset #underpressure #backpressure #barrechords #barresecrets #perfectbarchords #practice

Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould investigate the origins of two paintings by unknown artists dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, which unusually for the period, depict black subjects. One is a portrait of Dido Belle, a famous former slave adopted into an aristocratic English family in the 1760s, while the other depicts two children against a tropical landscape, and is believed to have been painted as a protest against the slave trade. First introduced at the 1939 New York World's Fair by Sawyer's Inc. of Portland, Oregon, the Viewmaster was the last widely popular iteration of the stereoscope, and quickly became one of the 20th Century's most recognizable toys. In addition to the classic viewers and reels, Sawyer's also produced a line of home projectors as well as cameras and other equipment for making one's own Viewmaster reels at home. Correction to what I say at 11:53 -- I was referring to Milgram's famous experiments in which people administered electroshocks to others when ordered so. It had nothing to do with prisons. The prison experiment was from Philip Zimbardo, not Milgram. Sorry about that. When we come together in groups we can be so much more than the sum of the parts. But sometimes groups are just much more stupid. Collective stupidity is the flipside of collective intelligence, and we see it a lot on social media. Do you ever wonder how lasers work? What makes them different from other sources of light? The answer "stimulated emission" is frequently given, but even more important is achieving "population inversion". In this video I try to explain both, starting from ground level (no pun intended). Specifically, I describe the functionality of my cnc CO2 laser cutter. I also show off a woodblock printing I made using that laser cutter, replicating the graphics from the opening of The Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker. Using watercolor paper, tea, acrylic paint, and water-soluble printing ink, I recreate the prologue for the game. Many guitarists play their pieces beautifully in the practice room, but make mistakes when they play in public. So what's going on? It's often down to inconsistent fingering. How many of us write our fingerings on the music? And how much of that is right-hand fingering? It's easy for players to forget about their right hand. It seems to work automatically. And yet often, it's the right hand that trips us up. Not learning the fingering is a common trap to fall into. But if we consciously choose the most logical fingering, write it in the music, and then practice it consistently, we'll achieve smoother, more musical playing. #classicalguitarshed #guitar #classicalguitar #music #guitartips #guitarlife #guitarlove #learnguitar #guitarplayer #dontfret #guitarmastery #easyguitar #guitarenjoyment #adultbeginner #guitarmindset #practice #problemsolving #solvingproblems #fingering #righthandfingering #dontignoretherighthand #inconsistentfingering

How healthy is Western democracy? And what can the West, especially America, learn from the feedback the world is giving to the West about the democracy it exports to the world and the democracy it runs at home. This week, leaders from China, Mexico, Zambia and Western countries have all raised concerns about the state of democracy in the West. Should we have a conversation about it? This episode discusses: - a pulse test of Western democracy looking at events in Australia, France and the USA, and a survey of satisfaction with democracy in 17 Western countries - the Chinese Foreign Ministry paper, "The State of Democracy in America: 2022" - the Chinese political thinker, Meng Zi (or Mencius), and how his ideas inform both Chinese and Western style democracy Full details about the material referred to during this show can be obtained from my free weekly newsletter that you can subscribe to at jeffrich.substack.com.

50 years ago, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission drafted a set of (well meaning) regulations concerning bicycles. As a result, we are required to sell "sidewalk bicycles" with foot brakes, otherwise known as "coaster brakes". While this only applies to the smallest bicycles, it does limit our choices, and seriously limits how smaller mountain bikes can be engineered. Today we'll talk about this law and what it means. Here's how to play a finger pattern that every guitarist should know. It's one of the 5 basic scale shapes. The D shape major scale pattern. As you can hear, it's not necessarily the scale of D major. The name comes from the fact that the common D chord shape is hidden within it. But the whole pattern can be moved up and down the fingerboard to play major scales in different keys. Put this in your practice routine to increase speed and finger independence. Put this in your practice routine to increase speed and finger independence. Episode 2 of "Secrets of the Night" is devoted to humans and deals with the day-night rhythm that determines us and many living things. However, the triumphal march of light changed our relationship to night, just like our cities, the economy and our life itself. Studies have shown that someone who sleeps only 5-6 hours for weeks is as powerful as having a blood alcohol level of 1.0 per mill. So it makes sense that at some point we will get tired. And sleep: how does it work and why can't we exist without it? Jessem Pocket Mill Pro loose tenon joinery system. Comparing it to the Festool Domino and the Tianli Handheld Mortiser. I've been on a quest lately to find an affordable substitution of the Festool Domino to recommend to my audience. Loose tenon joinery is one of the fastest and strongest methods for joining two boards together. Is the Jessem Pocket Mill Pro the tool we've been waiting for? I had high expectations for this jig as Jessem makes some of the best jigs and tools you can buy. Lunchables - coming soon to a school lunch near you. We all know Lunchables - but should this ultra-processed food be served to kids in school? The US federal government has approved Lunchables as nutritious enough to be served in schools across America, either purchased by students or given for free by school districts as part of the National School Lunch Program. With this deal, Kraft-Heinz's reformulated Lunchables are set to become a staple in cafeterias around the country. Is this okay? Is this really the best we can do for the kids? Who's getting the kick back on this? We'll look at how the food industry uses semantics and word-play, and investigate the new Lunchables that meet "whole grain rich criteria".
