De financiën van de gemeente zijn de komende jaren allesbehalve rooskleurig. Waar de inkomsten door de verhoging van de parkeer- en toeristenbelasting stijgen, blijft er door onder meer flink stijgende rentekosten geen geld over voor grote nieuwe investeringen in de stad. Dat blijkt uit de presentatie van de begroting voor volgend jaar waarin het nieuwe college voor het eerst het coalitieakkoord van Pro en D66 uitwerkt. De aangekondigde reorganisatie van de eigen organisatie gaat trager verlopen dan gedacht. Wel is er op het laatste moment nog geld gevonden om de overlast van drugsgebruik op straat en dakloosheid aan te pakken. Het stadsbestuur heeft - traditiegetrouw op de donderdag na Prinsjesdag - de begroting voor 2027 gepresenteerd in de culturele experience Amsterdam in Motion - en is de eerste concrete uitwerking van het coalitieakkoord 'Jouw stad is mijn stad, ons Amsterdam' van Pro en D66. De meeste plannen waren daarom al bekend, zoals gratis openbaar vervoer voor kinderen, verhoging van de toeristenbelastingen en de prijs van parkeervergunningen en een grote gemeentelijke reorganisatie. Nauwelijks ruimte voor investeringen Het is ook de eerste begroting onder leiding van de nieuwe wethouder van Financiën, Hendrik Jan Biemond. Wat al uit de coalitieplannen naar voren kwam, wordt nu in de begroting bevestigd: na jaren waarin het vorige college telkens de portemonnee trok voor nieuwe grote investeringen in de stad - denk aan de Oostbrug, nieuwbouw theater Meervaart, OBA Next etc. - is er de komende periode eigenlijk geen ruimte voor zulke projecten. Sterker nog: het is nog maar zeer de vraag of al deze projecten met de stijgende kosten van onder meer infrastructurele projecten door kunnen gaan. Waar de investeringen in de stad oplopen tot 1,5 miljard euro in 2030, moet het vanaf 2034 terugvallen naar 630 miljoen euro. Omdat een groot deel van dat bedrag - 450 miljoen euro - nodig is om alles wat er nu is in de stad te onderhouden, is de boodschap simpel: er is weinig ruimte voor nieuwe ambities. Ambtenaren zijn daarover in de begroting zeer concreet en denken daarbij bijvoorbeeld de verduurzaming van de stad, (het afvangen van CO₂ en warmtenetten) en de zogeheten 'schaalspronginvesteringen' (denk bijvoorbeeld aan het doortrekken van de Ringlijn richting Centraal Station).' Het is nog maar zeer de vraag of daar de komende jaren geld voor is. Oostbrug Eén van de concrete projecten waar de komende jaren sowieso extra geld voor moet worden gevonden is de Oostbrug. Die kosten stijgen mogelijk van 325 miljoen euro naar misschien wel 850 miljoen euro. Amsterdam heeft de komende jaren 100 miljoen euro extra gereserveerd. Daarmee is nog niet al het geld binnen: de stad hoopt nog steeds dat Den Haag en de Vervoerregio ook nog een (extra) bijdrage willen doen. De vraag is of ze dat ook willen, en zo niet wie dan het geld moet ophoesten. Minder ambtenaren Het college kiest door de financiële krapte noodgedwongen voor een koers die zich laat samenvatten met de woorden 'de basis op orde'. Er gaat onder andere er flink gesneden worden in het eigen ambtenarenapparaat: er moeten uiteindelijk 2500 voltijdbanen verdwijnen. Het eerste deel had er voor 1 januari al uit moeten zijn, maar het college gaat deze datum niet halen. Uiteindelijk moet de ambtelijke reorganisatie leiden tot een bezuiniging van 250 miljoen euro in 2030. Volgens het coalitieakkoord moest er op 1 januari volgend jaar een besparing van 625 fte gerealiseerd zijn, maar een zorgvuldige voorbereiding maakt dit tijdpad onhaalbaar, zegt de wethouder van financiën nu. Een vrouw die zichzelf met een hamer bevrijdt uit een blok marmer. Sinds zaterdag staat het kunstwerk '(Zoals) ze is' in de Kolenkitbuurt. Het beeld is gemaakt door vrouwen uit de buurt en moet laten zien dat niet een hoofddoek, religie of vrouw-zijn iemand beperken, maar de stereotypes die anderen opleggen. "Het is een kunstwerk dat verbeeld hoe een vrouw, een moslima, zichzelf aan het bevrijden is van alle stereotyperingen waar ze dagelijks mee te maken heeft", vertelt kunstenares Narges Mohammadi. Mohammadi werd gevraagd door het stadsdeel om een kunstwerk te maken voor de kunstroute Vrouwen van West. Samen met vier andere vrouwen uit de buurt werkte ze anderhalf jaar aan het kunstwerk. De andere makers, Nemire, Raziye, Shanaz en Yamina hebben verschillende achtergronden en leeftijden, maar delen hun islamitische achtergrond. Mohammadi zocht bewust vrouwen uit de buurt die nog niet eerder aan een kunstproject hadden meegedaan. Via flyers op straat en contacten met onder meer buurthuizen kwam ze uiteindelijk bij de vier vrouwen terecht. Samen bedachten ze het ontwerp, een vrouw die zich met gerichte hamerslagen losbreekt van het beeld dat anderen van haar hebben. "Ze wil gewoon lekker zichzelf zijn. Ze is een vrouw die lacht, naar de sportschool gaat en haar eigen leven leidt. In het nieuws en in de media wordt dat niet genoeg belicht." Het beeld maakt onderdeel uit van de kunstroute Vrouwen van West, die vrouwelijke kunstenaars en vrouwen in de openbare ruimte meer zichtbaarheid wil geven. Dat is volgens de makers hard nodig: van de ruim 1600 publieke kunstwerken in Amsterdam is ongeveer 15 procent gemaakt door een vrouw. "Er zijn zo weinig verhalen over vrouwen met een hoofddoek waarin ze als positief mens worden neergezet. Imported beef and pork were once labeled with their country of origin, but Congress voted in 2015 to end that requirement, so customers at the grocery store will have no way to identify this "mystery meat," which is coming mostly from Brazil. President Trump's proclamation in August came just a day after he met in the White House with Joesley Batista, whose family controls the Brazilian company JBS, the largest beef producer in the world. JBS is notorious for food safety violations and admitted in 2017 to bribing thousands of Brazilian officials for favorable treatment. "It smells like a pretty corrupt deal," says investigative journalist Eric Schlosser. He says Trump's move is "basically screwing over American ranchers," and the imported beef is "some of the meat most likely to be contaminated." Schlosser is author of the landmark book "Fast Food Nation," first published in 2001. He says that in the 25 years since then, the United States has developed "two food systems." While affluent and well-educated people increasingly favor sustainable, organic foods and care deeply about how food is grown and consumed, working people and the poor are relegated to the "fast-food industrial system" of cheap, mass-produced food of dubious safety. I’m in a zero gravity plane. It looks like I’m floating but I’m actually freefalling - this plane is hurtling towards the ground in a 42 degree nosedive! The whole flight is split up into 3 phases: First the plane pitches up to 50 degrees, speeding up steeply for 20 seconds along this path. During this part you feel squished to the floor… “hypergravity”. Until finally, when you reach the right spot, the plane dramatically slows down and basically throws you along the perfect path… And as you’re falling along this arc, the plane is carefully keeping itself perfectly around you. Nieuwe plaatsnaamborden met de naam 'Oud Osdorp' zorgen voor verwarring bij bewoners van Geuzenveld. Op drie plekken zijn onlangs borden geplaatst, maar nog niet iedereen begrijpt waarom. "Oud Osdorp? Ik woon al 70 jaar in Geuzenveld", zegt een bewoner. Ook de nieuwe grens die met de borden lijkt te worden aangegeven, roept vragen op. "Opeens is er een lijn dwars door onze buurt getrokken. Dat vind ik vreemd", aldus een andere bewoner. ''Ik ben van mening dat Geuzenveld hier niet ophoudt." De ommezijde van de borden zorgt tevens voor verwarring. Hierop staat 'Amsterdam', wat impliceert dat Oud Osdorp wordt verlaten en dus buiten de stad ligt. ''Je bent allang in Amsterdam. Om dan nog een nieuw bordje tegen te komen met 'Amsterdam' vind ik een beetje overbodig'', zegt een bewoner. De naam Oud Osdorp komt niet uit de lucht vallen. Het verwijst naar het oorspronkelijke Osdorp, dat al eeuwen bestond voordat de Westelijke Tuinsteden werden gebouwd. Het gebied lag rond de Osdorperweg, aan de rand van het huidige Geuzenveld. Eeuwenlang was Osdorp een klein, landelijk dorp met vooral boerderijen en weilanden. In 1921 werd het gebied officieel onderdeel van Amsterdam. In de twintigste eeuw breidde Amsterdam uit en ontstonden er nieuwe woonwijken rondom het dorp. Om onderscheid te maken tussen het historische dorp en de nieuwbouwwijk Osdorp, zoals wij die vandaag de dag kennen, wordt de naam Oud Osdorp gebruikt. Oud Osdorp is tegenwoordig geen officiële buurtnaam meer binnen de gemeentelijke indeling. De nieuwe borden staan nu tussen de wijk Geuzenveld en De Eendracht, waardoor er dus discussie is ontstaan. De borden zijn door de gemeente geplaatst op verzoek van dorpsraad Sloten-Oud Osdorp. De dorpsraad lijkt erg blij te zijn met de geplaatste borden, maar wilde verder helaas geen reactie geven. De gemeente gaf wel een reactie:“Het college heeft in de beantwoording van de schriftelijke vragen de cultuurhistorische waarden van het landelijke gebied erkend en stond positief tegenover het idee om plaatsnaamborden met Oud Osdorp in het gebied te plaatsen. We nemen de zorgen van bewoners over mogelijke verwarring serieus en evalueren de plaatsing ervan.'' De plaatsnaamborden krijgen nog een officiële onthulling. This video traces the surprisingly complicated history of beige, gray, and black homes—from San Francisco’s Victorian Painted Ladies to lead paint, tuberculosis, aluminum siding, vinyl siding, HOAs, and the economics of home resale. Using one 1890s Victorian house as a timeline, we peel back more than a century of exterior paint to see how changing technology, health fears, manufacturing, maintenance costs, and property values shaped the colors of American homes. Early homeowners used paint to make wood look like expensive stone. Then germ theory and tuberculosis helped turn white into a symbol of cleanliness—at exactly the moment toxic white lead became one of the most important ingredients in house paint. Later came cheap battleship gray, San Francisco’s 1960s Colorist Movement, the rise of the Painted Ladies, aluminum siding, vinyl siding, and the promise that homeowners might never need to paint again. Today, virtually the entire color spectrum is available. So why do so many new American houses still end up gray, beige, white, or black? The answer has less to do with simple aesthetic taste than you might expect.
