In die auto zijn explosieve materialen aangetroffen, waardoor alle woningen binnen een straal van honderd meter zijn ontruimd. De inzittenden van de auto zijn gevlucht, daar is de politie nu naar op zoek. Het is onduidelijk hoeveel mensen in de auto zaten. Een arrestatieteam van de politie is meerdere woningen in de omgeving van het incident binnengevallen, daarbij werden geen verdachten aangetroffen. De Explosieven Opruimingsdienst is op dit moment bezig met het onderzoeken van de auto: Er zijn gemaskerde agenten van de Dienst Speciale Interventies (DSI) en mensen van defensie aanwezig in Nieuw-West. Ook cirkelde een politiehelikopter boven de wijk en is de straat afgezet. Mensen die door het incident hun woning hebben moeten verlaten, worden opgevangen in buurthuis De Wachter. Onder de ontruimde panden zit ook een verzorgingstehuis voor hulpbehoevenden. Medewerkers van het Rode Kruis aanwezig om de opgevangen bewoners te ondersteunen. Bewoners die vanwege de ontruiming op deze locatie verblijven, worden daar voorzien van eten en drinken. Plofkraak in Duitsland De aanleiding voor de achtervolging is een plofkraak in Duitsland, die afgelopen nacht plaatsvond. Daarbij werd in de stad Fürth, in de Duitse deelstaat Hessen, een BMW M1 gezien. Deze auto werd vanmorgen gespot in Nederland, waarna hij dus, na een achtervolging, crashte in Nieuw-West. Volgens de Duitse politie werd er niets buitgemaakt bij de plofkraak. Wel raakte het gebouw waarin de geldautomaat zat, flink beschadigd. Er brak brand uit, maar alle bewoners konden hun woningen ongedeerd verlaten. De actie begon rond 13.00 uur. Om 14.15 uur schaalden de hulpdiensten op naar GRIP 1. Trump maakte Vance hoofdonderhandelaar met Iran, terwijl de vicepresident zelf sceptisch is over Amerikaanse betrokkenheid bij buitenlandse oorlogen. Vance bereikte een overeenkomst met Teheran, maar die deal lijkt inmiddels op sterven na dood. Amerikaanse bombardementen gaan door en een staakt-het-vuren blijft uit. Juist daarom is zijn rol zo riskant. Vance moet proberen een oorlog te beëindigen waar hij vanaf het begin kritisch over was, terwijl de regering-Trump tegelijkertijd doorgaat met bombardementen op doelen in Iran. Daarmee wordt zijn diplomatieke ruimte steeds kleiner. Volgens Vance probeert bovendien een buitenlandse invloedcampagne zijn overeenkomst met Iran te ondermijnen. Toch blijft hij zijn diplomatieke koers verdedigen, ook nu concrete resultaten uitblijven en een staakt-het-vuren niet dichterbij lijkt te komen. Die ontwikkeling speelt Marco Rubio in de kaart. De minister van Buitenlandse Zaken wordt eveneens genoemd als mogelijke Republikeinse presidentskandidaat voor 2028. Anders dan Vance kiest Rubio voor een harde lijn tegenover Teheran. Hij noemt de Iraanse machthebbers religieuze fanatici en stelt al jaren dat onderhandelen met het regime weinig zin heeft. Elke mislukte onderhandelingspoging van Vance versterkt daardoor Rubio’s boodschap. De oorlog speelt zich niet alleen af in Iran, maar ook binnen de Republikeinse Partij, waar de mogelijke opvolgers van Trump zich positioneren voor de toekomst. De Amsterdamse brandweerman Michael Snijder reanimeerde honderden mensen tijdens zijn werk. Nu zit hij thuis met PTSS. Bij elke reanimatie schrik je, vertelt Michael. “Je breekt mensen hun ribben, dat is niet fijn om te voelen.” De brandweer doet veruit de meeste reanimaties van alle hulpdiensten, door hun korte aanrijtijd en sterke fysiek voor het lichamelijk zware werk. Ze nemen vaak zelfs de reanimaties over van ambulancepersoneel. Bij Michael overleed zo’n 80 procent van de mensen die hij reanimeerde. “Ik heb zoveel shit gezien.” In 2024 deed Zembla onderzoek naar PTSS onder brandweermensen. Bij Defensie en de politie is het een erkende beroepsziekte; bij de brandweer niet. Bewoners en toeristen op de Prinsengracht werden gisterochtend al vroeg gewekt door het doordringende geluid van getimmer en geboor. De grote tribune voor de Canal Parade, die komende zaterdag plaatsvindt tijdens WorldPride, werd vanaf dat moment opgebouwd. En dat was een flinke klus. De tribune krijgt plek voor zo'n 10.000 bezoekers. Dat zorgt voor bouwverkeer en geluiden, maar de meeste buurtbewoners halen daar hun schouders over op. "Het geeft wel wat geluidsoverlast, maar ja, dat hoort erbij", zegt een bewoner. Want in de buurt zien ze ook de positieve kanten. “Misschien heb ik er wel een voordeel bij. Nu is er een vergunning afgegeven, en moet het ook netjes opgeruimd achterblijven", zegt een buurvrouw. Als dat niet zo is, kan ik daarna niet wandelen met mijn hond door het glas dat er ligt. Nu verwacht ik dat het schoon opgeleverd wordt.” Toch was het niet voor iedereen een feestje. Voor toeristen die juist voor een rustig weekend naar Amsterdam waren gekomen, viel de vroege start minder goed. "We kwamen voor een romantisch weekend, maar om 07.00 uur begonnen ze al met hameren", vertelt een hotelgast. Een andere toerist werd rond 07.30 uur gewekt door het geluid van de bouw. "Als we dit hadden geweten, hadden we misschien een hotel in een ander deel van de stad geboekt." Dit weekend kun je dan wel zitten met een mooi uitzicht. Niet gratis trouwens. Wie een plek op de tribune wil bemachtigen, betaalt tussen de 15 en 65 euro voor een zitplaats. Voor een luxere plaats met drank, eten en een gereserveerde stoel liggen de prijzen tussen de 200 en 275 euro. Omwonenden krijgen wél gratis toegang tot de tribune of een plek aan de overkant van de gracht. Al is dat niet voor iedereen nodig. "Ik woon drie hoog, dus ik kijk gewoon over de tribune heen", zegt een buurtbewoner. Een ander woont zelfs op de vijfde verdieping. The Basque Country contains a remarkable range of environments, from the wet Atlantic coast and the txakoli vineyards of Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia to the more continental conditions of Álava and Rioja Alavesa. I begin by locating the Basque Country and explaining the significance of the names País Vasco and Euskadi. I then divide the region into three principal geographical zones: the Atlantic Basin, the Montes Vascos and the Ebro River Basin. Along the Atlantic coast, short rivers flow northwards through Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia into the Bay of Biscay. This cool, wet and maritime landscape is closely associated with the production of txakoli. Further inland, the Montes Vascos form part of the Cordillera Cantábrica and separate the Atlantic coast from the Álava Plain and the Ebro Valley. The southern part of the Basque Country includes Rioja Alavesa, where the climate and geology are markedly different. Here, the influence of the Ebro Valley, limestone-rich soils and more continental conditions creates an important environment for viticulture. I also examine the principal soil types found across the Basque Country, including sandy topsoils, alluvial clay, sandstone, clay loam, limestone and gravelly deposits. Finally, I consider how rainfall, fertile soils and organic matter can influence vineyard productivity and the traditionally light, fresh character of many Basque wines.
