In this interview, acclaimed historian Sheila Fitzpatrick joins The Burning Archive to discuss her book The Death of Stalin and the wider arc of Soviet and post-Soviet Russian history. We cover Stalin's death and Eisenhower's scepticism toward Soviet peace overtures, the "moral panic" quality of 1950s American perceptions of the USSR, and the chronic weakness of Western intelligence on the Kremlin compared to Soviet espionage in the West. Fitzpatrick reflects on the Khrushchev Thaw and its atmosphere of possibility, the lingering spectre of Stalin in post-Stalin politics, and how the totalitarian model still shapes Western imagination decades on. You’ve probably seen “forever chemicals” make headlines in the past few years. This class of compounds known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have long been used to make nonstick cookware and high-performance raingear. And they’re being phased out in certain product categories because of their health risks. This episode, Wirecutter sustainability editor Katie Okamoto explains the potential health risks of everyday exposure to these slippery synthetic compounds. And she breaks down the new wave of PFAS-free cookware, cosmetics, and outdoor gear, revealing which replacements are actually worth buying—and why your most sustainable bet is often to just keep using the gear you already own.  This episode covers: • What PFAS actually are: Developed in the 1940s, these compounds are used to make things slick and waterproof. They’ve been used in nonstick cookware, raingear, and even dental floss. • The real health and environmental risks: Because they don't break down and spread easily through the environment, PFAS have contaminated drinking water and soils, and bioaccumulate up the food chain. These chemicals have been linked to a range of health issues, including liver damage, immune system impacts, and certain cancers. But experts say that exposure from using a single frying pan is low. • The truth about ceramic cookware: After extensive testing, Wirecutter’s kitchen team doesn’t recommend ceramic pans, which are often marketed as an alternative to Teflon. The ceramic loses its non-stick properties far too quickly to justify the price. Instead, they recommend investing in cast iron, stainless steel, or carbon steel. • PFAS in makeup and outdoor gear: The beauty industry is phasing  PFAS out of cosmetics, and makeup is not a primary source of PFAS exposure,. For outdoor gear, brands are switching to new PFAS-free coatings, and some are reviving Ventile, a densely woven, highly water-resistant cotton fabric. • Don't toss your old gear: The most sustainable choice you can make is to keep using your older, well-made products—like a rain jacket—until they actually need to be replaced. Op het plein werd ook een plastic tas met een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid cocaïne aangetroffen.  ''Ik rook twee maanden geleden al een hele sterke lijmgeur. Toen ik dat gister weer rook, wilde ik de politie alarmeren, maar ik zag dat ze al ter plaatse waren', vertelt een buurtbewoner.  Bewoners zijn geschrokken, maar zeggen dat het incident niet helemaal uit de lucht komt valen. ''Ik zag veel dure auto's die niet thuishoren een buurt waar vooral mensen met lage inkomens wonen'', vertelt een andere bewoner. De buurt lijkt al langere tijd last te hebben van drugsgerelateerde problematiek. De meeste bewoners willen voor hun eigen veiligheid dan ook niet herkenbaar op beeld. De politie is nog op zoek naar de twee op de vlucht geslagen mannen. En natuurlijk over de bloedhitte: want klagen kunnen wij Amsterdammers als geen ander. Kijk nu naar De Zwoele Stad! Vierenveertig jaar deed documentairemaker Roy Dames over zijn laatste film 'Het Hart van Amsterdam'. De docu gaat over de grootste spelers in criminele netwerken van de binnenstad en lijkt wel een tijdscapsule. Net als Roys verhalen zelf, trouwens: als hij vertelt over de drugsbazen het verleden, is het net alsof je erbij was. Maar hij moet natuurlijk oppassen met wat hij zegt. En of in Café Nol toch ook weleens een boef aan de bar komt? Eigenaar Elisabeth Grijzenhout kan dat niet bevestigen noch ontkennen, maar het is duidelijk dat iedereen bij haar welkom is. Haar café, de huiskamer van de Jordaan, is al zestig jaar een begrip. Sinds ze een populaire podcast is gestart en veel aanwezig is op sociale media, loopt het storm in de bruine kroeg aan de Westerstraat. Maar de jeugd van tegenwoordig mag zich wel een beetje gedragen, vindt Elisabeth. Begin jaren tachtig filmen Arnold-Jan Scheer en Roy Dames hun eerste beelden voor hun film over de opkomst en de ondergang van de penoze in het Wallengebied. Veertig jaar later gaat de film - met hoofdrolspelers als Frits van de Wereld en Zwarte Joop - vanavond dan eindelijk in première. "De penoze van toen zouden zich omdraaien in hun graf als ze zien hoe de Zeedijk er nu uitziet." We wandelen met filmmakers Arnold-Jan Scheer en Roy Dames over de Zeedijk. Om de paar meter stoppen de mannen om een herinnering op te halen. Bij het oude koffiehuis van Frits van de Wereld blijven we wat langer staan. Dames laat zien dat de ramen van het woonhuis nog steeds van kogelwerend glas zijn. "Frits was een van de grootste penoze uit de buurt. Hij was de eerste die hasj naar Nederland halen. Maar het was ook een onwijs aardige kerel", vertelt hij. Dat de penoze in die tijd ook best aardige kerels waren, blijven de mannen herhalen. "Ze waren echt niet alleen maar crimineel, ze zorgden hier voor elkaar. Ook toen wij hier filmden en ook wel eens beroofd werden, had ik het idee dat we beschermd werden door Frits van de Wereld. Ook gaf hij verslaafden, zoals Petertje Zwart, wel eens een tientje. Dan hadden ze ten minste een fijn half uurtje, zei hij dan." De heren vertellen hoe ze het Wallengebied de afgelopen veertig jaar hebben zien veranderen. Van een ruige straat, vol junks en dichtgetimmerde panden, tot de rustige straat die het nu is. "Ik denk dat de oude penoze zich nu zouden omdraaien in hun graf", lacht Dames. "Het ziet er natuurlijk hartstikke mooi en fraai uit, maar het was zo'n andere tijd. Alles kon en alles mocht. Tranen vandaag bij Milkshake-directeur Marieke Samallo: na vijftien jaar neemt ze dit weekend afscheid. Samallo zegt dat ze het terrein nu wel heeft uitgespeeld en het tijd is voor een frisse wind. Ze richtte het festival vijftien jaar geleden op, omdat ze een plek miste waar iedereen zich thuis voelde. "Ik kon niet met al mijn vrienden uitgaan. Ik mis altijd kleur, en dat hebben we hier gedaan." Milkshake vindt jaarlijks plaats in het Westerpark, met het openingsweekend van de Pride. Het inclusieve dancefestival trekt tegenwoordig ruim 36.000 bezoekers verdeeld over twee dagen. Volgens Samallo is een festival als Milkshake juist belangrijk om 'wat kleur' te brengen in de wereld. "Ik vond alle festivals saai en niet inclusief." Op het festival zijn vaak extravagant of juist schaars geklede bezoekers, drag queens en veel mensen uit de lhbti+-gemeenschap te vinden. Voorafgaand vindt ook Mini Milkshake plaats, waar plek is voor mensen met een verstandelijke beperking. Samallo zegt dat de vele kritiek op het festival in 2025 niet de reden is dat ze dit jaar stopt. "Al was het niet gezellig." Vorig jaar was er verontwaardiging over de keuze van zangeres Azealia Banks als hoofdartiest, wegens homofobe uitspraken die zij in het verleden had gedaan. Banks werd alsnog afgezegd. Ook trokken vorig jaar dertig artiesten zich terug omdat investeringsmaatschappij KKR de nieuwe eigenaar van Milkshake was geworden. Die organisatie werd gelinkt aan bedrijven die actief zijn in door Israël bezet Palestijns gebied. "Je leert ineens welke mensen loyaal zijn", kijkt Samallo daarop terug. "Welke mensen nog wel het dialoog aangaan." AT5 ging gisteren op de eerste dag van het festival bij Samallo langs, voor de aanslag op de Pride in Berlijn. Op het festival is vanmiddag een minuut stilte gehouden voor de slachtoffers van die gebeurtenis. Het festival zegt juist te zullen dansen om 'de vreugde die het slachtoffer op de wereld bracht te herdenken'.
