Bij het aanschaffen van een diamant wordt al snel gedacht aan steden zoals Antwerpen, maar het slijpen van diamanten is al eeuwenlang een echte Amsterdamse ambacht. De diamantindustrie werd hier onder andere zo groot doordat in de 17e eeuw Joodse Amsterdammers waren uitgesloten voor gilden (beroepsorganisaties). Echter bestond er voor het slijpen van diamanten geen gilde, waardoor veel Joodse Amsterdammers in deze sector terecht kwamen. Een bedrijf dat deze ambacht nog altijd uitoefent is GASSAN Diamonds. Met winkels aan o.a. de Dam, de P.C. Hooftstraat en op Schiphol, heeft dit bedrijf een internationale allure, maar dit is toch écht een Amsterdams familiebedrijf. En dat voel je direct wanneer je binnenstapt op het hoofdkantoor op de Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat. GASSAN Diamonds werd in 1945 opgericht door Samuel Gassan, die voor de oorlog een opleiding in het Boas gebouw had gevolgd tot diamantslijper. Na de oorlog begon hij in de Diamantbeurs op het Weesperplein voor zichzelf. Zijn bedrijf groeide snel waardoor het in 1950 verhuisde naar de Zwanenburgerstraat (waar nu de Stopera staat) en vijf jaar later naar de Nieuwe Achtergracht. Na het overlijden van Samuel Gassan in 1982, namen kleinzoons Benno en Guy Leeser het stokje over. Onder leiding van Benno en Guy bleef het bedrijf groeien, waardoor er in 1990 weer een nieuw pand nodig was. Ze verhuisden naar het Boas gebouw op die Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat, zonder op dat moment te weten dat hun grootvader zijn carrière hier ooit was begonnen. De cirkel was rond. Inmiddels zijn ook Benno’s dochter Debora Leeser en haar halfbroer David Bijlsma jaren werkzaam binnen GASSAN. En daar houdt het niet op, ook Benno’s kleinkinderen zijn werkzaam in het bedrijf, zo staat onder andere één van zijn kleinzoons in de winkel op het hoofdkantoor.  Het pand waar GASSAN nu is gevestigd, het voormalige Boas gebouw, werd in de 19e speciaal ontworpen als diamantslijperij. Omdat voor het slijpen van diamanten licht een hele belangrijke rol speelt, is het gebouw vrij ondiep. In die tijd was er namelijk nog geen kunstlicht en moest men het hebben van het licht dat van buiten kwam. Door het smalle, lange, ontwerp is er overal in het pand veel daglicht, waardoor er goed geslepen kon worden. Daarnaast werden de slijpmolens vroeger aangedreven door middel van stoom, vandaar dat er op het terrein ook nog een gebouw met schoorsteen staat. Hier stond vroeger de stoommachine. Inmiddels wordt er gebruik gemaakt van elektra en kunstlicht, maar naast dat is er door de jaren heen niet zo veel aan de ambacht veranderd. Nog altijd worden de diamanten met uiterste precisie en vakwerk geslepen en bewerkt. En wat niet zo veel mensen weten: je kan dit gewoon gratis met eigen ogen aanschouwen. Er worden namelijk dagelijks rondleidingen gegeven door het pand, waarbij je meer over de geschiedenis te weten komt en ziet hoe de slijpers te werk gaan. Klik hier voor meer informatie over de tour. En wat je daar als bezoeker misschien minder snel ziet, maar wél in de minidocumentaire die wij maakten, is dat sport een grote rol speelt binnen het familiebedrijf. De hal naar het kantoor van Benno en het trappenhuis hangen vol met voetbalshirts, foto’s en andere mooie sportherinneringen. En deze liefde voor sport is niet zomaar een ‘hobby’. Hier wordt tijd voor vrijgemaakt én het leveren van ‘teamwerk’ is ook echt iets wat een belangrijke rol speelt binnen het bedrijf. Wij zijn Fanclub Centrum, een FanClub voor onze oude binnenstad.
