Thomas Massie beschuldigt Hegseth van machtsmisbruik rond de oorlog met Iran en zegt dat Amerikaanse troepen zonder toestemming van het Congres ingezet blijven. Ook binnen de Republikeinse partij klinkt kritiek op Hegseth. Senator Rand Paul noemde zijn plannen voor hogere militaire uitgaven onlangs ‘volstrekt onverantwoordelijk’. Toch lijkt een afzetting voorlopig weinig kans te maken, omdat Hegseth nog veel steun heeft binnen zijn partij.

Na de verwoestende explosie in een kelderbox in Osdorp werd in het puin een wapenarsenaal, materiaal voor plofkraken en de voet van Yassine B. gevonden. Dat zegt het Openbaar Ministerie vandaag tijdens een eerste zitting in de strafzaak. De man wordt net als Nawfal T. verdacht van het teweegbrengen van de explosie en het voorbereiden van plofkraken. Het zou allemaal volgens justitie gebeurd zijn in de criminele 'Box 171'. Beide mannen waren volgens het Openbaar Ministerie aanwezig in de kelderbox waar drie maanden geleden een zware explosie in plaatsvond. De klap in het gebouw - waar ook een sportschool gevestigd zat - veroorzaakte enorme schade, honderden omwonenden moesten tijdelijk hun woningen verlaten. Zeven personen raakten gewond, van wie enkelen zwaar letsel opliepen. 'Criminele kelderbox 171' Het Openbaar Ministerie liet eerder al weten dat in de kelderboxen voorbereidingen werden getroffen voor het maken van explosieven, vermoedelijk bedoeld voor plofkraken, en herhaalde dat vandaag. "In het puin ter hoogte van de box zijn plofkraak gerelateerde goederen gevonden. Naast een enorme hoeveelheid flitspoeder zijn ziplockzakken en rollen ducttape gevonden. Ook vond de politie verschillende wapens waaronder een mitrailleur." Op de spullen is dna aangetroffen, vooral van Yassine B. Beide verdachten zijn volgens het Openbaar Ministerie te linken aan verschillende plofkraken. Yassine B. match met een spoor op een stuk ducttape dat op 22 mei in Duitsland is veiliggesteld na een plofkraak. 'Bedreigingen aan politielint' Voor het Openbaar Ministerie was het al snel duidelijk dat Yassine B. en Nawfal T. die avond samen in de box waren. Ze zijn samen op camerabeelden van de parkeergarage gezien en kort na de explosie vraagt T. al om 'Gekko', de bijnaam van Yassine B. De twee mannen werden na de explosie onder het puin vandaan gehaald door andere slachtoffers en de hulpdiensten. "Schokkend om te lezen is dat een van de slachtoffers vertelt dat hij nadat hij één van de verdachten tussen de brokstukken vandaan had gehaald, bedreigend op de huid werd gezeten door jongens uit de buurt. Kenmerkend voor het criminele systeem rond 'Box 171'. Kennelijk weet een grote groep bij het politielint wat er aan de hand was. Eén opdracht, niet praten met de politie", zo vertelt de officier van justitie vandaag. Daar komt nog bij dat een andere getuige aan het lint geen verklaring af durft te leggen. Om half drie komt die nacht een jongen naar het afzetlint met een capuchon over zijn hoofd. Hij weet wat er is gebeurd, maar vindt het te gevaarlijk om dat te vertellen. "Als ik ga praten gaan ze mij straks pakken, maar iedereen weet wat ze daar deden. Wat ik steeds hoorde, is dat ze daar explosieven voor plofkraken in elkaar zetten. Dat is waarschijnlijk misgegaan. Jullie zullen de kruitsporen wel vinden", zo verklaarde de jongen. Verdachte mist twee benen De verdachten zelf verlieten de plaats delict met zwaar lichamelijk letsel. Yassine B. lag enige tijd in coma, mist twee benen en mist delen van zijn hand. Sinds vorige week ligt hij in een revalidatiecentrum en wordt 24/7 bewaakt. Justitie is bang dat hij weer in contact komt met het criminele netwerk waarin hij zich begaf. Nawfal T. heeft inmiddels het ziekenhuis verlaten en zit in voorlopige hechtenis in Zaanstad. Advocaten Chris Tuip en Veerle Hammerstein vroegen vandaag de voorlopige hechtenis van hun cliënten op te heffen. Met name omdat de kans op herhaling klein is en Yassine B. meer bezoek zou willen ontvangen in het revalidatiecentrum. Volgens de advocaten zal niet bewezen kunnen worden dat de verdachten met opzet de explosie veroorzaakten. De rechtbank gaat niet mee in de verzoeken en alles in stand in afwachting tot de volgende zitting. Het Openbaar Ministerie liet vandaag aan het einde van de zitting nog weten dat onderzocht wordt of een reconstructie gemaakt kan worden van de kelderbox. Amnesty International has released a new report concluding that the repressive measures used by Iranian authorities to crush the Woman, Life, Freedom protests in 2022 constitute crimes against humanity. Investigating the killings of 377 protesters and bystanders in 2022, Amnesty International's report calls for international criminal investigations into 87 Iranian officials. “Crimes against humanity are system crimes. This means that they require resources, organization, structures, and state policy,” says Raha Bahreini, a human rights lawyer and researcher on Iran for Amnesty International, which also recently condemned the U.S-Israeli war on Iran. “We've been very clear that the suffering of victims of crimes against humanity must not be instrumentalized or weaponized by actors such as [the] U.S. and Israel,” she adds. ProPublica reports that Umar Kremlev paid hundreds of thousands of dollars on wedding expenses, including the rental of a private island. Just weeks before the wedding, Putin awarded Kremlev the Order of Friendship. Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Anderson, confirmed ProPublica’s findings in a social media post, specifying that Kremlev only paid for an afterparty. “The most important thing to understand about Kremlev is the level of his connection with the Russian government. De brug Overtoomsesluis over de Kostverlorenvaart in West gaat vanaf vandaag voor zeven maanden dicht vanwege werkzaamheden. Tot en met 1 mei volgend jaar kunnen er geen auto's en trams meer over de brug rijden. Tijdens de werkzaamheden kunnen fietsers en voetgangers meestal wel gebruik blijven maken van de brug. De brug is in slechte staat en kan al sinds 2025 niet meer open. In het najaar van dat jaar werd er een noodconstructie geplaatst, die vandaag verwijderd wordt. Daardoor kan de brug wel weer even open. Dat is nodig omdat er een groot brugdeel doorheen moet, dat bestemd is voor de werkzaamheden voor de verbreding van de A10 in Zuid. Zodra dat brugdeel er doorheen is, zal begonnen worden aan de werkzaamheden van de Overtoomsesluis. Verkeershinder De Overtoomsesluis is een veelgebruikte verkeersroute voor mensen die vanuit West richting het centrum reizen en andersom. Daardoor heeft de sluiting van de brug de nodige gevolgen voor mensen die er gebruik van maken. Het grootste deel van de werkzaamheden kunnen fietsers en voetgangers nog wel over de brug. Van 28 september tot en met 28 februari wordt telkens één kant van de brug afgesloten voor fietsers. Fietsers in de tegenovergestelde rijrichting worden dan omgeleid. Voetgangers kunnen de brug wel blijven gebruiken. Ook 's nachts worden er soms werkzaamheden uitgevoerd. Het kan voorkomen dat de brug dan ook afgesloten is voor zowel fietsers als voetgangers, en dat omwonenden overlast ervaren van geluid en licht. Automobilisten worden omgeleid via de Zeilbrug en de Kinkerbrug. De extra reistijd kan daardoor oplopen tot vijftien minuten. Tijdens de werkzaamheden zal tramlijn 1 niet stoppen op de Jan Pieter Hijestraat Overtoom. De dichtstbijzijnde tramhalte van lijn 1 is dan de Constantijn Huygensstraat, op ongeveer tien minuten loopafstand.
