In ’t centrum heb je veel adresjes waar je kan overnachten, maar als je echt als een koning(in) wil wakker worden met de Dam als uitzicht, dan moet je bij de Krasnapolsky zijn. In de serie ‘Crème de la Crème’ besteden we aandacht aan de meest bijzondere en verfijnde plekken van het centrum, en Krasnapolsky is daar één van.. Van kleermaker tot ondernemer Krasnapolsky heeft zijn naar te danken aan de oprichter: Adolph Wilhelm Krasnapolsky. De Duits-Oekraïnse Krasnapolsky kwam op 22-jarige leeftijd naar Amsterdam, waar hij eerst op de Nieuwendijk als kleermaker werkte. Met een compagnon kocht hij op een gegeven moment een koffiehuis aan de Warmoesstraat, waar hij een restaurant van maakte. Dat liep goed en langzamerhand kocht Krasnapolsky er steeds panden bij. Zo ontstond beetje bij beetje hotel Krasnapolsky. Je ziet het dan misschien niet op het eerste oog, maar vandaar dat het hotel ook uit maar liefst 55 panden bestaat. Binnen is alles keurig aan elkaar gemaakt, maar waar je het wél nog een beetje aan ziet, zijn de hoogteverschillen in het pand, zoals assistent-hoofdconciërge Thomas ook vertelt in de video. Alhoewel Krasnapolsky al meer dan een eeuw er niet meer is, wordt hij uiteraard wel nog overal geëerd in het hotel. Zo hangt er niet alleen een grote foto van hem aan de muur, ook is de cocktailbar ’The Tailor’ een eerbetoon aan de oprichter. Het interieur verwijst op verschillende manieren naar zijn eerste beroep als kleermaker. Daarom al een bezoekje waard, maar nog specialer zijn de cocktails. Als Amsterdammer dus een goeie plek om even een drankje te doen midden in het centrum. In ’t weekend s het wel verstandig om even te reserveren. De wintertuin en The White Room De Wintertuin en het sterrenrestaurant The White Room zijn ook twee plekken die je als Amsterdammer écht een keer bezocht moet hebben. Ze ademen historie en zijn adembenemend. Een keer ontbijten op een bijzondere plek? Dan kan in de wintertuin. Een keer iets te vieren? Boek een speciaal diner in het prachtige restaurant The White Room. De sleutel tot succes Ondanks dat het pand natuurlijk iconisch is, zijn het ook de mensen met hart voor de zaak die het helemaal af maken. Zoals Jochem, die al zo’n 30 jaar in het hotel werkt en een aantal legendarische gebeurtenissen heeft meegemaakt. Alleen mag hij daar helaas niet te veel over vertellen… Maar we kunnen je verzekeren: deze ras-Amsterdammer omarmt je met open armen en heeft altijd wel een goed verhaal. Daarnaast is er ook Thomas. Als assistent-hoofdconciërge staat Thomas altijd klaar voor de gasten en geeft hij met liefde de beste tips over onze stad. Niet zo gek ook dat hij zichzelf lid mag noemen van de Gouden Sleutels, een genootschap waar alleen de állerbeste hotelconciërges lid van zijn. The impact of colonization in Europe in the 1950s through the 1970s is examined in Class 17. Timothy Snyder is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. He speaks five and reads ten European languages. Ukraine must have existed as a society and polity on 23 February 2022, else Ukrainians would not have collectively resisted Russian invasion the next day. What does it mean for a nation to exist? Is this a matter of structures, actions, or both? Why has the existence of Ukraine occasioned such controversy? In what ways are Polish, Russian, and Jewish self-understanding dependent upon experiences in Ukraine? Just how and when did a modern Ukrainian nation emerge? For that matter, how does any modern nation emerge? Why some and not others? Can nations be chosen, and can choices be decisive? If so, whose, and how? Ukraine was the country most touched by Soviet and Nazi terror: what can we learn about those systems, then, from Ukraine? Is the post-colonial, multilingual Ukrainian nation a holdover from the past, or does it hold some promise for the future?
