Why the 1940s was such a terrible time for Ukraine is the subject of Class 16. Timothy Snyder is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. He speaks five and reads ten European languages. Ukraine must have existed as a society and polity on 23 February 2022, else Ukrainians would not have collectively resisted Russian invasion the next day. What does it mean for a nation to exist? Is this a matter of structures, actions, or both? Why has the existence of Ukraine occasioned such controversy? In what ways are Polish, Russian, and Jewish self-understanding dependent upon experiences in Ukraine? Just how and when did a modern Ukrainian nation emerge? For that matter, how does any modern nation emerge? Why some and not others? Can nations be chosen, and can choices be decisive? If so, whose, and how? Ukraine was the country most touched by Soviet and Nazi terror: what can we learn about those systems, then, from Ukraine? Is the post-colonial, multilingual Ukrainian nation a holdover from the past, or does it hold some promise for the future? Whether you’re just beginning guitar, or have been playing for decades but want to rise to new levels in your playing, you’ll find highly detailed tutorials and lessons. At the root of beautiful playing is a solid technique (aka “the way your hands move”). You can find step-by-step methods, presented in very fine detail, showing exactly how to get great sound, and how to move your fingers. So as you progress, you can continue to improve. Bad technique puts a limit on your playing (speed, tone quality, control). Good technique gets stronger and more efficient with every practice. It forms the bedrock foundation for a lifetime of beautiful music. You’ll find loads of technique suggestions and tutorials at Classical Guitar Shed. And if you’re serious about learning great skills, you can join The Woodshed, and get arguably the finest classical guitar education online, with personal support and hundreds of practice-along videos. Read more on The Woodshed here: https://www.classicalguitarshed.com/learn-classical-guitar/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=Why_You_Should_Avoid_Muscle_Memory_on_Guitar&utm_content=CrGKfMYM6Yc You’ll find some of the deepest-diving explorations of classical guitar and Spanish guitar pieces anywhere online, with step-by-step instructions on how to play guitar beautifully so that the music sings and connects with listeners (and yourself) on an emotional level. Music is not entirely subjective. Some ways of doing things are more effective than others. If you learn these basic “rules”, you’ll automatically play with more grace, beauty, and feeling. At CGS, you’ll also discover archives of comprehensive articles about many of the issues, details, habits, and best practices surrounding playing guitar. You’ll find tips and tricks on how to be more effective at practicing. You’ll find articles on subjects as varied as getting great classical guitar tone, how to avoid pain and injury playing guitar, and the differences between practice and exercise. If you ever need a break from your practice and want to enrich your understanding of all that is classical guitar, browsing the Classical Guitar Shed archives is a great place to explore. From the unlawful prorogation of parliament, to Jonhson’s threats to break domestic and international law over the Northern Ireland protocol, the extent to which the constitution relies on convention and governmental integrity has been revealed. In turn, some politicians, scholars, and commentators have argued that a written constitution is a better guardian of fundamental rights and the separation of powers. On the other hand, critics of a written constitution point to the United States, which arguably faces rights retrenchment and an activist judiciary. Would a written British constitution be a stronger shield against tyranny, or would it merely empower unaccountable judges and stymie positive societal change? Ruyzdael proudly presents Writers on Wax: The Sound of Graffiti Volume 2. A compilation album with 8 exclusive tracks featuring 8 (in)famous graffiti writers: BLADE, DELTA & SJAM SJAMSJOEDIN, CREDIT00, DUDES, COCA82, CEMOS, CHAZE and KAPI ONE. The album is available in a regular edition with obi strip and as a special limited edition album cover with red marbled vinyl. Writers on Wax: The Sound of Graffiti is a series of vinyls that bring to life the development surrounding the phenomenon graffiti, with graffiti writers producing music under their alter egos. The fact that graffiti writers also produce music is a development that is underexposed in the still growing (commercial) interest in graffiti and street art. Writers on Wax offers these creators a platform: a tangible product for their musical talent, expression and experimentation. We give the music a right to exist. Not to help the makers with their 'careers' but to prevent it from remaining stagnant and unheard, and to show a new perspective on the development of graffiti. The project and also the creators are young at heart. Spontaneous. Disinterested. Graffiti is freedom. Pre-order now available at ruyzdael.com. What is the signifcance of Robin Hood as an outlaw -- a person declared legally dead -- who lives in the greenwood, where life is constantly renewed? Why does Shakespeare heavily allude to Robin in his Henry IV plays? And most significantly, was there a real Robin Hood, or is he a pure creation of myth and folklore? We consider the possibilities and scrutinize the evidence. Suggested further reading: Maurice Keen, "The Outlaws of Medieval Legend"; J. C. Holt, "Robin Hood"; A. J. Pollard, "Imagining Robin Hood." Usually we use objects in the British Museum to tell you about people from the past. But in this episode of Curator's Corner, Imran Javed is going autobiographical. By pairing objects from the British Museum with his own personal items, Imran has built a display that speaks not just to historic India and Pakistan, but also to his own, present day identity as a British-Punjabi. Imran's display, 'A Confluence of Stories', is open until November 14. In this video, I begin my WSET Diploma D3 series on Sardinia, exploring the island’s geography, history and modern wine industry. I look at Sardinia’s position in the Mediterranean, its distinctive landscape and the long history of viticulture on the island, from the Nuragic civilisation and Phoenician influence through Roman, Pisan, Genoese and Spanish rule. I also explore how this history has shaped modern Sardinian wine, including the Spanish influence behind grapes and styles such as Cannonau, Carignano and Vernaccia di Oristano, before looking at the development of Sardinia’s modern wine industry and its focus on quality and regional identity. This is Part 1 of my six-part Sardinia series for WSET Level 4 Diploma D3: Wines of the World. Sign up to Morning Brew for free today! https://morningbrewdaily.com/stewart What happened to McDonald's? Their restaurants used to be so iconic. It was impossible to mistake one, for say, a Wendy's. Distinguished architecture used to be an important part of a brand's identity. But today, fast food restaurant's all look the same. Bland grey boxes. The great convergence toward this standard has been called 'Chipotle-ification.' In this video, we trace the changing restaurant designs of McDonald's, from the iconic golden arch era to the soulless boxes of today. We break down the architecture and the forces at play in the great homogenization of fast food architecture. __Membership__ Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYAm24PkejQR2xMgJgn7xwg/join __About the Channel__ Architecture with Stewart is a YouTube journey exploring architecture’s deep and enduring stories in all their bewildering glory.
